Just purchased HP 3586B--EBAY

I waiting to get it, I 'm pretty excited, but also concerned it will need repair.
In the listing I note is the display has error code of? CE-1. The manual says,
"Operator error, Attempt made to Manualy change the FULL SCALE while in Auto Range"
So I hope that is not a real problem.
? I will be changing the WECO input connectors to BNC. I note the unit is 75 ohm, I'll be working with
50 ohms.Is it wise to put a 50 ohm to 75 ohm L pad internal when I install the BNC connector?
And then note, "all measurements are MINUS5.72 DB".
?What would I add/subtract if I just plugged a 50 source into the 75 ohm input?
??????????????????????? Thanks, Lamont
.

Lamont,

Download the manual, look at the matching network. You will see how easily you can make it selectable for 50 or 75 or whatever tweaks your tuner. There may be several illustrations for different available networks, depends on ordered options. I suggest you read the manual or you will be scratching your head why things do not work the way you think they should. Look at 3586C, that has clearly the 50 / 75 selectable diagram you may want to use, or not!

Hi Lamont

According to the HP 3586 user manual the B variant already has a BNC input that is switchable between 50 and 75 Ohms.

The A and B variants were teleco "specials" the C variant was the general use one, however it is quite possible that your B may not be as the manual and was customised for a specific client.

A by far larger problem with 3586's is the NiCad ram backup battery which leaks and contaminates/corrodes the PCB edge connector, this must be the first check that you do.

You might also consider picking up one or two WECO to BNC adapters for the unit.? It would save the effort of having to disassemble it and change over to BNC connectors.

If you use the search terms "Trompeter WECO" on eBy you will find several listings, some reasonably priced but make sure that you pick up the normal version for there is also a mini-WECO plug made as well.

According to the HP data sheet, the 75 ohm output connector with Option 001 mates with the WECO 358 connector.? And if I am not mistaken, a company named MilesTek (no affiliation) has the adapter for about $13 (see ).? They also sell the mini-WECO as well.

Without dragging my 3586 out of storage, I'm sorry that I can't offer a little more help.

Almost all of the connectors that you will find that are
made by Trompeter are not compatible with the WECO 358.

Be careful, the shield fits, but the center pin won't engage.

They were made for 75 ohm video patch panels, and the WECO
are 70 ohm.

HP specifically states on their spec sheet for the 3586 that the 75 ohm port mates with the WECO 358A plug.

The correct matching parts are a WECO 358A Plug to a WECO 477B Socket. The comment(s) about Trompeter Plugs is absolutely correct. I’m not sure if there is different part which is a direct equivalent for 358A

I have to check adapters called up in HP3586B Manual(s).

The RCA 50 ohm WECO type connector for broadcast patch panels has a .050" pin diameter.? The standard WECO 358A 75 ohm connector has a .090" diameter pin.? Both possess a .375" diameter barrel.? The mini-WECO (WECO 440) has a totally different barrel diameter (.298").? HP specifies a WECO 372A connector to fit the 124 ohm port.

It is worth checking to see if the 3506B has option 001.? If so, HP uses the 358A/75 ohm & 372A/124 ohm connectors.? The three units I have here all have option 001.? If it is a model with non-optioning (one of the more rare units from what I have found), the 75 ohm input uses the WECO 439/440A (mini-WECO), the 124 ohm input uses the WECO 443A, the 135 ohm input uses the WECO 431A and the 600 ohm input uses the WECO 310 (TRS plug).

And a word of caution on the 310 plug.? Although it looks like a standard 1/4" stereo plug, it is not.? Dimensions are different and the tip and ring are of a smaller diameter.? Pushing a standard stereo plug into the jack on the unit will most likely either distort the jack contacts or damage them requiring replacement of the jack..

I saw that 3586 on ebay. the connectors on the back labeled Oven output and external reference need to be connected to each other. There are articles on the internet on how to convert the inputs from 75 ohm impedance to 50 ohm impedance. Check the schematic on the 3586C which has a 50 ohm impedance input.

I suspect that the WECO 372A is made up of two WECO 358A plugs along-side each other ‘cos we always used a pair of WECO 477B sockets for 124 Ohm on the front panel. In fact the ones we used were supplied direct

from Western Electric for contract products ‘cos the genuine article is not available commercially (I think). For Options such as on the 3586B, I believe the connectors used would be “commercial equivalents” of the WECO products. Trompeter and ADC (Minneapolis?) are the two manufacturers which mainly come to mind.
