HP8920A upload program files?
OK, I can upload and download ASCII IBASIC files via terminal program to/from PC via rs232,
but what about .PRC, .LIB, .PGM files and "whatever" those screen setup files are? Can I just upload PGM as text and the rest are developed? The screen setup files capture as gibberish with some text, but when captured as hex from LIF or DOS initialized cards, they are different. Any pointers? Thanks, Jim |
Re: HP8924C Saved Settings Transfer
This morning, got out the old computer with the PCMCIA slot. Would not start up. Had to reset the BIOS, eventually found that it thought it had a SATA when it has an ATA HD. In the middle of this using reboot discs, the CD Drive would not open, Fixed that. Now the computer seems to work. Another day wasted due to ancient computer problems.. Not to mention my HP printer will not connect to my homegroup, even though it lists the router on its screen. (once in a while it connects momentarily) Go Think, That's another story. Wally

Re: HP8924C Saved Settings Transfer
?
Yes, that's covered in your 8924C User's Guide which is?08924-90038.pdf in our files section (search on "8924" to find it).
?
It's the section called "Saving and Recalling Instrument Setups" beginning at page 61. The idea is to save to a memory card (SRAM) and then use that card in the other monitor to clone the setup to it.??
?
Once the setup is resident in the second monitor the setup can be saved to "internal memory" so the memory card doesn't have to stay plugged in.
?
?

I wonder if there is a way to move saved settings from one monitor to another???

Re: E8285A - how to backup calibration data?
Did you try Jeff's cal data program yet?? I also have an 8285 but don't have the old laptop quite ready to run where the heavy HP is.
The laptop was in the RF lab, but it became inoperable on account of needing a second WIN XP activation.? No idea why that happened. |
Re: HP8924C Cal File Checksum Incorrect
Hi,
regarding the "Cal file checksum incorrect. File reset to default values." error message, the assembly level repair manual states: "This message occurs at powerup when downloading of calibration data is unsuccessful. It indicates that the calibration data is corrupt, and although the Test Set will function, measurements will be inaccurate. Calibration data is downloaded from a memory card when certain assemblies are replaced, or it is generated when the Periodic Calibration program is run. This message will not occur again at powerup unless another unsuccessful downloading occurs." I would assume that unless you have backups of the calibration data from all relevant assemblies, it will be difficult to restore the unit to full working order (i.e. make it operate within its accuracy specifications). I am not sure whether sending the unit to a calibration lab is a possible fix and whether it covers all lost calibration data. From my understanding, there are certain coefficients in the calibration data that are generated by the manufacturer of the respective module (e.g. spectrum analyzer). Regards, Oliver |
Re: 8924C Won't Power On
Thank you for the reassuring advice as well as the link that allowed me to follow it all the way down to a PDF. I think due to the age of this I'm better off in the long run replacing the entire PSU. My eyesight has been declining and I know I could replace a single cat. But my eyesight has me troubled these days. The analogy that someone made as far as not replacing the rings on just a bad cylinder of an engine but all of them seems to make more sense than trying to replace all the caps on an old PSU. If one's gone just from sitting doing nothing except being plugged in it's probably best to just replace the PSU. I didn't realize it had some kind of Stand By voltage either. I realize that when I turned it around and saw the green LED staring at me. Stand by voltage. Why the hell is it so slow to start up then? LOL. Thank you again. Re: 8924C Won't Power On
I'd say the same. It is a lot of work, you gotta buy QUALITY capacitors, patience, patience, patience. At least you can buy a revised, remanufactured power supply with full warranty from Amtronix. Here in Brazil better I do it right because there are no PSUs to buy.

I did mine in December, and it sometimes coughs up to start (google translator is our friend, you know...) 73 de PU2SEX Alexandre, GG66QM =) On 31/05/2021 20:08, zl1cvd wrote:

Re: 8924C Won't Power On
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýTake it from me, recap them all. Or you will be like me and digging back into that PSU in another year or so wishing you had. Plus, its not so hard to remove the glue. A good tug with pliers and it soon comes away. I've done 4x8924 & 3 E8285A power supplies now. No damage to any & only 1x E8285A power supply not working now - its the one where I didn't recap them all! Chris ZL1CVD On 31/05/2021 20:53, Robert G8RPI via

Re: 8924C Won't Power On
Yep, that one.
Mine did the same thing last year. See this thread /g/HP8924-Family-Spectrum-Analyzers/topic/8924c_psu_failure/76936558?p=,,,20,0,0,0::recentpostdate%2Fsticky,,,20,2,20,76936558 I'm not convinced about a complete re-cap on the 8924C PSU. It's very densely packed with components glued in. It's possible to cause more issues by trying to change them all. Robert G8RPI. |
Re: Program to retrieve HP8920 calibration data...
Oliver, I think you're referring to the software to effect the extraction of the cal data from your 8920. That's here in our file section in the "HP8920 Tools" folder: If anyone would like to see what actual cal data downloads have been offered so far?to Jeff, the software's author, just go back in this thread to June of 2020 and there are three sets of cal data posted as attachments.? Robert has already mentioned his data which is included in Jeff's software folder. Locating these files is made easy by the Groups.io files search function.? Another useful search that's available is for particular photos. Hank ______________________________________________
