FS HP8935 and 8922M 4
Since the Ft Wayne Indiana Hamfest is coming up, Nov 16.... I have two units that I am taking offers on. Both have been tested on my bench and I have not found any problems at all. The 8935 has a beat up case but the front panel is in excellent shape. It has a front panel cover. The 8922 has only a 25 Watt input and does have the spectrum analyzer. All connectors on both units are in good shape. If you would like to pick up one of these units at Ft Wayne, Make an offer. I am in Indianapolis. Wally KC9INK

8935/E6380A
Hi All, I have what I think is a fairly late model h/w & s/w unit, see screen shot. Would love to share latest firmware, but getting it out of onboard flash into PCMCIA card might be tricky if at all. Looking for guidance? The unit had 3 dead batteries, 2 on PCB and the pair of AA at the rear with free leaked battery alkaline substance. The unit is very healthy and close enough to calibration even though all backup batteries were flat¡.. This has been asked, has anyone obtained the calibration s/w card? Regards Gerald VK3GM

Features and options in an HP 8920A 20
I am helping the family of a deceased friend sell his equipment. One item is an HP 8920A. I know that it was being used regularly, and it powers-up with no complaints. My goal is to understand the installed options so that I can ask for the best possible price. When powered-up, it indicates "V. A.10.11". Is this the hardware version or the software version? If software, should I try to upgrade to a later version before offering the unit for sale? The option and serial number tags on the back of the unit are as follows: 001 002 003 004 005 013 3235A02033 What does the serial number indicate? The self-generated option list produces the items below. My understanding of each is listed in parentheses. Did I understand them correctly? OPTIONAL RAM (256K RAM? What is the extra RAM used for?) SIGNALING (Tone/Digital ¨C CDCSS, DTMF, 1-TONE and many others) I/O OPTION (DC Current Sensing, I/O: GPIB/RS-232) SPECTRUM ANALYZER (with tracking generator and ACP) HIGH STABILITY REF (OCXO high stability time base) C MESSAGE (weighted filter) Any help is appreciated. FOR SALE: HP8924C CRT Module 2
I have a 8924C CRT module available for a nominal amount plus shipping. It has light burns but this doesn't really affect the operation. A few years ago, I changed it out for a new module but when in operation I didn't notice a lot of difference. I could probably could have left it alone. Drop me a note if you can use it. KE6CD

HP 8935 Ext Ref Problem 5
My 8395 works fine with the internal reference and I did ti alignment with an external source. However it does not lock with a 10 MHz external signal - shows "unlock" but once in a while it will Lock. If I put in a 10.000.022 MHz signal it will lock to that...but of course all the signals and freq counts are off also... I have the Temp Comp Xtl. 1813-1106 Any Suggestions??

HP8924C duplexer tuning setup 15
I have one of those small UHF duplexers, and I think I need to tune it up. I took the ARES group's portable UHF repeater out yesterday and most of the time the repeater would receive my signal and transmit a carrier and courtesy tone at distance. But I would not hear my audio out until I was only a few blocks away. Where can I find the best documentation for how to set up the HP8924C tracking gen and see/adjust the nulls on the duplexer TX & RX sides? Thanks folks. ** Mark Weisenfeld K7TUM *

HP 8935 has false alarm for overvoltage duplex out 6
I get the duplex overvoltage message with the alarm sound which drives me nuts. I am not even using the duplex out! I mostly use RF I/O for my application. I tried measurement reset, but it continues with the alarm and message with no relief . Is there a way to shut off the alarm? I suppose this problem is telling me the power supply needs attention or something. The test set seems to work otherwise. Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Jim

HP 8924C For Sale
Unit is in working condition. I opened it up to see if there were any power supply (swollen caps) issues and everything looks good to go. The screen does appear to have a slight "burn in (see photo) but functions fine. Comes with a power cord. Looking for the best "reasonable" offer. I am sure it would benefit someone that utilizes this test set more than I (I have another, smaller unit). Rather not throw it up on eBay if at all possible. Take care!! P.S. The location of this unit is in Clearwater, Fl. Edit 7-18-2024 This test set is now on eBay with added local pickup option Hewlitt Packard HP8924C on eBay

HP8924C Memory cards for calibration data in 2024 11
I read as many old threads as I could before this. Waded through tons of web pages and some of that is summarized here. I've installed a 20dB 100 watt attenuator in my 8924C and need to load the matching cal files. Now, down the rabbit hole... looking for a solution for loading 39 kilobits of calibration data into the 8924C. The files are available here on the forum. For loading in cal data, the 8924C can look at the following locations: external HPIB disk drive, Internal ROM, Internal RAM, external front panel plug in SRAM (or ROM) card. External disk drives are scarce. Unsure how to interface such an old disk drive to a modern PC or how to load the cal files into a HPIB disk drive (or to load into a PCMCIA card). There are some web projects out there to emulate the HPIB disk drives. That's a bigger and deeper rabbit hole. Memory cards background info - not the same as the slim, 40 pin card as used in the portable instruments such as 85xx series spectrum analyzers or the 892x portable service monitors.. The correct cards for the 8924C are sometimes called "Epson memory cards". Based on a 68 pin 16 bit or 32 bit CardBus interface for PCMCIA cards. Loading data into them can be difficult from current generation computers. Amtronix no longer sells the cards that were part of their 60w and 100w upgrade kits with the attenuator assembly and new front panel sticker. I think a CardBus type 1 is 16 bit only and is the slimmer 3mm card. It might be what the HP 16 kB and 64 kB cards use. Cardbus type 2 is the 5mm card and can use 16 or 32 bit addressing. A few HP SRAM cards can be found on Ebay for big prices. I don't know if a combination of a "small" 32 Gb Compact Flash card and a CF card to PCMCIA bus adapter might work. Or maybe somebody out there has cards to sell? Thanks! Jim

HP8935 RF Gen & RF Analyzer not working 17
Turned on my 8935 a couple days ago to check a low band Vertex radio that had been set up for 6 meters. No power or frequency readings on the RF Analyzer nor was the RF signal generator heard thru the radios receiver, so I thought it was the radio. Turns out the RF Gen and RF Analyzer sections are not working on the 8935. Finally found the service manual so I could perform the extended tests (unit turns on and passes self test), and pretty much everything on the RF side failed (too many failures to list). All AF tests passed fine, with zero errors. It worked fine about 6 months ago when I last used it, so I am at a total loss regarding what could have happened. I'm leaning towards partial power supply failure, which seems to be a common thread with these units. Any ideas where I should zero in on, module wise or test wise? Thanks in advance, Bryan K6RBJ

LM1881 and GBS8200: Diagnostics and other issues
Hi, I've built a GBS8200 converter with the well known LM1881 circuit. There is a clever design available for a 3D printed (FDM) enclosure: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4666227 (provides BNC slots, originally seems to be intended for RGBS via BNC or SCART to BNC inputs). Unfortunately, I have some woes with the converter. It reports 'no signal' in RGBS (or the other H/Vsync RGB mode), but I can see at the BNC composite video input the signal is present. I followed Ralph's wiring as detailed in /g/HP8924-Family-Spectrum-Analyzers/topic/82180602 Pending some proper diagnostics with the oscilloscope, my protoboard with the LM1881 has decoupling capacitors (100nF) at VCC and P2 and P6 as described by Ralph, and doesn't seem like there is anything obviously wrong with it. I quote Ralph's wiring notes verbatim: On the LM1881 connect pin 1 to the # 4 (gray wire) pin of the 8 pin RGBS input connector. Pin 2 to a .1 UF capacitor and then to the Green input of the 8 pin RGBS connector A wire from that junction goes to the input from the 8924C. Pin 4 to ground. Pin 6 has a .1 UF and 680 K resistor in parallel to ground. Pin 8 goes to 5 volts. Pins 3,5,7 are not used. I crimped connectors to make a harness so I can unplug the LM1881 board if desired. Green for RGBS is crimped together with the pin 2 trace of the LM1881 (composite video input, per https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm1881.pdf) LM1881 might also be replaceable by the more modern LMH1980 which can operate at 3.3V. This is quite convenient since the GBS8200 has regulated 3.3V at the 0-ohm jumper/resistor labeled R1, and it's sufficiently filtered through decoupling caps and at least one smoothing electrolytic cap. Does anyone have close up pictures of their LM1881 board? Is there anything I am missing? Could my 8200 be defective? I performed the modification with the 50k resistors at the RGB traces with the ASIC/FPGA under microscope and I know there are no bridges or solder wicks anywhere. Cheers

8920A Input Module Problem 3
Hello everybody, I acquired a used 8920A in decent condition with what was described to me as "smelly power supply". Sure enough, many of elctrolytics were leaking and starting to damage the pcb. After replacing all those including the 2 safety capacitors (small cracks), voltages seem to be well within spec. I was getting ready to contact Amtronix to send the unit in for check-up/calibration when I noticed, that it started to fail many of the RF tests. Of course this was not disclosed to me... Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Looking for spectrum analyzer boards for the HP 8920A 21
I have two 8920A:s where one is working perfect and the other one fails on the RF Diag tests for the spectrum analyzer module: I have seen this issue before on other units and replacing the SA module helped. My next step is to use the SA module from my working unit to verify that it is indeed the SA module in the failing unit that is causing this. So, I am looking for used but working SA modules for the HP 8920A and I have seen that they are available with various part numbers such as: 08920-61026 (this is the one in my 8920A) 08920-61101 08920-61852 Preferably with the calibration card if available. I am located in Sweden.

Power Supply Clicking 5
8924C PSU Took the PS out of the chassis and it looks like the 47uf cap was already replaced in my PSU unit, the green light is on, but when the power button is pressed, the supply makes a clicking noise and the unit doesnt power up. I dont have much switching PSU supply experience though im thinking a mosfet or something along those lines? Any help troubleshooting this would be much appreciated! David

8935 no power up 9
My 8935 was working fine. Passes all tests. It was powered up on my bench and suddenly shut down. It will not power up. The GFI is not tripped. If I turn on the power switch the unlock led blinks and there is a click in the speaker, this repeats over and over. I am guessing there is a power supply problem. Any suggestions here before I dig into it? Thanks Rik Rasmussen
