Re: HP 8920A Firmware Upgrade Issue

Update...

First off, thanks Rick for those files. They match the files that I used to program the eproms.?

I removed the hardware down to the CPU, memory and CRT controller as suggested (but forgot to disconnect the Input module). Same non-recoverable error as before, with write protect ON or OFF and with full or partial SRAM boards. Messages included "battery backed ram initialized, STD ram not maintained", "cal checksum incorrect, reset to default" and finally "non-recoverable firmware error" as before. The LED error codes indicated serial bus communication failures for all assemblies listed in the table along with A6 Signal Source/Analyzer failure.?
So that's it for now unless I can get my hands on another CPU board to try. I will run 9.15 FW til then.?

Thanks for your help,
Greg

Hi Rick,

I used a BP Microsystems BP-1148 to program (6) TC574000D IC's. Perhaps those images are mislabeled. If you could email the files that would be great.?

Many thanks,?

Long story short... I think that you got it right.
I swapped some stuff around including a firmware board with the extra memory and everything is working now.
Thanks so much for the help!!

HP 8920A/B, 8921A LCD/VGA Out

Hello to the group,
I know the LCD conversion is nothing new for the 892x series. I recently, thanks to member "DCFluX" mentioning this, added external VGA out the back of my 8920B.
I wanted to share to others that if you want to use the 0.1" header on the LCD board and not wire directly to the terminals here's the part numbers for the connectors and pins.
I also cut the #2 ground pin and inserted a block in the female connector to add polarization of the connector to avoid "oops" in the future.

TE Connectivity 12-Pin Female Connector? p/n: 87456-7
TE Connectivity Female Pins p/n: 87667-3

I then cut a VGA panel mount cable made by Cables2Go p/n: 52096 and took the HP 8920B blank cover plate off the "Option Interface" on the rear of the 8920B and cut/filed/sanded a place to mount the VGA connector to so it looked factory.
The VGA cable barely fits through the LCD/CRT cable port.

I do need to find a native 640x480 monitor now to complete the setup.

The 8920B is by far my most favorite test equipment that I have ever used.

I managed to score a soft carry case for my 8920B for free from a friend, also renewed all the caps in the power supply, and new memory battery.
I posted in the files section the list of caps for the PS- I know there are many on here that have re-capped these I just wanted to capture it should it help someone down the road.
I did renew all of the electrolytic's the 8920B PS because unlike the IFR 500/1200/1500/A-7550 power supplies of which I have recapped many, getting the PCB off the barbed standoffs was not fun, nor was it fun attempting to, and chickening out of, removing the power switch rod - I ended up leaving it attached and securing it to the PCB with polyamide tape.
The new LCD/TFT display is fantastic, made this unit really enjoyable to use- waiting on parts to install a VGA feed out the back from the LCD board.

Re: HP 8935 Power Supply

Thank you Rick, much appreciated. While trying to analyze the circuit, I concluded that was part of the start circuitry and replaced it first up. Unfortunately it wasn't the problem.
I'll try the heat trick, I'd forgot about that, it might show something.
I'm guessing circuit diagrams are not available.
Cheers

Dave,

?? That "daughter" board is near the middle of the rear most power supply board. It's NOT the board with the (2) potentometers. rick

I have a HP 8935 that I’ve used for a while with no issues. Turned it on recently and it shows no signs of life - nothing.
I’ve done some preliminary checks - there is AC to the main board (so not GFI) / bridge rectifier, but after that the circuit is hard to follow.
Does anyone have a circuit diagram of the power supply? Or known common issues with this model?
I've replaced quite a few caps, removed and tested FETs, voltage regulators, transistors etc but haven't found anything faulty.
Thanks

Hi Dave,? Look for a 47uf/ 35V radial capacitor on a "daughter board" that is on the board closest to the rear of the 8935. That is usually the problem. A good test to see if that's the problem is to warm up the rear of the 8935 with a hair dryer and see if it will then come to life. That is a further indication that cap going bad. rick

Re: HP 8920A Firmware Upgrade Issue

Update...

14.14 FW still will not boot (non-recoverable firmware error) even with S1 in the non-protected position.
My eprom programmer, a BP1148, seems to have no problem converting Intel hex to binary.
I have provided checksums of the images in hopes that you guys can verify their validity using images that you use. This will tell me two things: That my programmer is handling the hex to binary conversion correctly and that the eprom labels are correct. Unlikely that's the problem because these images have been used before.?

The 8 bit checksums of the binary images are as follows
U18 - 2A010C1
U19 - 1F1AD0D
U20 - 2700853
U21 - 1F7BECF
U22 - 206E375
U23 - 1CFD80E

Again, the machine boots with 9.15 FW (passes self test) with the exception of a "cal file checksum error. File reset to default values" message. Any idea what could be causing that? It doesn't seem to matter whether write protect is on or off. Also, the cal EEPROM data has not changed from my initial backup copy. This message disappears when I reinstall the original 6.11 FW.

That's all for now. Thanks for your help.
