Hi Caroline

?

The answer is exactly the same as it has always been, and that is likely to continue. You would have to use a separate JAWS version, but thanks for checking.

Hi everyone. I ask this question every time and the answer is no, but I’m asking again because I can’t remember if there’s been a change since the last time I did an install which was quite some time ago, and I keep thinking that there might have been a change. Do I still have to install J-Say into a separate JAWS version if I’m running Leasey? I’ve been looking for an updated answer all afternoon but the closest I’ve come is in the J-Say installation guide where it states:

?

Under most circumstances, it is not necessary to remove any JAWS script files you may have previously installed. However, before installing J-Say, we advise that you check with us to determine whether or not there are likely to be any conflicts with existing scripts.

?

I hate asking again, but hope someone can give me the latest info before I install. Thanks in advance!

Re: J-Say command to invoke the JAWS Task List

There is mixed news with this one.
1. The command, Select a Program, as I've said previously brings up the Microsoft list of running programs. One can move through this list with, Move Down, etc, then Confirm That to focus the program.
That has served us well for many years and I do not see an issue with this.
2. However, now that the Insert F10 jaws list was redesigned in the last year, particularly so as to close programs, I tested this with Dragon. I accept people cannot do this at the moment. I am glad to say this list does no longer have the problems it once did.
So I am more than happy to restore that functionality so people have access to that list instead.

Sometimes you can say press insert, and then a key stroke combination. This does not always work. But sometimes it does.

There is, Select a Program. That brings up a list of running programs.

Now that is not quite the same as insert F10, because the last time I checked, there were some compatibility issues between that list and Dragon.

I will check it next week.

J-Say Update

开云体育

This is a free update for existing users of J-Say 22.

See below for updating instructions.

If you cannot update the product yourself, remote assistance is available.

?

Changes:

?

The primary purpose of the update is to facilitate access to Microsoft Teams version 2. Dragon itself is not equipped to handle Teams version 2, however a full set of J-Say voice and keyboard commands not only allow you to be more efficient with using Teams, but in addition they reduce unnecessary speech output in the application in the same way as offered by our JAWS scripts for Teams.

?

Additional Changes:

1. If people have received J-Say training in the past, hopefully they will know of the existence of the Dictation Box. This is used to dictate into applications not officially supported by Dragon.

J-Say now has its own equivalent of the Dictation Box which provides more condensed speech output for its prompt and works more efficiently in Microsoft Teams.

Say, Dictation Box, to deploy this.

?

2. The command, Start Backup, should be correctly backing up a Dragon 16 Voice Profile.

?

3. When Google search results are deployed, activating one of the items should now deploy the correct page.

?

4. The commands, Keyboard Help On and Keyboard Help Off, have been added by customer request.

?

5. It is now easily possible to scan through items within the JAWS Speech History without focus moving away from the existing application. Individual Speech History segments can be copied or viewed. A full set of voice and keyboard commands exist for managing Speech History items. Refer to Chapter 46 of the Learning Module.

?

Updating.

?

in order to download the J-Say software update. Please under no circumstances use this link unless J-Say is already installed.

?

To repeat, if you think it would be difficult for you to update the software, please send a message to

brian@...

so as to arrange an appointment to have the update installed for you.

My apologies Dean, I neglected to answer your other question.

?

In respect of Gmail navigation, I think the best thing you can do for now is to ask the user to use the press keyboard commands to move to the different functions. This is not going to be ideal but it may get you at least to the places where he or she needs to be, such as, press control key 1, or whatever the keyboard shortcut is.

This user won’t be using Outlook. As for Chrome settings, I’m having trouble with the logic of the settings screens, available from the alt+f menu. I used to do this smoothly, but either it has changed over the years or I have, more likely the latter. From the main menu, I try to choose a category, perhaps OnStartUp. I can’t find a consistent pattern of whether to use Space or Enter to choose menu items. When I choose one, sometimes forms mode comes on, sometimes it comes on and turns off immediately. If I do select a category on which to act, I can’t figure out reliably how to switch to another category. I’m obviously missing something here.

Hi Dean

?

In relation to the settings, are you talking about the Chrome browser, then ALT+F, then Settings?

If you know how to make use of the web with J-Say there are absolutely no difficulties with browsing those items or activating any one of them. I’ve just checked.

?

In terms of Gmail, no, there are no special J-Say commands.

I generally disregard most Dragon commands because if you use a Dragon command, you are not going to get appropriate speech output in most cases.

The reason there are no special commands is because noone has ever asked for them! If people really do want them there is no problem in adding them. But most people who use J-Say use Outlook.

Now, as the years move on that may well change but that is the case at the moment.

To be honest it couldn’t be more accessible if it tried.

?

So, I arrow down to one of the options. You mentioned, On Startup.

Press Enter.

JAWS should go into forms mode, which if you are using J-Say should be set to Manual operation.

When forms mode is active, press Tab once. That is common practice with a lot of modern apps.

The page should then refresh and you can look at the new screen. I’ve just tried about three of these.

?

Even better than that, if you then go back through the list of settings categories, JAWS tells you which one is active so you know.

Hi Brian,

?

Thank you so much for your ongoing support and fixing my J-Say related problems.

?

I thought that your attached note was important enough to pass along to ??Anne Hatton, the head of the assistive technology team at the Lighthouse of the Palm ??Beaches. I'm sure there are other current or potential users of J-say in the five-county area they serve. Also, although it's not my decision I suggest passing the info along to Lenny who is the DBS funded technical support for the Tampa as well as Palm Beach area Lighthouses.

?

As you suggested, I will recommend to anyone wishing to know more about J-say that they consult your website which, I believe, can be found in your accompanying documentation

?

Brian, once again I am happy to say both my complete satisfaction with your technical support speed and completeness as well as J-say itself. As I've mentioned to you before, but delight in saying as often as I can, with J-Say I can dictate edit and format a 2000 word document in two hours or less. J-Say is clearly superior to all other alternatives regardless of platform available now. I said that in a presentation to the ATIA and would say it to anyone. J-Say will be an important element in the success of the launch of our new subscription newsletter.

?

Best regards and continuing success to you and your team!

Subject: [J-Say] Technical Support

?

Hi to all

?

A few issues have arisen lately in respect of using JAWS with the J-Say software.

If a user is experiencing a problem with JAWS, he or she is contacting Vispero Technical Support.

They do not know about how J-Say works.

The assumption on their part is that J-Say is the problem. They therefore remove all the JAWS settings. They do not attempt to fix the problem first without removing the JAWS settings.

The settings are not backed up for later reference or to reinstate them.

?

This not only leaves a user without a computer which can be used, but it means potentially any special scripting which has been done above and beyond that which J-Say provides is potentially lost.

It causes immense frustration.

The whole point of users having the J-Say software is that they cannot use the keyboard, so if JAWS is returned to its factory settings then they may as well not have it at all.

?

If you are a J-Say user, and you experience problems with JAWS, please contact Hartgen Consultancy first.

If the problem cannot be resolved right away the very least that can happen is that a backup of settings will be made so that if JAWS needs to be installed again, there is something to refer back to.

The best that can happen is that all of the settings will be worked through systematically to find the cause of whatever the problem is.

?

This does not only occur with J-Say. If any additional scripts are installed, the quick fix apparently is to remove them without investigating the cause.
