Headphones Jack
10
Does anyone know if the headphones jack is stereo or monauarl? My Yeasu FT-897 will accept and play either, but my IC-746 doesn't seem to recognize my monaural headphones 1/4" plug. I have the manual for the 746, but it doesn't state which one it is wired for. I know it's not the headphones because they play in the FT-897. Any help is appreciated as I really don't want to tear into it. I have the service manual for the FT897, but not the IC746. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Original IC-746 Service manual
15
Hi folks, Wondering whether there is a genuine Service manual out there? My copy is so bad I can't identify some components on the overlay. Most copied versions I've seen have a caveat that small components may not be visible in the scans? Happy to pay for any shipping cost. Many thanks for your time. Cheers Steve VK2LW

low vhf sensitivity
hi all my 746 appears to have a bit of low sensitivity compared to my ic5100 i don't just mean S meter reading its not massive difference but it definitely is low. if i switch the rx preamp on the linear amplifier it is a touch better can i assume the front end fet maybe down or something else to look at..?

Anyone have any luck using an external keyer like the Logikey K1 or the MFJ 401D? If so any special ways to connect either? Phil K2JF

antenna tuner internal and outboard

I'm waiting for delivery of my 746 and have a question about settings. I have the LDG Z11 Pro II and a 20-40 dipole on my roof. If I have the LDG connected to back of the rig do I turn off internal tuner to run only through the LDG? Otherwise how do I know which tuner is doing the tuning? K2JF

paddle polarity not recognized
5
Just hooked up my 746 and am having some issues. 1) my paddles are connected the right way for dots and dashes, yet it's only the dashes I'm getting when connected in the back. In the front it's ok 2) I'm trying to see how the rig's internal tuner will handle my dipole but can't see how to turn off the external tuner. 3) band edge beep is not working even though I have it set up.

Hi all, Can the 746 switch the Icom PS-55 power supply? Also if anyone knows, can the IC-275 switch the PS-55? Thanks, Bob W4JFA

Icom 746 not transmitting
I have addressed common no transmission in any band. Rf predriver ic 151, PA drivers q1, q2,q3. Q1 was no good, Ic151 also no good. J101 applying voltage to Q1 was open, replaced it with a SDiode. Voltage checks are good. I'm without a signal tracer at this time. Otherwise my reciever is great. For me this is a hobby radio. If there are any ideas, message me. Also I bought this unit as is. So who knows. Thanks All Don L

HELP !!! IC746 AVEC Interfaces U5 Link pour Icom
3
Hello everyone! For a friend, I am looking for information on the operation of an ICOM IC746 with a U5 Link Interface for Icom. We want to do FT8 with WSJT-X. The installation of the program went well. The interface is well connected to the transceiver with the "Hac Doc" cord. The reception works. On the other hand, as soon as the interface cord is connected to the PC, the Icon 746 immediately starts transmitting; and it is no longer possible to stop it. The only way is to unplug the cord. QUESTION: - Has anyone used the same conditions (IC 746 + U5 Link Interfaces for Icom) and managed to make the whole thing work? - How is the switch to transmitting and receiving controlled (Cat system or other means)? - Is there any special programming to do in the IC 746 menus? Thank you for your PRECISE help on the subject. 73's to all from F6FUJ Ren¨¦ in VALLANS (79) Mail: F6FUJ@... PS: For my part, I use a Yaesu FT 897 and WSJT-X, and it works perfectly. Bonjour ¨¤ Tous ! Pour un copain, je suis ¨¤ la recherche d'infos sur le fonctionnement d'un ICOM IC746 avec une Interface U5 Link pour Icom. Nous souhaitons faire du FT8 avec WSJT-X. FT8 Power
Hello, I am new to the group with a question and I apologize if this has been covered. When I run FT8, I can only get about 50 watts out before the ALC kicks in. I am using the slider in WSJT to adjust the power output. What am I missing here? Probably something obvious that I am just not computing. Thanks, Doug N9AH

IC 746 Apparent AGC issue
My IC 476 has had an issue with very low receive audio volume when the AGC is on either fast or slow. However the volume is normal when the AGC is off. Of course when the AGC is off the S meter doesn't work. Has anyone else had the same issue and how was it solved? Jim AJ4CA

IC-746 Low Rx Audio on SSB/CW/RTTY
7
My radio started this today, low RX audio on SSB/CW/RTTY. AM receive is fine and the signal levels on SSB/CW/RTTY look fine. Anyone know what I should do to address this? I've checked squelch, TWIN PBF and all the other controls I can find. Still no response. I already reset the CPU, no joy. Anybody? Thanks, Tom

Display question
10
Hi folks, How long should a display on a 746 which is set to 100% display brightness take to come up to full brightness when powered up after being off overnight? I have two 746 PRO units, both light up immediately on power up but at a lower brightness level and then gradually come up to full display in about 20 seconds. Is that normal? 73 John KN3I

CW transmit frequency question
2
I operated my 746 in the ARRL CW DX contest last weekend, and quickly discovered I wasn't sure if I was transmitting on the same frequency as the DX station. Do I match (by ear) the pitch of his CW to the frequency set with the PITCH control? Suppose my PITCH set to 500 Hz. I hear a DX station calling CQ on 28.053 MHz (10 meters was _hot_ last weekend!), and turn VFO A until his pitch is 500 Hz (or as close as my ears can tell) Am I transmitting on 28.053? Seems like I should be. The manual says the PITCH control "Shifts the received CW audio pitch and monitored CW audio pitch without changing the operating frequency." indeed, when I press the key, I hear the correct monitor pitch. But is there a way to hear that monitor tone _without_ transmitting on the air? I tried the MONITOR button, but that didn't do the trick. I ask because sometimes I "forget" the frequency set with the PITCH control, and I don't accurately tune-in a CW signal to match it. It would be great if I could press a button to hear the monitor tone; then I'd know what pitch to match with the VFO knob. Thanks for all information. 73, Mike N4CF

PC interface question
13
I would like to connect my 746 to a Win10 PC for logging purposes. As I understand it, the Remote jack is the one to use, but I need a level converter like the now-unavailable CT-17. I found a schematic of the CT-17 (attached) and see it uses a MAX232 RS-232-to-logic-level chip. I have 10-15 of these in a drawer, so decided to wire up my own single-channel converter inside a 3d-printed shell for a DB9 connector. I'm concerned that the CT-17 connects the MAX's logic-level input and output pins together to receive and transmit on a single wire. I don't see anything in the MAX datasheet that says the outputs are open-collector, or that it's OK to pull them to ground. Does anyone know if this schematic is correct, and if the CT-17 does indeed connect the logic-level pins together? My circuit is all wired-up, and I could just plug it into the 746, but the MAX is glued to the shell "dead-bug" style with the pins up. If I blow it, removing it will be a PITA. I'd like to know first. 8^) Thanks. 73, Mike N4CF Thanks 488x256 (0x0) 0 B
