Re: Ultralight Backpacks Used by Women on the JMT and InReach/Garmin units
Has anybody used Zoleo instead of inReach? ?I met a customer at REI who had purchased it the previous week and was going to use it for an upcoming trip. ?It is much cheaper than the mini 2, so I am not sure what I would be giving up. ?If you have used the Zoleo, what was your experience?

I'm pretty sure the American Alpine Club discount works for the inReach , I think about 20% off. The AAC is more climbing focused but it's a great organization and has a useful emergency rescue benefit, so might be worth looking into.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe original inReach Mini was replaced by the Mini 2 in 2022. This prompted discounting of the existing stock of original Mini.? On Apr 24, 2024, at 12:10?AM, Anand Kumar Sankaran <anand.sankaran@...> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýInReach mini 2 does not go on sale often (because they sell equally well at full price!) but occasionally, yes. They were on sale just before Christmas last year, but I haven¡¯t noticed them being on sale since then.

I bought it for $350 at REI during Nov 2022. REI had a $50 sale for it at that time. Does the inReach Mini 2 ever come on sale anywhere? ?It seems REI 20% off does not work on GPS devices. |
Re: Ultralight Backpacks Used by Women on the JMT and InReach/Garmin units
Hello CJ and Everyone,
I am 5'3" and 105#. ?I use a Gossamer Gear Mariposa (60L), size S, with the smallest hipbelt (which I had to buy separately when I bought it in 2021). ?It has a maximum weight recommendation of 30-35#, which I try to adhere to. ?I also have an Osprey Aura 50L AG, which I bought in 2015. ?I still use it when I'm not trying to minimize weight. ?I like both these packs. I use a Garmin InReach Mini, which I bought in 2020, for tracking (in extended mode), and sending daily preset emails. ?I turn it off at night. ?So - iit only needs recharging every 4-7 days. Barb |

ESTA adding Sunday service north to Reno, Saturday service south the Lancaster
I've posted this over on the facebook pages for JMT and HST, but I know there's some people here who (understandably) don't participate in those forums:
Good News from Eastern Sierra Transit Authority
At Friday's board meeting they set in motion a plan to start service from Lone Pine to Reno on Sundays (making the run 7 days a week except holidays) and to run from Mammoth Lakes to Lancaster on Saturdays (making that direction Mon-Sat).
This will make it much easier to get out of Lone Pine and Bishop via public transit on the weekends.
Technically, it isn't official - they need to go through a public comment period, and the final approval will be at the June 13th board meeting, service to start July 1st.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHMG packs are kinda crossing the gap from cottage to mainstream, they sell them at our local outdoors shops in Sydney, Australia too.On 11 Apr 2024, at 5:16?AM, Greg <greg.r.ford@...> wrote:

I'm 5'4", but have a somewhat longer torso for my height.? I have two packs that I rotate between depending on how much my gear will weigh for a trip (including food and water).? I take my Durston Kakwa 55 for most of my trips.? I can comfortably carry around 40 pounds in it, and I've pushed it to the low 50's on a trip that required huge water carries.? When I'm heading out for long periods of time (more than 10 days without resupplying) or carrying heavy winter gear, I'll take my Osprey Xena 70.? It's great for the heaviest carries, but it weighs 5 lbs itself.?? I've also tried the Hyperlite Mountain Gear packs, but I found the Kakwa 55 liter to be far more comfortable.?? |
Re: Ultralight Backpacks Used by Women on the JMT and InReach/Garmin units
There is no port for a hydration hose on the ula ultra ohm, nor is there a separate bladder divider/holder on the inside. I have the Bearikade Weekender, and slide it vertically inside. Note the previous comment, there is absolutely no way the Weekender will fit horizontally inside an Ohm, it's just too narrow. I have strapped the Weekender horizontally outside, but I stopped because I found myself wondering all day if it would fall off (it did not, but still).?

Re: Ultralight Backpacks Used by Women on the JMT and InReach/Garmin units
I had the old Exo 58, which is great, even for larger loads than 35lbs. I finally wore it out on the JMT. Got a replacement Exos 58, but had to put on hip pockets since they removed them.
Looks like they put them back on the Exos 58 and Exos Pro 55. Might not be worth buying for the pockets, but that extra 1lb savings is tempting me to look at the Pro. |
Re: Ultralight Backpacks Used by Women on the JMT and InReach/Garmin units
Eja also comes in the Pro model which is 1/3 lighter (that gets it under 2 lbs) for only an additional 20$.? I have the Exos Pro and would not trade it for any pack I have seen or used.? I took it out in cold weather last year, with full BV 450 and a few pounds of extra warmies, water and food at 26 lbs.? Hardly felt it.?? Long weekend in Yosemite, late summer it was at 16. I don't make many gear recommendations, but don't overlook this one.
