Hitchhiking in the COVID era #Transportation

I've always found it very easy to hitchhike on the east side of the Sierra Nevada in the past, but I wonder whether it has become more difficult in the COVID era in terms of people being reluctant to stop for hikers. I normally wouldn't give any thought to how I'm going to get down to 395 from my exit point (Onion Valley) because this type of hitch has always been almost immediate in my experience, but has this changed? ?I'm going to carry a mask on my trip so I'll have one when I hitchhike. ?Is it easier to get a ride if you wear your mask while on the side of the road to show the driver you have one??

It's the convenience of not having to coordinate with a shuttle and exit at a particular time that makes hitchhiking attractive - the cost of a shuttle isn't a problem but I'd rather avoid the coordination needed to meet the driver.?

I didn't do my JMT/Sierra Nevada hike in 2020 due to COVID but barring some major change in what's happening with Delta or fires, I am determined be on trail in just over two weeks... Put the MTR bucket in the mail today which always makes the upcoming adventure more real.

Re: #Conditions Air quality on trail? #Conditions

I was just up at Cottonwood Lakes last week and we were above the smoke at 11,000 feet. On the drive up it seemed the smoke stopped around 8,000. There's a fire north of Lake Isabella that's messing up the air in addition to the fires in Nor Cal.

I just got off trail from doing a section of the PCT July 20 - August 20, Onion Valley to South Lake Tahoe. ?We had no issue with air quality and smoke.

Things can change, but air quality was much better on the trail than in Owens Valley as of last week.?

Re: Red's Meadow Shuttle - Reservations #Transportation

You may know this already but note that the bus only runs for a week after labor day.

It looks like reservations are being accepted for the Red's Meadow shuttle bus this year. Has anyone been denied transportation without a reservation due to full shuttle buses?

I?am starting a hike from Red's Meadow after Labor Day and staying in a hiker cabin the night before my hike. I have not decided whether to day hike over Mammoth Pass to get to Red's Meadow or take the shuttle bus so I have not made any reservation and hoping to make that decision on the same day depending on whether I feel like doing the short day hike over Mammoth Pass. I suspect that reservations aren't really needed but wanted to see if anyone can report on what conditions have actually been like when taking the shuttle.? Thanks.

Re: Red's Meadow Shuttle - Reservations #Transportation

Thanks for the feedback. ?In prior years, I don't recall a reservation system at all but it sounds like it has been very busy lately. I'll be traveling after Labor Day but will probably buy a ticket ahead of time just in case I don't feel like hiking over Mammoth Pass. I did that short day hike to Red's prior to starting another hike a few years ago and it was a nice warmup hike. ??

Re: Red's Meadow Shuttle - Reservations #Transportation

Hiked in from Tuolumne Meadows, mid August, and stayed the night in a cabin at Red’s. Took the shuttle up to our car, which was parked at the Mammoth Ski parking area, without a reservation! No issues!

Re: Red's Meadow Shuttle - Reservations #Transportation

Hi Ravi,

I can confirm that reservations are mandatory and you will not be able to board the bus without one. Also note that if you make a reservation online you will still need to obtain a physical ticket at the ticketing booth. I found this out the hard way thinking having the reservation confirmation on my phone would suffice but I found out at the bus stop that a physical ticket would be required as well (along with a mask). I missed my planned for bus because the line to get tickets was quite long and it rolled out as I was running across the lawn to get to it after getting my ticket. I was not alone as a couple of other groups ran into the same problem. No problems though as they honored the tickets for the next bus. It seemed you could purchase at the window without a reservation if there was room on the bus but I wouldn’t count on it as all the buses were back to being packed standing room in the isles pre pandemic levels.

Good luck and have a great trip!

That’s the correct number, just hit zero for the desk.

They will put your permit in the box outside the office one day before your start. But you first have to call a day or two before your permit starts, during office hours, and talk to someone. An alternate phone number is 5360.

Hi there, I'm not sure if I hit the right button to ask the group a question or whether it is just to you (my apologies if I've done something wrong). I have a permit to hike in the Mono creek trail head in the Sierria National Forest. ?I understand the permit pick up is at the High Sierra Ranger Dist Office in Prather and was gold when I inquired via email that I could arrange to pick up the permit after hours, but all I was given was a phone number: (1599) 855-5355. ?Might you or anyone know if this the only way to contact the office for after hours permit pick-up? ?Much appreciated.. ??

Re: Tuolomne Meadows - Manzanar

Sorry, yes, I meant to say that those interned were U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry. My goof. The great displays at the museum there show how the different generations - first, 2nd, etc. - had different feelings about and reactions to being in the camps. I could have spent a full day there reading all the materials.?

Yes, hiking - but there's lots to do pre and post JMT hike too!
