Well, I don’t really want to steer this worse, but we appeared to have a report from PCT 2023 dated today that Woods creek bridge has some damage too…..
“ Update from my son, Alexander Stevens on the broken bridge after Forester pass heading to Bishop pass.

”Bridge @ km 1289 damaged. ~30 degree tilt, ~4 snapped cables, north beam split. I went over, but snow getting heavier, may cause more damage”
I need more info on that now ?

Here's the best image I have of the area between the confluence of Evolution Creek and the bridge that is out on the San Joaquin.

Thanks ahead to all the intrepid discoverers.?

Yes we have looked at the alternative of the east bank crossing near the mouth of Evo Creek and the walk to the JMT at the Bridge on that side.? Evo must fall quite a bit before it would be crossable, which is likely to take well into the season and will be difficult to predict.? Then the bank must be passable along that entire distance and there are a couple spots that look sketchy from topo maps and sat photos.? Both factors will require on site inspection, which we don't have yet, but at least a couple of us think the route along the bank will probably go, with some difficult work through aspen and talus,? if the creek is safely crossable.? I have noted that Evo flattens out and braids a bit just above the confluence, but it will take a lot better beta before we know.

Re: Major bridge outage reported on Facebook #Conditions

This is now quite a long thread, and apologies if this?question has been asked and answered.?
Has this short (less than 1 mile) cross-country work-around been deemed infeasible or ill-advised? It would involve crossing Evolution Creek. It's so obvious a possibility on the map that it must not work for some reason. (Maps created using Gaia.)
Thanks!

Re: Major bridge outage reported on Facebook #Conditions

Love it! Fab sense of humour.

I really appreciate all the info from this group. I had permits for the JMT for June which I released. I hiked from Yosemite to VVR last year, and am thinking to plan a trip in early September from VVR to Whitney this year all going well.

I hope folks will be safe out there in the early season. The Sierras can seem very mellow in good weather, and folks may forget these are mountains and wilderness.

However, one of the great joys of my return to the Sierras last year was meeting so many happy, confident, young people hiking the PCT, and loving the Sierras.

Geraldine.

OK, thanks.? I appreciate the? candor.

So what we have is someone's interpretation of a message from? a friend of a friend who may or may not have actually seen the bridge.?

And the info that the first PCT hikers have gone out at Bishop, 20+ miles short of the bridge in question.

I conclude that we do not have anything like a reliable report from anyone who has actually seen the bridge apart from the SEKI? aerial photo of about a month ago.? Anyone have anything more solid than that?

Thank you for sharing Henning. Granted as a single data point, it cannot be 100% relied upon on its own merit, but it is still something worth sharing.?
