Re: Releasing a NOBO permit from TH #AA10 (Reds Mdw) to Happy Isles, this Friday night, Mar 24 #aa10 #permits

OK, this res is cancelled. Thank you for the informative posts re when someone may see it; ie at a random time. That was interesting to learn.

Be careful all you July trekkers this year.?

Re: Releasing a NOBO permit from TH #AA10 (Reds Mdw) to Happy Isles, this Friday night, Mar 24 #aa10 #permits

My experience last year was that released permits were not immediately available. I coordinated with someone last year on an Inyo trailhead, and they only got it because they were willing to sit in front of their computer for several hours, overnight, hitting the refresh from time to time, until it turned up. Seems like it was late at night.

Re: Releasing a NOBO permit from TH #AA10 (Reds Mdw) to Happy Isles, this Friday night, Mar 24 #aa10 #permits

Wait, your name is Randy also?!? Whoa.

Thank you for that info, Inga. It does, then, sound to my ears like human intervention is involved in posting up these cancellations.

So Randy, are you free to hover over the refresh button tomorrow? LMK tonite (I'll check here again in a few hours) and if so, I';l cxl this permit tomorrow am around 5:30am'sh. And wish you luck over the bots that scour for these.

permits and snowmelt timing

I have a permit for Red Cones starting August 19. I hope it is late enough! I don't much want to navigate a bunch of snow and high water with a rookie llama. But if not, I will get something for later on a walkup permit, if that appears to be possible. I anticipate a very high demand for late season permits this year. I have had no trouble at all getting walkups the last three years. And strangely enough, I got this reserved permit on my first try this year. I logged on at 7 a.m. and there it was.
Fortunately for me I live in So Cal so getting a last minute permit is no problem for me.
It has been great fun for me seeing the epic snow pictures from Mammoth. But I am sure it is no fun whatsoever for the residents.

Releasing a NOBO permit from TH #AA10 (Reds Mdw) to Happy Isles, this Friday night, Mar 24 #aa10 #permits

Here's a few days notice to anyone interested. Cancelling a permit for Five people to enter the JMT at Trailhead AA10, NOBO, up to and exiting Happy Isles. July 20-26, 2023. Will cancel this permit this coming Friday night.?

I presume it would be available on rec.gov come Saturday morning, but I've no detailed knowledge of how that works. IE, is it automated and appears at 7:00 am PT, or only when someone gets around to manually reflecting its availability on the site, perhaps after a cup of coffee?. I really dk.

Hope this is a helpful heads up to someone.?

Pray for snow melting!

Re: Congratulations Sierra Nevada #Conditions

I am also in desperate need of excuses to be away from work as long as possible..?

Congratulations Sierra Nevada #Conditions

..you have reached 225% of Snow Water Content (relative to April 1st) and there is still some Winter left.?

yes, we‘ll have to kiss our early season permits goodbye (rae lakes loop for me) but those July/August/September hikes willl be epic. Congrats Sierra!

Re: Welcome back John Ladd

Welcome back, John! Looking forward to your sage advice!

Re: Water Crossings in Y2023

Based on recent years experience, I think we can expect SEKI rangers to sign the Upper Basin detour (which actually eliminates a crossing.? In any event, it appears on Cal Topo and can be easily located by map or <----? GPS.? Dotted line here

Re: Water Crossings in Y2023

The log was quite substantial and well placed, meaning, if memory serves, not partially crossing or at an angle with one end low in the bank.? It was large enough to walk on and just small enough to straddle, like sitting on a horse.

That said, water is amazingly powerful and in the high flow I saw it was just above the water level so I could see it being taken out if this year's run off is sudden with a warm rainstorm or something?like that.

I wasn't really in the mindset of dealing with a difficult crossing last year, so didn't even consider the upstream alternative, but given that it doesn't add much distance, if I had any doubts I would just go that way.

Re: Sleeping Bag Question

I used a 15 degree sleeping bag for years in the Sierra Nevada and the only time I was too warm was camping at the front country Lodgepole at Sequoia National Park in mid August before hiking the High Sierra Trail connecting to the JMT. I just kept the bag partially open and it was fine.?

I subsequently switched from sleeping bags to quilts. I now have two quilts - a 10 degree from zPacks and a 30 degree from Enlightened Equipment. Everyone is different but for me the "comfort" rating is about 10 degrees more than the actual rating. I have never taken the 30 degree quilt to the high Sierra and doubt I would in the future. The 10 degree has kept me warm and I just open it up if it gets too warm.?

I don't know if I will be able to make a trip work this year but if I do, it will probably toward the later part of September. If I made that trip work, I might actually take both quilts and use the 10F inside the 30F. because I would expect potential nighttime temps in the teens or perhaps even lower where I would be going (Rae Lakes or 60 lakes). It would only be a short trip from Onion Valley for probably 2-3 nights, so food weight would be quite low, and the extra weight of the 30F quilt is only just over a pound.
