SX-100 restore project
Happened across a SX100 that needs a lot of TLC. Always wanted one of these since I seen my first one back in 1967 as a kid. Radio has always been a love of mine and have in recent years developed a love for old tube gear. I want to get this radio back in shape for my personal collection. Tearing into it this evening, I found at least one burnt resistor coming off the can cap. It must have gotten quite hot. So I know there are several in the area that will need replacing just to be safe. I have a cap can on order. Wanted to keep the original look so went with a Hayseed Hamfest filter cap. All of the red capacitors look rough. Many have cracks and discoloration. I have plenty of those on hand for the job in the values for this radio. Finally got all the tubes out of the radio today. Hallicrafters assembly people must have had tiny hands is all I can say. All but one of the tubes checked good. One of the 6C4 tubes was borderline. Luckily I have some of those also.?
Case looks really rough. I can handle refinishing it easily.? I want to clean the chassis really good before I do anything. I read a document where one member is using Scrubbing Bubbles and hosed off the chassis. Think this will be my method next before replacing any components. I will definitely lean on any guidance the group may supply. I own three of these..SX-96, 99 and the 100.? Also have two chassis for a 99 in the wings. They also need a lot of love. Thanks for the welcome to the group Keith KD4AVP |
Need some help in properly identifying two resistors. One is burnt beyond recognition. I think the other is a 100 ohm if reading it correctly.? These feed off one of the 20mfd filter caps if I am looking at this correctly. Photo is attached. Can I get a verification on these values? ? If the junction of the burned resistor, the 39k and the cap, connects to pin 4 of T5, the burned resistor is R30 a 3.3k. Can't tell for sure, not enough circuit in the photo. There are only 2 39K/1w resistors in the 100. R6 is the other one and it goes to
the screen grid of V1.?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI guess anything you want that C37 leaks heavily, or is even short. Looking at the picture posted, the case is cracked¡ I never encountered one of those Cornell-Dubilier ¡°Tiny Chief¡± caps that survived, even NOS ones. If there is more of those in this set, a complete cleanup is in order. ? 73, Jacques, VE2JFE in Montreal |
Yes that is the plan Jacques.
I have those on hand to do that part.? The two resistors had me puzzled but once Walt & Bill pointed out some values for me, I found them on the schematic.? Thank you both very much for those pointers. I think every tiny chief in this radio has some form of decay.? Mostly cracks. After a good cleaning, I will begin replacing them. Hate to do a shotgun method but given as bad of shape they are, not really much of a choice. Considering having the case powder coated instead of painting it myself.? Will explore that later after I get some life in the radio. |

Just to throw this in on an SX-100 thread since it's been three years or so since I first sent a link to the list, my set of schematics for a Mark 1A are available here: This set is easier to read than the single-page one that is typically used - I tried to break functional units into separate pages.? As always, remember that?there may be mistakes (or differences in your particular unit), although I've gone over them several times.?? -David On Tue, Mar 19, 2024 at 3:01?PM waltcates <cateswa@...> wrote:

Little more clean up on the internals this evening. ?Decided against the ¡°bath¡± approach when a good spray down with CRC gave these results. Lubed the appropriate parts. Dials turn really smooth. Overall pleased with results so far. Awaiting the cap can and repair resistors.? See no point going further till those get here. I did snag a 100hz crystal today just in case. I am worried this one may be damaged.?

"...decided against bath...." Good decision! You can always take an extra hour to get the last bits of dirt out of an old chassis.? It will take much longer to fix/repair/replace a radio that might be damaged because it was hosed down. (Yes, I know about Tektronix etc....) A careful cleaning also helps find odd things on a rig (missing hardware, poor solder, etc) that might otherwise go unnoticed and beside, the journey is the destination. You did a really nice job. That's a great looking chassis! John K5MO On Wed, Mar 20, 2024 at 8:45?AM Keith <kd4avp@...> wrote:

This is SO excellent Dave! I have used it so many times.? The only edits I did were on my copy. There on each page where the arrows come in and go out of the page, I put the page that each arrow goes to or comes from for easier use. On Tue, Mar 19, 2024 at 7:50?PM DavidF19808 <df19808@...> wrote:

Thank you so much John! Yes as I was reflecting on the bath idea, my dog assistant looked at me with that "You sure about this?" look. Had second thoughts as it probably would make more issues to fix rather than just leaving a crud behind. I can live with a little crud. I want a working radio. Thank you so much for your kind words! I will be leaning on the group as I go thru this project.?
