I hiked down Shepherd Pass in 2015. Unless you start very early, I would suggest spending the night at Anvil Camp to acclimate and then start the second day going over the pass. The trail was a bit rough above Anvil camp and up to the pass, but once over the pass the trail is great until you join the JMT at Tyndall Creek. The trailhead is quite remote. I was able to hitchhike from the trailhead into Independence but my guess is that doing the reverse might be more difficult and it was probably just luck that I got a ride and avoided a long road walk. Probably best to get a shuttle up to the trailhead and to start early. It starts at a relatively low elevation and gets hot.
