I believe the flash has more support than the Mariposa. In my experience,
unless you get your total pack weight under 25lbs including food and water,
it's well worth the additional weight to have that

Yes the road is best. There is a potable water spigot at the trailer waste station just before visitor center. But the trail to Pearson’s lodge is the historical route.
