Re: Good resource for PCT section hike

Quick update - Casey Cox confirmed that Sonora Pass Resupply is permanently closed, and another resupply outfitter - Zero Day Resupply - is also likely to be permanently closed. Think both these happened during COVID.?

So, hitch to KM north is the closest resupply option. Or Casey said that twice-daily shuttles were running between the pass and KM last year but not sure if that will continue this year.

Not sure if you are on FB, but there are PCT groups there for every year, similar to the JMT groups. There’s even a specific group for “Sierra North PCT Section Hikers”. I’m not aware of a forum like this one for the PCT, but it may exist.

There is a business called “Sonora Pass Resupply” run by Casey Cox that could probably help you. I know Casey is active on some of the FB groups and you can just google and find the business details. There is otherwise no amenities at Sonora Pass (other than a sign) - the closest resupply would be a hitch to Kennedy Meadows north.
?
If you do that stretch, there’s a nice deviation from the PCT between TM and Sonora Pass; a more scenic and interesting route via Tilden and Mary Lakes that bypasses the traditionally buggy Jack Main Canyon portion of the PCT.

Northbound JMT hike is possible (still have to see if I can get a permit in the lottery from Whitney Portal), but I also got a permit from Tuolumne Meadows Glen Aluin pass-through for the July 4th week.

The primary plan would be to follow the PCT up to Wilma Lake, then loop down to Hetch Hetchy and then to White wolf.

But I have thought that I could also head north from Wilma and turn it into a PCT section hike maybe as far as highway I-80.

Sonora Pass and Carson Pass seem to be the best resupply points, so any info on them would be appreciated. As would a good recommendation for a PCT forum that may be a good resource.

You may be right Henning - just saw a post about them not operating in 2020 and selling out their stock. I sent Casey a DM to clarify.

Re: Good resource for PCT section hike

Sonora Pass is a good resupply point. From the pass, you have two options. Either hitch west on highway 108 to Kennedy Meadow North and resupply there. Optionally, you can hitch to the east then north on 395 to Bridgeport. First option is best. South Lake Tahoe via highway 50 is a better option than Carson Pass for resupply. If you didn’t want to go into town you may be able to resupply at Echo Lake Chalet. Not sure if they are accepting packages since I heard that the post office there has closed?? If you time it right, there is usually trail magic on Ebbetts and Carson Passes. Great stretch of trail.

Lembert Dome parking area and bear boxes

Hello all,
Do we have an info on Lembert dome long term parking situation and bear boxes?
We used to park there instead of all other options when hiking out of Lyell or Rafferty.
Is that area to be affected by major TM overhaul ?
Thank you ?

John, thanks for your help. We have contacted the Mt. Willimason Motel and will spend a night there with Resupply.

Re: Resupply and rest day in Independence at Mt. Williamson Motel #Resupply

Dieter...I can say from personal experience in 2021 that the Mt. Williamson Hotel and Basecamp was excellent in everyway. It is truly a hiker family run operation and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment...from the pick-up at the Onion Valley Trailhead by the legendary Lone Pine Kurt, to the clean clothes loaned to us whilst the laundry was being done, to the complementary cold beverage upon arrival.? Lauralyn and her family are doing it right.? The message from Inyo NF, while initially a bit confusing, was later clarified that a reasonable exit of 24 hours to resupply was perfectly ok.

Re: Thoughts on Snow Pack for mid-July to Mid Aug hike

As others have noted, it is indeed too early to tell. But if it remains an above-normal snow season, the trail will present an array of challenges (and some benefits too) that hikers should prepare for. I wrote about these factors after a late July 2017 South Lake to North Lake trek. You can see Wanda Lake and Evolution Basin looking rather wintry in the middle of summer!?

Being from New England, winter hiking meant learning to navigate trails with ice and snow, including proper use of an ice axe and the ability to self arrest.? Even with experience, snow travel can be physically demanding and tiring.? To anyone who is planning either a PCT or JMT hike this year in early summer, I strongly suggest getting some experience on traveling on snow including self arrest technique. There are guides in Lone Pine, Bishop and Mammoth that can provide such experience. Snow travel can be a unique and fun experience but you need to know before you go. ??

I hiked the JMT in mid to the end of August in 2017 and the mosquitos were pretty much everywhere, but I only found them to be bothersome during the day a couple of places.? It was more what you would expect, around dusk and in places near water.? I'm guessing it was typical of a month or 45 days earlier in an average(there is no normal in CA) snow year.

?

I will say that I'm glad I did it when I did as the scenery was simply spectacular and by that time the snow covered passes were easily manageable, with well defined routes.? I gained some snow hiking experience and confidence, without the risks and difficulty of hiking it a month earlier.

?

I happened to talk to a couple in Lone Pine at the bus stop a couple of days prior to my start and they were just off the trail.? They looked tired as you might expect, but in addition they didn't look happy.? Perhaps they were just exhausted, buy they didn't seem to have enjoyed the experience.? ?I can't say if it was all due to the conditions, but I recall them mentioning that as an issue for them.

Yes, now was somewhat crazy back in December, but January has been dry and no major rain/snow event is in sight. We are down to just ~20% over average and drop fast.

I do wish we’d have another high snow year though, we need the water + high snow Sierra hikes are epic!
