Re: I seem to be doing something wrong

I'm praying that your wife gets better.

How is she?

Re: I seem to be doing something wrong

Sounds great!?I¡¯m looking forward to it!

We discussed easier install options -

? 1.) If the need for an EFI-based image boot can be removed, and a BIOS boot was a possibility, the disk image would be more compatible with more machines.

? 2.) If it were like an ISO installer, it would be easier yet.

? 3.) What would be easiest and most flexible for end users would to have everything packaged up in DEB binary files, so any Ubuntu image could just directly use them.

?Anyhow, it¡¯s a great project! Thanks so much!

Re: I seem to be doing something wrong

Hi, this is Dave, W3DJS. I know there's a lot of anticipation towards an updated release. I'm hoping I can find some time to do this during the Thanksgiving Break...

Please stay tuned...

Right now my linbpq node is running from my HamPI because I got sick of fsck-ing my primary node laptop every month.
I tried everything to get HamPC to boot, EFI, legacy, compressed and uncompressed, no dice.
Ended up throwing Linux Lite on it for now.

Re: I seem to be doing something wrong

Edited

A couple of things would make HamPC easier and make it on par with HamPi -
? 1.) To be caught up with 1.5 or the latest version used on the Raspberry Pi
? 2a.) Boot option 1 - If it was bootable on BIOS ("Legacy Boot"). Then, both EFI and BIOS users could boot. It would be easier to support. It would be nice to rename it to a .img or .bin, if it remains as a hard disk image.
? ? -or-
? 2b.) Boot option 2 - If it was a true .iso "DVD" bootable, with an installer, that would be a nice option, as well.

But hey, thanks for your -> *excellent* <- work on this!

I just used Chirp on it, yesterday, and it made programming my pair of Baofengs very easy to edit the repeater list and clone!

Now, on to my Yaesu FT-991a... "Stay tuned."

Thanks again!

Re: How to install on an iMac?

I don't own an Intel iMac so I have no understanding of what is happening here. I'm guessing you've booted other Linux distributions on your iMac?

Not sure where to go from here, but it looks like the software is not functional for me.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

I do need to push out a new version, and hopefully with a better distribution format.

Re: How to install on an iMac?

I just got done arguing about doing just this with a Microsoft Surface tablet (I won that arguement) and have a fairly recent Mac laptop sitting around. Unless someone beats me to an answer I will give it a spin tonigt and see if I can get it to at least run live from thr USB key.

For the Surface I had to boot a Clonezilla USB key and then clone the HamPC image from a different USB key to the storage in the Surface. I got it working but think I have found hardware limitations on the Surface.

Re: I seem to be doing something wrong

I don't know if this is still something people want to discuss, but I just got HamPC 1.2b booted up on a PC -- 2, actually.

Of course, it's named an "iso" but really should be an "img" or "bin" or something else, since it's a hard disk image.

First uncompress with XZ:
??xz -d HamPC_v1.2b_rc1.iso.xz

Then, I plugging in my USB device and looked for if with fdisk
? fdisk -l

I saw it on /dev/sdc (had a /dev/sdc1 partition)

I followed the steps from??-
??dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc bs=1024 count=1440
? dd if=HamPC_v1.2b_rc1.iso?of=/dev/sdc count=512 conv=notrunc

I then tried to boot it, but no luck...

Later, I found out my machine was not set to boot up an EFI partition, just legacy BIOS. (I think USB boot was also disables, IIRC.)

I enabled EFI and it worked. It also worked on a second machine that allowed EFI and USB boot options.

My next goal is to put it in VirtualBox. So far, I can't get VBoxManage to convert the whole drive into a VDI or a VMDK. (I'm still working on it, though.)

Hi Dave, Thanks for the response! Sorry about not reading the group heading correctly.. lol I¡¯ll also pick up the PI group . I ran the install command on top of raspberrian. I¡¯ll look for the Hampi image to flash directly to the SD. Maybe that will be a better fit.. Thanks!!!
