CR-2025 battery replacement for ICOM 751

I need/want to replace my memory CR-2025 battery with tabs in my IC751 transceiver.? Where can I buy a couple CR-2025 with tabs that are good quality and have a somewhat recent date code on them?? I was looking at past posts regarding an upgrade non volatile memory board but I don't think they are available anymore.? So if that is the case I need to replace the battery.? (I understand you need to supply 3 volts to the volatile memory while replacing the CR-2025 }? Anyone on here with good advice?

Richard, You soldered wires to a non tab CR-2025?? Did it take solder easily?? I'm worried about heat damage by doing so.
Lee, w0vt? I see eBay has tons of the tab type made for Game Boy, but not sure how good those batteries are.? They look like cheap Chinese batteries with no name.? If you can solder to a battery I might do that since you can buy good quality name brand standard CR-2025.
Lee, w0vt

Worst case scenario use a pair of AAA cells in a holder, outboarded and wired in. That's what I did with my 735.

I bought a bunch of coin cell battery holders for about a buck a piece.? The wires on them are about 6” long.? I have put these in a few Icoms and haven’t had a problem.? In 10 years, it’ll be very easy to change the battery.? Just make sure that you do all your work with the power ON or a 5V power source connected to the module or you will loose the volatile memory.

I needed to replace a memory battery in a recently purchased IC-R100 compact wideband receiver, a larger CR3032 battery. The factory original is virtually inaccessible, hard wired with solder pins and strong double backed adhesive tape affixed just behind the display. I thought of soldering a replacement in parallel and locating the new battery somewhere more accessible but could not locate a battery holder that size so I adhered the new battery to the inside of the cover with electrical tape, but the solder pins on the new battery would touch the chassis and discharge the battery. I put the radio and project aside as a futile effort. The R100 model is seen frequently on eBay; now I know why. ?

Or, mount two battery holders next to each other in parallel. When it's time,
install your new battery in the empty battery holder and then remove the old one
and dispose of it properly. That keeps power to the memories at all times unless
you don't replace it in a timely manner.

I always thought mounting on the rear panel, if possible, on any radio needing a
coin cell replaced every 5 or so years would make it very convenient to change
out the battery.

As stated earlier, I mounted?a small holder on the rear of my 735 and installed two AAA cells in it. Worked great and easy change.

Some really interesting and creative solutions here worth considering!

FWIW I like to keep my gear looking "factory" so I replaced the ICOM memory board in my 751A with the PIEXX board - works great and eliminated the battery issue entirely.
I do not have any connection with PIEXX - just a satisfied end user of the product.

That's one of those, "Why didn't Icom use non-volatile ROM (RAM?) when they
designed the radio?" things.

For the most part, Icom didn't seem to go out of their way to make things break
and become obsolete in a planned manner, but they had to realize that this would
(sort-of) ruin a radio, or cause a lot of headaches in re-flashing the ROM
(RAM?).

I ordered a couple BR2325 HCN batteries.? (Rig call for a BR2323 1HC.? Looks like the 1HC type is obsolete.? Looks like the only difference is the HCN has 2-pins on one side instead of 1-pin. Looks like you can cut off one pin and wind up with the proper configuration.? (I also received my $100 replacement non volatile board.? Not sure which way I will go with this.)

As long as the battery is about 3 volts or more, I wouldn't replace the battery. I have several rigs with RAM boards that still have the original battery and still going strong. I check the batteries once a year or so and have never seen one discharged to the point of doing a battery replacement. I can't confirm it but my understand is that the battery gets a very minute trickle charge if it is powered regularly. Rigs that sit in a closet not used many years are the ones that are most likely to have a problem. At least you have secured a replacement aftermarket board for the day you may need it. With my luck the day I would need the replacement board they wont be available any longer! Maybe I should get on the stick and pick up a spare for that day.
