8920A and 8920B faults

Hi everyone,
I have a couple of questions regarding an 8920A and a 8920B I own. I have a fault on each and I am hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.
I noticed when running rf-diags on the 8920A I get a failure at antenna input detector, I have run through the assembly level repair to try and diagnose it but have hit the limit of my knowledge, has anyone here experienced this before?

The 8920B has a different fault, it seems to be when I change the reference level in the spec analyzer from -10dBm to -20dBm or anything below, the signal is almost completely lost.
The screen shots I captured are of a tracking gen set at the level of -40dBm with the spec an set to 502MHz center and 1GHz span, as you can see when I change from -10 to -20 the entire sweep is attenuated.
this has me completely scratching my head, it does seem to be intermittent some times too.
any help is much appreciated.

Regards,
Allan

Hi Alexandre,

Have a look at this link and you will find MCE v2.31 in the dropbox link in the thread. This is old software designed for Win XP and less.
I have not verified this and I am not able to assist you with knowledge. Read the steps to flash a bin to the card.
He refers to it as the Tech2 Memory Card Explorer but it is the Elan MCE program. The Tech2 is a GM Can bus Tool.

Best of luck. Let us know how you go.

Re: How to write a PCMCIA SRAM card?

OP has a RAM card so not an issue, but you are correct, very few laptops have the 12V programming supply (I have a Sharp sub-laptop that does) and some Linear Flash cards need it. Not all cards though and unless you have detailed data sheets for the card it's hard to tell. I've had same make, capacity and label cards that did and did not need 12V. Only the detailed part number was different.

Re: How to write a PCMCIA SRAM card?

I use MCE for both my tech2 and hp8920 linear flash cards. XP on an ancient laptop, the make and model escapes me right now but I can dig it out if necessary. I seem to recall some laptops don¡¯t have 12 volts available at the pcmcia socket and fail to work with the linear flash cards for this reason.?

Re: How to write a PCMCIA SRAM card?

Format the card in the 8285, then see if your PC will recognise it. If it does just copy the the RF Tools files (from /g/HP8924-Family-Spectrum-Analyzers/files/RF%20Tools%20&%20NA%20FM ) to it and give it a go. MCE uses the binary image (/g/HP8924-Family-Spectrum-Analyzers/files/1Separate%20miscellaneous%20files/11807Eopt100.bin )

Re: Firmware update for 8935 E6380A

Mmmmm....... Interesting thought. Unlikely in a FW upgrade as it would require calibration. But there is potential for a hack.
Success beyond intimate knowledge would hinge on whether the binary is encrypted and check summed. If its plain the you could search for band limit matches and alter to what you want.
Risky business, you could brick your unit.

8935; Any expanded frequency range?

Somewhat dissapointed it can't quite squeak into 12-1300 Ham band...

Re: Firmware update for 8935 E6380A

Seems like much ado about nothing. The cards are a generic global commercial product. Moreover, once the seller has sold the item they have no control over where it ends up. As you say, he has probably been cautioned over past activity and has decided on the ridiculous to cover himself not the buyer. Either way Dave will get his cards, as he should.

I am more interested in how the upgrade turns out for him. Please let us know Dave.

Craig.

How to write a PCMCIA SRAM card?

Greetings all!
I just got an E8285A and would like to write the SRAM card on that. Is there a way besides using Memory Card Explorer (which I don't have and seems to have vanished from the net)?

I got the RFTools package from the file area and I'd love to try it =)

Thanks!

Re: Firmware update for 8935 E6380A

The seller obviously sells some military and "high tech" items. The American Export (EAR) and arms trade (ITAR) regulations are pretty wide and hard to interpret. The penalties can be severe. Unless a formal "determination" has been issued, the seller has to determine if the restriction applies. If they get it wrong there is no defence. I have personally talked to two dealers who have been warned off for minor infractions and they no longer sell abroad. For example one determination (made some years ago so may have been changed) said that while a basic military helmet was not ITAR restricted, one with a mounting bracket for night vision goggles is. All C-130 Hercules spares are ITAR, including the L100 civilian version. This was because restricted countries were ordering parts for the L100 and fitting them to military aircraft.
I can't blame a ebay seller from just putting a blanket "no foreign sales" restriction even though I might not like it. Personally I've put limitations on items I knew for certain were controlled but have still had bidders from embargoed countries try to buy them. I'm in the UK but have had ITAR awareness training from work.

Thanks everyone for your help on this one. ?
?
After figuring out this issue I contacted the seller and determined that they don¡¯t do any international shipping. ?We have sorted that out now. Cards 10001, 10002 and 10005 are heading my direction via my US address that is not really that accessible in Covid Times. ?But they are a great mailbox place so they will forward them on.?
Just ups the price.?
Thank you very much for alerting me to this.?
Merry Christmas?

Re: Firmware update for 8935 E6380A

There's more of this that needs to be said.? Dave and I were engaged in a bit of direct email back and forth about an hour ago, and at that time I found this notice on the HP memory cards for sale:

This item is NOT FOR EXPORT.? U.S. SALES ONLY.
Diversion is subject to civil and criminal Penalties.

That could make some sense on certain advanced technology class instruments that HP makes, although not too much sense for anything related to these old RF test sets or anything else that old.

Here's the important part.? Just about all the 5,000 items this seller has is marked with the exact same red label warning (with the criminal part), including ordinary 20 gauge stranded hookup wire and plain old 8-32 stainless steel nuts!

So there's nothing special or legitimate about the warning on the HP gear.? The label is just slapped on everything from this seller.? It's part of his auction listing boilerplate.?

He only sells to US buyers, anyway; no explanation why.

Re: Firmware update for 8935 E6380A

Thanks George,
For some reason the vendor is listing them as not to be exported outside of US. ?
Which seems bizarre. ?
But the mystery is solved. Thanks?

Re: Firmware update for 8935 E6380A

Dave,

At 0200 UST Saturday, 9 PM EST Friday, I still see all seven of those cards as available from Ebay.

Maybe try checking again using search terms like? "HP memory update card."

The card numbers are 10001, 10005, and 10002.? One zero from each was left out before which was my doing, not Craig's.? Craig's post was modified a tiny bit before it was posted.
