8920a Firmware/ memory upgrade

Hello, all.
I have an early 8920a sn 3211Axxxxx with version A.6.11 firmware and option 005 (memory upgrade) and would like to upgrade the firmware to A.14.14. I have the eproms (dip type) already programmed. However, the memory board?08920-60166?is missing two SRAM ICs U29 and U30 so apparently it wasn't a full 512k upgrade. Can I add the missing SRAM, install the new firmware and have a successful upgrade? Is it that simple or is there something I am missing??
?
Best regards,

I do not thin the 8922 can modulate the RF output, (maybe FM modulation) Am I correct?

I do have lots of HP manuals for this unit.

For sale UK 8920B

I'm downsizing my equipment collection and don't really need 3 service monitors. So I've decided to sell my 8920B.
It's in very good condition and has OPT055 so goes down to 400kHz.

Send me a private message if interested. I'd prefer collection, It's located in Cambridge, UK.

11807E Options 001 and 100 binary .bin anyone?

I have a freind trying to write a Flash card for me and apparently the native files won't work, I need a binary image. I found a binary image of option 100, but none for option 001 and I suspect I need a concatenated? (Is that right term?) binary of both to make one card. Has anyone got that laying about?

Re: 8920B and RFDIAGS2 error

This is common issue to the 892X series including the 8920A and 8921A.

If fitted with certain options they may require a jumper on the rear for the unit to be operational without the external adapters.

Not that uncommon on HP Agilent gear? ...often needs a jumper for the reference and LO signals.??

Used to see a lot of gear being sold as defective when the rear jumpers were missing and most likely the cause of the problems.

Re: 8920B and RFDIAGS2 error

As an FYI for anyone looking for the answer on this - Yes, it appears that if your 8920B comes with the option that works with an 83206A (or I would assume any of the other test sets), then W13 will actually be taken to the back of the unit.

I used one of the cables that connected those ports to the 83206A to connect the appropriate ports and my unit passed the RFDIAGS2 tests.

8920B and RFDIAGS2 error

Hi All,

Cleaned off the bench and took 83206A off the 8920B - Thought it would be a good idea to run the diagnostic programs that are on the system ROM - Unit passes power self-tests but when running RFDIAGS2 I'm getting errors during the Output section of the test program.

The first error is in the "Output Detector, Detector Caps" phase. The 4 tests check two caps, C419 & C418 both in and out of the circuit together and individually. I get the same result for every test indicating an actual Vdc of 0.038. The diagnostic suggests that the path is A25J55 to A25J56 - From poking around this seems to be W13, a semi-rigid short jumper.

The next set of errors is in the "Output Frequency Range, Loop Closed" phase. It shows a value across the frequency range of 0.038 to 0.041 and again suggests W13. Finally, there are errors in "Bandwidth Control" again pointing to W13.

From reading it seems that W13 is a bit of a known problem child but before opening the unit up and trying to gently clean it, I wanted to ask the group if this could be a false flag from removing the 83206A? Would they have removed that jumper in the expectation that the path would continue through the external 83206A?

Any comments, thoughts, or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

TonyG

Re: Recommended software for the 8920B?

7-zip has problems with older versions of the app.? I've seen it happen in winrar files too.? I'd recommend upgrading to the latest version and try again.? Guess how I know?? O:)

HP8935 IQ Calibration Unable to pass, prompt: input signal setup #file-notice

After maintenance, it can't run now. The input signal of ant port is too low to detect. These can only run after calibration. At present, I don't know how to solve them. Do you know,

Re: Recommended software for the 8920B?

8920A or B reads/writes either DOS or LIF depending on how the card is initialized (formatted).

The card tells the instrument what it is.? File naming may be important for compatibility.
It was pointed out earlier, that a old PCI connector could accept an epson card but the instrument
already does that so maybe there is a way to load it via rs232 without a intermediate cobble.
I'm sure HP wouldn't have told us how.

Found some 1mb Epson (Grid) cards on ebay from zizigulu.? He has a 97% rating so it was a gamble.
The cover was starting to lift near the battery but a couple of dots of contact cement fixed it.
Way more storage than I know what to do with.? May eat a battery quicker for being big.

Re: Recommended software for the 8920B?

I want to thank everyone for the help in getting it running for me - Really appreciate all the help that you guys provided.

Here is what I ended up doing (ignoring the faffing around that was also a key part of the experience):

  1. I used an old Thinkpad T20 that I've had since the late '90s (I think) - It has 2 PCMCIA slots on it
  2. Upgraded to Win98SE - I had just MS-DOS 5 installed on it as I was using it for some R&S software that needed an NI GPIB-323
  3. Previously I had purchased a flash memory card from eBay just for this - The card I bought was an IBM 2Mb Flash Card, part number 0934290 - I plugged it into the T20 and after the PCMCIA Card Services files were installed (with the requisite flashback to me filing a bug asking why this requires me to find my original CD again and it couldn't just be cached as part of the required files YMMV), the card was ready to go.
  4. Installed the MCE app that JB suggested - I needed to use low memory launch - It's basically a command-line option that you pass to the app - The app installed placed two shortcuts on the desktop and when the Low Memory Value one worked I didn't bother to look into it further.
  5. I grabbed the binary file for the 11807E from the files section here -?/g/HP8924-Family-Spectrum-Analyzers/files/1Separate%20miscellaneous%20files/11807Eopt100.bin
  6. Dragging and dropping this onto the MCE let the T20 write the image to the card
  7. Shutting down and transferring the card to the 8920B enabled me to use it there
  8. On the 8920B, hit the TESTS button and select CARD as the program location, find RF TOOLS in the list of apps and execute it - Warning, it took the better part of 2 ice ages for it to launch on the 8920B but I might just be impatient - It ended up ranging without problems.
I'd like to thank everyone again for the help.

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about what I did - happy to let you know what I experienced and save you some time if I can.

TonyG

Note my reply with zipped attachment was not meant to go to the group and the zip file is incomplete. If a moderator can remove it that would be good.

Re: Recommended software for the 8920B?

I have only managed to get the RF TOOLS card to work by copying an image of the card (.BIN file) or by loading into a 8920B and then copying back to a RAM card.

As far as I know the 8920B writes to cards in LIF format. Some, maybe all firmware versions can read/write DOS RAM cards. NONE can write to FLASH cards. Obviously Flash cards are preferable because RAM cards lose their data easily

I cannot source EPSON cards for the 8920A and don't have an A to test them in if I did. I do have an EPSON connector. Some avionic equipment used the same card format for databases. Unfortunately they had the cards well locked down for copying due to the cost of the data.

Re: Recommended software for the 8920B?

Actually Robert - Don't worry I tried the software JB pointed me to and it works so I think I'm good on that.

My question now is that it seems the process accepts only 1 file to be written to the flash card, any pointers on how to go about assembling the files from the the RFTools folder here in the group, into a binary that can be written to the card?

Thanks,
TonyG

I don't seem to be able to unzip it either using a couple of different unzippers.
