Hello
?
And thank you for allowing my participation in the Hallicrafters Group.
Have been in amateur radio quite a while and restored several Swans, Hammarlund, Heathkit and Hallicrafter.
?
After wishing for an SX for some time,? obtained two SX-101 MK3 in fairly good condition, same owner for 15 years.
?
Best to ask before doing something regretful, so three basic questions.
?
1. How to remove chassis from cabinet, I see four screws on the bottom of the case, along with those on front panel ?
?
2 How to remove Front Panel, as glass has dropped down on one SX ?
?
3 Does anyone have a Mk 3 schematic to share that can be enlarged for old eyes ?
?
Thanks to all.

There is a very nice SX-101 MKIII manual in our files section.

Congratulations on acquiring the Sx101's. I absolutely love mine. You should only need to remove the 8 screws on the front to remove the chassis. It's quite heavy. I purchased my capacitor kit from Hayseed Hamfest. My faceplate was in excellent shape so I can't help you with that. Good luck with your restoration.

Thank you, Bill and Chuck. Have purchased the re-cap from Hayseed as well. No doubt the SX is the heaviest radio I have tackled yet. Rebuilding my work bench currently for a bit more room. Very excited about getting the better of the two SX back to operation. Both are fairly clean, one has a bit cleaner looking chassis. Previous owner said they were working fine ten year ago. 73 Charles

Charles, ? I will certainly be following your progress on the SX-101.? I just recently purchased an SX-100 MK 1A that was advertised as not being turned up for 18 years. The pictures of the unit look nice, faceplate looks very good, and so does the chassis with minimal surface rust in some spots.? However, the real proof is when I physically see it; due to arrive this Thursday.? I figure you have to start somewhere as none of these older rigs will come in pristine condition, unless it has already been restored. I have another rig on the bench right now, so the SX-100 will have to wait till I finish that one up.? But at least I can pull it out of the box and give it a good once over, as well as order a recap kit for it. ? Thank you, ? Mike W5CUL ?

It's always great when another old rig gets back on the air. Hopefully the younger generations will keep it going. Nothing better than the look of tubes glowing and the smell of old electronics. Lol These are the ones I acquired. Fortunately they were in fairly good condition when I got them.

When I got my novice ticket in 1975 my wife bought me a HT32A/SX101A. After upgrading to general class like a idiot I sold them. Always regret that. When I moved last year from Phoenix to Ohio I set my sights on finding builders. This wonderful ham in Indiana was selling several HT32's. I picked the best one. He also told me he had a SX101a. Thought I had died and gone to heaven. Lol. Other than the weight, they are just great. Chuck

I concur - things of beauty.
I have an HT-32B paired with an SX-115.? Also have an HT-37 paired with and SX-101A.
I don't mean to be critical but I think the pair looks better (and is possibly more ergonomic) with the XMTR on the left.? I think that's the way Halli typically displayed them in their ads.

I actually agree with you Bob. However I just enlarged my desk area and now being 70 years old, I placed the transmitter on the desk then the receiver. They are just so heavy I left them there. My son will be visiting in a month and I will have him muscle them into the reverse position. I was surprised I was even able to lift them. Sucks getting old. Lol

I'm right-handed.? So, whenever I've
had seperate
transmitters and receivers, the receiver
seemed to
be easier to use on the right - XMTR on the
left.
in my Novice days, I had an SX-140K and an
HT40K.
(Driven partly by low
finances...)
?
After I got my general, I added a Lafayette
HA-90 VFO,
partly because it looked good and proper
next to the
SX-140K.? Worked very well, too, of
course.? I still
have that VFO.? They tell me it's kinda
rare.? Still works
fine, and puts out a
BUNCH of signal. Couple watts.
One could go QRP with it alone.? I aslo
added a TO-Keyer.
Always loved that one, too.
?
?
?
I think my proudest creation in those days
was
my 3-straight key paddle set-up.? Still
got
that, too.? The red paddles came off a
derilict
bug as salvage.? Still works
great.
?
Later I had the Drake B twins, and also
liked the
receiver on the right.

But the SX-101 and the HT-37 were always
my
ultimate dream rig.

Old and Slow maybe, but getting closer to starting the SX.
Got my work bench enlarged, purchase the re-cap kits from Hayseed and just acquired an HP-651B for the 50.5Khz alignment. The HP appears to be in good condition, all functions work and seems pretty stable, as the HP-8640 would not go down low enough in frequency. Finished a 1939 Philco for our small local museum and now finishing up a Heathkit SB-200 amp so maybe can get started on the SX this summer.
Have an enjoyed and safe Memorial Day, remember our military past and present.

SX 101 perhaps my 'FAVORITE" radio - but alas I wound up with 3 of them and trying to sell one on craigslist. It STILL beats a lot of the 'new' solid state machines AND can actually be quieter than some I have found.
Good luck on the fix - relatively easy to work on - but one I got that was 'stored' - turned out it had an issue in the top 'box' - know why it got stored - a bit of a chore to disconnect and get inside. have fun. 73 Larry F W6EF Sacramento area

Hello: It has been forever, a few more projects jumped ahead of the SX101 MK3. Question about the 50.5Khz alignment. Is the HP-651B Signal Generator suitable for this job ? Also have an HP-8640B but does not tune low enough. Any advice on how to approach the alignment appreciated. My email is CRY42@.... Thanks Charles
