Another great, free tool is Sentinelhub Playground. A ranger directed me to this site earlier in the year.
It has a fresh, good-resolution image from the Sentile-2 satellite every five days. Very helpful to assess conditions. You can also toggle between true-color (clouds get in the way) and infrared.
Even better, the URL contains the location, zoom and date parameters, meaning you can bookmark a specific location.
Here a link to the Whitney area:
Tip for better navigation: in the upper right corner, click the satellite icon, uncheck the satellite¡¯s name to see the map with labels.
John, I¡¯ve been using Caltopo. ?Even the free version has an option for a current fire data overlay. ?Go to or, if you want to go directly to the Creek Fire area with just the VIIRS satellite IR signatures, .? VIIRS goes over twice a day and it usually takes a few hours from all the satellite data to be posted.? The paid version gives you weekly higher-res satellite maps, which are good for finding the real snow line in early summer.? ?¨C Jim Ringland
