Gentlemen (and ladies too of course)!!? I've followed the instructions to burn an image to my USB drive, and it loads perfectly on my MacBook Pro.? However, after a short time my Mac goes into sleep mode, and when the spacebar is depressed, a little window comes up asking me to unlock HamPC.? Does anyone know what characters are used to unlock this program?? Ernie, W5NH

Hi Ernie,
The password to unlock the HamPC user is, simply, "hampc". This is documented at?
And are you saying HamPC runs on your x86 MacBook Pro? This is exciting news as I don't have a MacBook to test against.

Hi Dave
In case it is of any interest to you, I jut installed HamPC? 3.01 to a refurbished Dell Latitude 7480 notebook. This sports 16GB of DDR4 memory and? came with a 256GB SSD drive and a core i7 CPU.
I booted it from a Lint USB drive and used the recover feature to install the hamPC image to the internal SSD. Then ran gparted to grow the root partition. Seems to be working well.

Ernie,
I am beyond excited that you are able to run HamPC on an Intel-based Macbook Pro. You are the first user to tell me you have done so!
My XYL and I lived full time in a 40' RV for two years. Unfortunately, it was too cramped for the things we want to do -- such as play radio and antique computers and do "real" cooking... An RV kitchen is simply too limited for my XYL who is a gourmet chef. So we went back to brick-n-mortar living and got rid of the RV. We may rent an RV in the future or buy a tiny camper for vacations, however!
You did mention being unable to connect to the network. Can you provide any error messages and/or screen captures of error messages to show what is happening/not happening?
Thanks and 73,

Hi Dave Further testing of the 3.0.1 image on the Latitude 7480 has revealed an issue. I see no audio devices and get no sound from the OS or any apps. I tried adding drivers, but it does not seem to understand that audio hardware is present.
The audio works fine with MINT and Windoze 10, so I don't think the hardware is at fault.
At this time, I am burning a DVD to try bare bones Xubuntu 22.04.1 to see if it spots the audio hardware. I will keep you posted.

Hi John,
Thanks for the report.
I agree, the audio hardware would not seem to be the issue, rather the audio software components. If audio is also not present on Xubuntu 22.04, then I would say Xubuntu is the issue...

I had a DVD with full Ubuntu 22.04.1 already burned, so while I burned Xubuntu DVD, I booted the 7480 off of the full Monte. Audio worked fine with that. I listened to internet radio on the built-in speakers without issue.
Then, I booted off of Xubuntu and had the same experience. Out-of-the-box XUbuntu sees the 7480 audio devices and loads the proper drivers.
I suspect either the process that I am using to install hamPC to the internal SSD drive is not working or something may be missing in the hamPC image.
My process was to boot LINT from a live USB and then use its image writing app to burn the hamPC image to the internal SSD.

John,
If you are getting audio from Xubuntu 22.04 on the same PC where HamPC does not deliver audio, then there is something missing on HamPC, and I will need to investigate.
I want HamPC and HamPi to be the best they can be for all users. I am but one person, and I have a very limited selection of PCs available, so reports like yours are critical for me to identify and correct deficiencies. Thank you for your report.

Dave, if
there is any experimentation that you'd like me to perform on
my MacBook, just say the word.? I'd be happy to help any way I

My XYL and I lived full time in a 40' RV for two years.

I gotta'
admit that there are several things I DO miss about being on
the road.? I miss my real radio shack with my tower and beam,
and I miss my shop as I'm a "do it yourselfer" of sorts and a
woodworker.? Every time I need a tool, I have to go down to
the local Ace Hardware and replace the 23 of it I have in
storage up in Washington.? Having said that, there are
certainly benefits to this lifestyle.? I don't pay anything
for utilities; they're all included in the $5.00 per day
parking fee.? Rita and I have seen and experienced so much
together being on the road, and the freedom to do what you
want when you want is hard to beat.? I'm 79 years old, so I'm
not sure how much longer we're going to be able to enjoy this
lifestyle, but we're sure going to enjoy ourselves in the mean
time.
You did mention being unable to connect to the network. Can
you provide any error messages and/or screen captures of error
messages to show what is happening/not happening?
No error
messages.? When I click on the network icon at the top-right
corner of the screen, I can see all the Internet access
equipment listed with no problem.? However, when I try to
connect to one of them, and I'm asked for the password to
enter, the message coming back says something to the effect
that my password won't allow access.? I know I'm using the
correct password (I designed the network), and I've even tried
other access points (cell phone, iPad, Rita's phone), and I
get the same response each time.? Not really sure how to
proceed.
If this, by any chance, is an easy workaround, your counsel
would be appreciated greatly.

Ernie,
I'm glad you're enjoying life on the road... Btw, we had to pay a leasing fee of several hundred a month to park... Where are you finding $5/day camping? And where do you get your electricity and water and waste dumps?
Back to HamPC...
Are you sure the password you think?you're typing matches what is being entered into the password dialog?
Here's what I mean... On my Evolve III Maestro laptop, there is some sort of "Function Lock" engaged and when I type the letter "J" for example, a completely different letter/symbol/number is displayed on screen. I have to hold down the "Function" key to type the actual letters...
Can you try opening a word processor or other text editor and see if when you type the password, it actually matches what you typed?
Also, if you can't get wireless working, you can always plug in an Ethernet cable...as a workaround...
Thanks and 73,

Ernie,
I am beyond excited that you are able to run HamPC on an
Intel-based Macbook Pro. You are the first user to tell me you
have done so!
Dave, if
there is any experimentation that you'd like me to perform on
my MacBook, just say the word.? I'd be happy to help any way I
can.
My XYL and I lived full time in a 40' RV for two years.
Unfortunately, it was too cramped for the things we want to do
-- such as play radio and antique computers and do "real"
cooking... An RV kitchen is simply too limited for my XYL who
is a gourmet chef. So we went back to brick-n-mortar living
and got rid of the RV. We may rent an RV in the future or buy
a tiny camper for vacations, however!
I gotta'
admit that there are several things I DO miss about being on

Sorry
for the long delay answering you.? The reason is that
Rita and I live full-time in our big RV, and today was
moving day.? We just got parked and setup.? And yes,
your software package works quite well on my MacBook
Pro.? The Mac's about 4 or 5 years old.? When booting
the Pro, I hold down the "Control" key during the boot
process, and am presented with three options; boot to
the Mac OS, boot to Windows 10 (I'm using BootCamp to
access a second partition on the SSD), and third,
booting to the USB thumbdrive with "your" software and
OS.? No need to get into any BIOS boot sequence.? I
chose the thumbdrive, and your OS takes over.? Works
great.? There are several things I haven't been able
to make work yet, but I'd like to spend some time
trying to do so before I ask for your help.? One thing
I desperately want to conquer is Internet access.? I
can see my network, but I can't connect.? I'd really
like to do this as there may be software updates that
can be downloaded, and without his capability, I'm
sure I'll be missing out - HA!
Dave, you can communicate with me any time via this
medium, but here's my phone number.

I've been meaning to try this again myself - last time I had a go, OS X wouldn't recognise the image as an image. I'll give it another go when I have a moment.

Can you please file a bug report at ?

Then, I booted off of Xubuntu and had the same experience. Out-of-the-box XUbuntu sees the 7480 audio devices and loads the proper drivers.
I suspect either the process that I am using to install hamPC to the internal SSD drive is not working or something may be missing in the hamPC image.
My process was to boot LINT from a live USB and then use its image writing app to burn the hamPC image to the internal SSD.

I agree, the audio hardware would not seem to be the issue, rather the audio software components. If audio is also not present on Xubuntu 22.04, then I would say Xubuntu is the issue...

Hi again, Dave!!
First, I’ve included your nomination for Ham of the Year as have many others I’m sure. On Oct 3, 2022, at 10:58 AM, Dave Slotter, W3DJS < slotter@...> wrote:
Ernie,
I'm glad you're enjoying life on the road... Btw, we had to pay a leasing fee of several hundred a month to park... Where are you finding $5/day camping?
Rita and I are members of Thousand Trails, which costs us about $550.00 per year plus the initial one-time purchase of the membership. ?For that we get our first fifty stays in Thousand Trails parks for free each year, and the rest for only $5.00 per night. ?It’s perfect for full timers as long as you don’t mind finding a place to park in their parks - some 83 throughout the US. ?Also, with our upgraded membership, we’re only allowed to stay in place for no longer than three weeks when we have to move to another park. ?I think that’s a great idea as it keeps the “population” rotating instead of stagnant and discourages trashy living areas. And where do you get your electricity and water and waste dumps?
Those hookups are right at each parking place.
Back to HamPC...
Are you sure the password you?think?you're typing matches what is being entered into the password dialog?
I’m relatively certain as there is a little box that can be checked to allow one to see what’s being entered. ?
Here's what I mean... On my Evolve III Maestro laptop, there is some sort of "Function Lock" engaged and when I type the letter "J" for example, a completely different letter/symbol/number is displayed on screen. I have to hold down the "Function" key to type the actual letters...

See above.
Also, if you can't get wireless working, you can always plug in an Ethernet cable...as a workaround...
I’ll give that a shot. ?I also have a Raspberry Pi 400. ?I’m going to try burning a MicroSD card with your software and see if it will run on that.
