Re: Major bridge outage reported on Facebook
#Conditions
I share Peter's concern. Snow-covered talus is super-dangerous so I'd advise avoiding any of the proposed XC routes that include non-trivial stretches of talus. It would be very easy to break an ankle or badly lacerate a lower leg.
?
I've been on the Davis lakeside talus that Ned had mentioned and it was nasty even without snow. Elizabeth Wenk's Sirera South (9th Ed. p. 320) describes the Lamarck Col route as including "a steep descent over interminable blocky talus" on the West side of the Col. Karina notes Goethe Lake as "all talus".
?
I'd also hate to plan a route that required a potentially hazardous stretch near the end of the route. For example, suppose you were hiking Northbound out of the Evolution Basin and came to the Evolution Creek crossing at the base of the switchbacks. It would be a long hike back to get a resupply (probably to Bishop Pass). If that crossing looked dangerous, might you be inclined to accept a nastier risk than if you came to the crossing with a full pack.?
?
I'd be inclined (Southbound) to leave the JMT via Piute Pass and rejoin it via Bishop Pass, as the safest option. I think Ned agrees with me. After listing several alternate routes, he ends with: "The only re-route that is appropriate for basic backpackers is #1, the Bishop Pass/Piute Pass graded hiking trail and established road walks between the two pass's trailheads. It offers beautiful scenery, that is for sure, [though] it will take longer, require more fuel and food, and may mess with your permit (I have no clue), but it is the safest route to take with the least snow-hiking and creek crossing. If you plan for this re-route and are savvy with over-snow travel and making safe 'creek' (not 'river') crossings (which you have probably had to do just to get there this year's hiking season after such a huge winter), you will enjoy this alternate route." |

Hi John,
Thanks for the info.? So very nice to see you back and interacting.? Praying there were no long term effects from your incident.

开云体育Lange,I forgot about Duck tape! I’m fine with topo map and routes instead of trail - comes with ever growing desire of solitude and endless wonderings. Not fine with subjecting me to unknown danger, specially because I hike alone and also must be taking extra care of my extremities for I’m a professional violinist. I don’t go by motto :” you got this”. Route destination Hell -for -Sure though has a reverse philology effect ;) Karina Bezkrovnaia On Apr 21, 2023, at 04:57, C Brown via groups.io <snookpig@...> wrote:

开云体育Lots of beating around the bush. ?This year it will be extremely dangerous. This bridge outage is not unexpected ? I would not be supprized to see more bridges taken out in the melt. ?Experienced folks need to be careful not to encourage the new people to “just take a look”. ? 开云体育Completely agree, Karina. The passes over Glacier Divide are steep, won’t have bomber boot tracks like the JMT passes, and are pretty remote (if you get in strife). From the reports I’ve read about the western alternate, it’s meant to be scenic but is not a trail, it’s a route. Most JMT and PCT hikers are trail hikers, not many are comfortable going XC and navigating by topo map. I hope desperation doesn’t lead to trouble!Regarding bridge repair, someone call Macgyver and get a roll of duct tape… On 21 Apr 2023, at 11:04 am, Karina Bezkrovnaia via groups.io <kbezkrovnaia@...> wrote:

开云体育Lange ,I already looked at those bypasses … I don’t see this to be “ foreseeable” future. First it will make you break away from Wilderness and iconic Muir Pass. Unless you are going over Hell-for-Sure. Also will be far more complex to resupply and transportation as well as MTR business …. We shall see what transpires.? We could collectively crowdfund this bridge repair ;) I’m afraid that those off trail detours could bring more casualties… specially early in the season. That is right. This interactive map from PCTA clearly shows this. Re: Major bridge outage reported on Facebook

There has been some discussion on Reddit in particular about alternate routes. Several people have taken the "east bank" option before, and indicate that it gets quite cliffy and tricky (and if there is residual snow, possibly even harder?). Also, no one really seems to have direct experience with crossing Evolution Creek in high flow at the base of the EV cascades - will this even be possible? A tremendous amount of water will be coming down the casades with some serious energy - it does flatten out a the confluence with the San Joaquin, but will that be enough to make it similar to the Evolution Meadow crossing?
There was also discussion of "maybe the bridge could still be passable, even if dangerous?". Clearly the PCT hikers in particular are not wanting to give up on getting through that section. From that photo in the PCTA update, while the bridge is still connected to the abutments, it looks like it is sagging quite a bit in the middle. It's possible the bridge could be in the water when peak melt hits and the river rises, and will be susceptible to logs getting washed down the river, which could damage it further.? I strongly suspect the PCT hikers will be attempting the east bank scramble to bypass the bridge, and some may attempt the SHR bypass (Glacier Divide), and possibly the west side (Hell For Sure) bypass too. Seems really dangerous, since there is definitely a cohort of PCT hikers who have confidence well beyond their experience or ability. Hiking 700 miles through the desert doesn't make you a seasoned Sierra winter hiker. |

It sure does look like the bridge over Piute Creek, Anand! That picture is not of an entirely wooden bridge.?The "middle bridge" between the Piute Creek bridge in the north and the wooden San Joaquin bridge in the south, is also a steel-framed bridge with wood plank construction - same as the Piute Creek bridge. All indications are that the bridge in question is the steel-framed bridge crossing the San Joaquin about a mile north of the confluence with Evolution Creek. |

It faired a bit better than the one on the High Sierra Trail.

Re: Major bridge outage reported on Facebook

开云体育I remember when the bridge at Tully Holewas out in 1984. Looked similar and we walked up and down the broken bridge carefully ( snow had melted) and used a rope some one rigged to climb up to the trail. Perhaps when snow melts, the bridge can be more accurately assesed.? BTW no internet then or information about the trails then or where to cross.? Hi Teddy,?
This is awesome. Thank you. I guess a big question will be whether Evolution Creek will be safely crossable when folks get there if they try the obviously shortest work-around on the east side (of the N. Fork of the San Joaquín), where your annotation asks, “Passable?” Hopefully there will be real-time updates as the season progresses.? Charlie

Is that photo showing the remains of the bridge? It looks like Gozilla went through there!
