Colorado trail group
A bit off topic as this is the JMT group, but I have a question someone may have an answer for. I am looking for a group like this one but for the CT. I am not looking for anything on facebook or anything like that platform. Can you tell I am not a fan of that platform? Lol. I like this group and how it is run, and am hoping that their is one for the CT that is run as nice as this one.
Thanks in advance for any and all help Alan |
Re: High SierraCamp Loop
Yes, thanks for the tip. We had planned to do that last year as we had also heard the water report was pretty dry at Sunrise, but we ended up not making it that far due to injury and stayed at upper Cathedral Lake.? This year our permit is out of Sunrise TH, so different route and we will grab water at the last Sunrise Lake, before Sunrise HSC, or just camp near the lake, the first night. Then decide to move to HSC the next day, or add an extra 1.3 miles to our hike to Merced Lake HSC.

Re: High SierraCamp Loop
开云体育We carried water from upper Cathedral Lake when we did that trail. It was late season (sept) and a low snow year. So plan on that. ?It’s not ridiculously far to carry. On Apr 5, 2022, at 7:58 PM, William Vannerus via groups.io <masterv_15@...> wrote:

Re: High SierraCamp Loop
Hi Rick,
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, we tried to make Sunrise last year in late Aug., spent first night at upper Cathedral Lakes, and tapped out. Spent the next 4 days there, due to injury. This time we have Sunrise TH permit and we've come up the 1000 ft of switch backs coming up to junction of Sunrise & CloudsRest. I think we can make that and then water up at the last Sunrise Lake, bout 1.2 miles before Sunrise HSC, or stay near that lake and then we will take a rest day. Then press on to Merced Lake for 2 nights at Merced Lake HSC. Then over to Little Yosemite for a night and then out via Happy Isles. That's the plan so far ... Will check water report before we head out though ! regards, William |

Re: High SierraCamp Loop
Hi William,
I do not expect Sunrise to still have water by late August.?I came through Sunrise?in late July two years ago ?which was a similar poor winter) and all I could find were a few puddles of stale water a few miles south of Sunrise. For planning purposes, consider staying at Cathedral and then push past Sunrise. Ahead of the trip, try to get the latest water reports from fellow hikers/rangers. I know I am just adding another challenge for you to solve - I wish we would've had a decent winter here in CA. Rick |

Re: High SierraCamp Loop
I called a couple packers, but they only service outside Yosemite park. Yosemite concessionaire says since HSCs are not open this year, their pack mules are not running, but also said 3rd party packers could be running, but had no names of packers.? Guess I will keep googling and see if I can find any packer that would service Sunrise and Merced Lakes.
Yes, we also have reservations as Tuolumne Meadows Lodge and have not been canceled (though last 2 years we were canceled), so hope they decide to open in June (?). Looking forward to staying there again. |
Re: High SierraCamp Loop
Yes, I also checked and HSC's are closed for 2022.
Ya, we didn't make it to Sunrise last year, my wife's back was hurting too much and I had to take most of her pack weight and we ended up staying at upper Cathedral lake for a few days (which was very nice), but looking forward to Sunrise this year. Plan to stay 2 nights and check out the Sunrise lakes (have only seen the lower lake a few years back on hike to Clouds Rest, took a slight detour and spent the night :-) ) Also looking forward to Merced Lake.? Any idea if there are fish in the Lake ? thanks !! |
Re: High SierraCamp Loop
Yosemite says there are 6 packers licensed to provide various services in the Park:? whether they operate is not necessarily connected to the High Sierra Camps. In fact when I called to reconfirm the rep did not even seem aware that TML had any connection with the High Sierra Camps. ? |
Re: High SierraCamp Loop
I believe I read that all of them are closed. I am pretty sure the info is on the Yosemite National Park website. It was just announced very recently. Backpackers campground at Sunrise is one of my fave spots....I've also camped at Merced Lake when the HSCs are closed and it is quite lovely as well. Have fun On Mon, Apr 4, 2022 at 9:53 AM William Vannerus via <masterv_15=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote: Thanks for the feedback Nancy. --

Thanks for the feedback Nancy.
I hadn't heard the HSC's were closed again for 2022.? Do you know, does this include Tuolumne Meadows HSC too ? For Sunrise and Merced Lakes, we were just planning on staying in the backpackers campground areas. Yes, we are looking forward to this hike. Thanks for the tip on lightening our pack weights. Will check it out. regards |
Re: High SierraCamp Loop
I am not totally sure, but because the High Sierra camps are closed this year, I don't believe there will be mule pack services going either...but I'd check with Yosemite.? ?Can you lighten your packs a bit to help? Some use an app called lighterpack.com....if you fill that out and post here, you will get suggestions on things you can do to lighten up at bit. Hope this is helpful. Great stretch of trail, btw...you will love it.... On Mon, Apr 4, 2022 at 9:03 AM William Vannerus via <masterv_15=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote: Greetings, --
