Image 1 looks like an S-27?? (UHF [sic] receiver)... it used a 955 for the front end... there's a picture of one in the Manhattan Project images... think it was for monitoring the radar-altmeter device that produced the air burst.
The S-27 is a fun receiver. When properly restored and used with a good antenna and speaker, this model performs surprisingly well on the FM BCB.
