poking my head out of lurkdom....

Hello there.

I never mentioned this, but my first introduction to LOTR was the cartoon made in the early 80s of the Hobbit.? I didn't watch FoTR in the theaters, but I did get the extended edition and watched it at home.? Of course my favorite became Haldir (I'm a sucker for most minor characters).

I wrote my first fanfic when I was all of twelve.? I had my two favorite cartoons (not the Hobbit) and thought what would happen if they met?? I know!? I'll write it!? I didn't write anymore until about twenty years ago (was 2000 that long ago?) in another fandom, and then of course LoTR.? Or beloved Vi (whom I still dearly miss) beta'ed my first story.

It was a blood bath.

But, Vi kept on working on my stuff.? I asked her later on "why".? She mentioned that she saw potential in my work.? Some time ago I found my original story and read through it.? Yes it reads like a 12-year-old wrote it, but I can now see what Vi had told me.

Shortly before we lost her I made the jump over to original fiction.? She actually helped me because what I was working on came out of a fanfic.? I had to change too many things to make it work, so I took a deep breath and cut ties.? It was the most freeing thing I ever did.? She knew where it came from and I kept asking her if she could see the original character in my story.? When she said "no" I knew I was on my way.? Plus the character was a minister.? With her being a PK she kept telling me "oh, that's what Papa would do!"? I told her that I wasn't trying to channel her father and she understood.? So I got the mindset of a minister correct.? :)

My other story is also historical.? That's what I published first.? I also dedicated it to Vi's memory.? I've two more I'm working on, but they're not fantasy.? My fanfic (which are now all Star Wars -- not the new stuff except for Mando!) is sci-fi, while my originals are in the historical setting.? Right now I'm writing a novelized account of the Great Siege of Malta (and it's not WWII).? Writing a war story is the hardest thing I've ever done, and it takes a certain mindset to do it.?? If anyone wants to alpha/beta read it, let me know.

I'm also thinking of looking over my LoTR story and uploading it here, but it is a hard R.? Not sure if groups dot io will take too kindly to that.

Finally getting a chance to respond. Been reading everyone's posts. Kristen here. My entry Tolkien character? Probably Glorfindel. When I first read the books in high school that character just jumped out to me first. I was disappointed his role in the movies was taken over by Arwen.

I am also a teach - CTE (career and tech ed). I teach a variety of courses from electronics and robotics, to animal science and horticulture. I even had to teach Foods 1 one semester! I just put in for retirement (thank you administration for getting so wishy-washy I cannot deal with it anymore). This school year has been the wost year teaching in my entire career. (and admin is really contributing to that). we have gone from remote, to hybrid, to what I am calling remotely-hybrid. we are supposed to be teaching remotely, but they are bringing in students whenever the kids want to come in. I get the students with special needs, but I was getting a potluck of odd students coming in and trying to keep them in line while teaching online was just insane.?

I got started writing fanfic through RPG's online. I miss those Yahoo RPG groups. I did several LOTR and POTC. From there I started branching out to writing my own fanfic. I started on a LOTR one, but a person who offered to beta my work really tore it to pieces so I pretty much dropped writing fanfics for quite some time. I moved to POTC for quite some time as I was involved in one Yahoo group that did weekly prompts for one-shots. I enjoyed those and began posting them online getting some decent reviews. So I started writing longer fics, but again stuck to my POTC fandom.? Most of the LOTR RPG groups never seemed to click so I was more focused on my Captain Jack. lol Since then I have added Marvel (Loki mostly) fanfic. I started one Loki fanfic (still working on it) after an assignment from one of my grad classes. I was supposed to pick something modern that kids would relate to and address diversity. So I asked my kids - "what movie should I see". They picked Thor: The Dark World. Went to see it (again- had already seen it), but watching it from the perspective of diversity opened up several interesting aspects. Got an A on my paper, but I had picked up several issues in the plot I disliked, so started a Loki fic. Planned it to about 18-20 chapters. ... several years later (and six complete stories later) I am still working on it. I do need to dust it off one of these days and finish it. After the Hobbit came out, I started writing some LOTR fanfic with a friend. We've been writing and posting it as we have time. One day, after a phone conversation with my friend where we talked about "what if Loki and Thranduil met"... i started this insane crossover. I write it for pure fun, and have had one reader challenge me to hit 100 chapters (I'm in the 50's right now).
