Permit Exit Trail
Hi,
I have a permit from Tuolumne Meadows over Donoghue Pass which I originally planned to exit in Onion Valley. I won't be able to do the entire trip now, and am hoping to split it over a few trips. Is it possible on this permit to change the plan to do an out and back loop, e.g. Tuolumne Meadows to Ansel Adams and back to Yosemite Valley. Geraldine. |
Hi Geraldine,
?
I guess you do not yet have a permit, but a permit reservation. As long as it is only a reservation it should be editable, and you can change anything but entry date and entry trailhead. Thus: yes.
?
While you may also make it from Tuolumne to VVR and leave from there to Fresno?

Henning
?
BTW, I will most probably start from VVR sobo on June 4th

Thanks Henning. Great suggestion. I see there is a hiker shuttle from VVR to Fresno.

The hard and fast rules for wilderness permits are: 1) starting on the start date of the permit, 2) at the trailhead on the permit, 3) with only the indicated trip leader and number of people specified on the permit (plus the various rules about where you can and can't camp). The rest of the trip itinerary information rec dot com asks you to provide is safety info so they know where to look for you if someone reports you missing. I agree with Henning that if you can edit the itinerary before the permit is issued, that's probably best. However, technically you wouldn't be in violation of your permit if your route or itinerary changed after you start.?

开云体育The other key thing to do is to leave a note in your car dash to the itinerary adjustment; if you are parking your car at the trailhead. Otherwise, be sure friends and family know the adjustment. From my search days and teaching of Hug-A-Tree, I recommend
leaving a footprint at the car as well for trackers to use in case
one gets lost. Two Dogs On 5/19/2022 15:12, Lange Jorstad via

开云体育Nice site Robert. Though my many classes with Hug-A-Tree, a great
way to leave a bootprint is use aluminum foil. Place a sheet on
top of a few towels. Step carefully onto the aluminum foil. Roll
around with the soles to get a good imprint. Carefully step off.
There is now a nice set of prints. Mark with your name, if more
than one person. Place in vehicle. Two Dogs On 5/19/2022 16:21,

Here is a handy, easy to use form for creating an itinerary that you can leave in your vehicle and leave with others. |
开云体育Footprint is usually for the trackers. ?We use it to get a direction of travel-cuts the search area. ?Difficult to follow over long stretches. ?We use a scent article for the dogs - recently worn shirt or gloves for example ?On May 20, 2022, at 9:01 AM, Byron Nevins <byron.nevins@...> wrote:

开云体育OK, from a canine search and rescue perspective, which I was a
trailing handler for 25 years, I did not talk about scent
articles. Here is the scent article scoop. Only the subject should
create the scent article.
You can further note on the bag, "Collected per CARDA handler guideline." I am CARDA 169. This later will tell SAR teams the quality of the scent article. Worst thing to do is put the scent article in a paper bag, which is porous and will collect other scents in the area. Placement on vehicle floor is good. As for temperature, it should be acceptable. I have actually had my dog work with a scent article that was in my car for a year before being used. It was kept in a zip lock bag the entire time. Key is to avoid getting anyone else's scent on the scent article.
Even the exterior of the bag can hold scent. I have worked with
contaminated scent articles, but there are limitations and details
that must be followed to ensure the scent article can be used with
reliability. I can discuss more if people want. I am currently working on a
book on how to train trailing dogs. Scent article collection will
be contained within. Two Dogs On 5/20/2022 09:00, Byron Nevins wrote:

开云体育To add to that last email, The footprint is for the trackers.
Trailing dog teams should also be able to use footprints as well.
I use them to confirm my dog's work. I.e. if my dog is working in
an area that has some good track traps (open dirt areas), I look
at the ground to see if I can see any matching tracks or signs.
Also, the flankers are to keep an eye out as well for signs. SAR is a puzzle game where we constantly look for clues - How is
the trailing dog working? Is there an article/item that belongs to
the subject? etc. Two Dogs On 5/20/2022 09:00, Byron Nevins wrote:

开云体育So since we are searching for the subject s/he is not available to give us the scent article. ?We usually send the handler (often ?a CARDA person) into the house with the family to get the best piece - scent article. ?Then as you say.On May 20, 2022, at 4:48 PM, Derek Koonce <derek@...> wrote:
