SR 150
Last summer I picked up a SR 150 and matching power supply/speaker. It was in the typical dirty scratched condition and didn't work. I wanted to say that Walt's repair manual was invaluable. I did the wash down with simple green rather than scrubbing bubbles because it was available. That worked very well followed by the garden hose and a few days in the summer sun. I sanded the case to bare metal and sprayed it with rustoleum hammered finish pewter. I recapped the supply and the electrolytic capacitors in the rig per Walt's doc. I followed the alignment tips and found that I needed to shift the USB carrier oscillator a bit to bring up the CW power levels. Thanks Walt, the tips in your manual are gold. I'm not sure if you were a technical writer or not, but I haven't seen better service docs. I still need to spend time on the vfo tracking across the dial but that can come later. I also added a side tone oscillator as I am primarily a CW op and prefer using a bug. I made up a little board with a couple relays, one to switch the grid block voltage and one to switch the audio output from my side tone oscillator. I now have 12 volts on the key instead of grid block voltage. This is all easily removable with no non reversible changes and I leave a printed note with the mod details inside the cabinet in a cool location behind the bottom cover. I am impressed with how stable the vfo is and the nice comfortable sound to the receiver in this model. The first contact was a nice chat with an op in France. Lots of fun!? 73 Don ve3ids? |

Thanks for the kind words on the repair document. They are all living documents, ever few months I take one and update it.

I always wondered why there was no built-in side tone for CW in this rig. Possible reasons: Primarily intended for SSB use? Primarily intended as a mobile rig? Expected CW ops to be using the Halli paddle and keyer (with audio)? Does anyone know? I have an SR-150 in very nice cosmetic condition.? I haven't used it in a few years - but I have had it on the air.? I did a little CW with it - but that was rather difficult w/o a sidetone.? I'd like to get it on the air again one of these days. Hope I have success with the two rescues I picked up last summer also. Now that the wife is well on her way to recovery from the knee replacement I should be able to spend some time at the work bench where the first unit is already waiting for me. Always did like the looks of? the Hallicrafters gear from that era but then I just like boatanchors in general, HI! A lot of people complained about the sidetone issue, that is why the 400 and 2000 have sidetone.

开云体育I believe it was the norm for 1960s transceivers. ?The Collins KWM-2/A and Drake TR3/4 series transceivers were designed primarily for mobile SSB operation and have similar CW limitations. ? ? I recently acquired my first TR-4Cw and KWM-2A transceivers and the Hallicrafters SR-400A is the better CW performer.? In CW mode, the KWM-2A uses an audio injection scheme into the balanced modulator.? To minimize close-spaced sidebands from the injection scheme, a 1700 Hz tone is used into the modulator then split to the receiver’s AF stage for sidetone. ?A CW tone less than 1700 Hz results in multiple close-spaced carriers just as it does with the Collins 32S-1 transmitter.? I think The SR 150 tops the list of receivers. Note, a lot of people replace the FL1 and the carrier oscillator crystals in their?400's and 2000's with those from the SR-150.

I would say you're right!? A few of the reasons were that transceivers were generally used mobile, used primarily for SSB and any good Hallicrafters owner also owned a TO Keyer! (or maybe a Heathkit keyer!) In the early 70's, when I first got the Novice license, my very first project was to build a tube type electronic keyer!? I used 2 old J-38? "hand" keys? (From Fair Radio Sales) bolted together side-by-side for a paddle. It worked great! Today, I sometimes hear newer amateurs attempting to use a "Bug" but I almost NEVER hear anyone who can send readable CW with them.? They almost always have the "DIT's" set too fast for the sending speed and/or? the "DAH's" are far too short.......But as always, I digress! I have a KWM-2A.? I would trade it for a nice SR-150!!? I also have not done the mod. I would imagine the mod to the 400 is pretty much plug and play the 150 and 400 use the same input and output tuning coils.?
The 2000 however has a different output loading coil. That could cause some problems. Just be aware, it may not be plug and play in the 2000.?
Perhaps someone on the forum has done the mod on the 2000 and will jump in.

The Xtals are 1648.1 and 1651.7 in the SR150.? ?I do not know the difference in the FL1.? ?It does not say the bandwidth in the 150 manual or schematic.? ?I suspect it is wider?

The specs on the filter are rather embedded.
The transmitter audio response for the 150 is 600Hz to 2800Hz.
The transmitter audio response for the 400 and 2000 is 500Hz to 2400Hz.
You can play around with the math and get the IF frequencies. Just remember the stated response ends ie 600 and 2800 are the shoulders of the passband and are 3db down.

The 150 filter is a little wider, a little better high frequency audio. It just sounds a little better.

My SR400 schematic appears to indicate 1650 and 1652.8 kHz crystals.? FL1 is a 1650 6-pole filter.

The Drake TR-4 came with 2.1 kHz filters.? I replaced them in mine with the aftermarket Inrad 2.5kHz filters.
Not only do I get much better reports on the air but the receive fidelity is a LOT easier to listen to! I get great audio reports with my HT-32B.? I think it's got a 3kHz filter in it? I couldn't find the filter specs in the SR-400 manual.? I guess they really don't say what the BW? is. but it would seem to be somewhere around 2.3-2.5 kHz based on the shift in the carrier frequencies?? In the past I mostly monitored my CW via my receiver but if you are working split frequencies you can't and a decent side tone is a necessity.
