HP8920B power supply removal
Brian and Beth Miller
The power supply in my 8920 has failed and I want to try to repair it but I cannot figure out how to remove from the instrument. I have successfully removed all the screws which bind it to the chassis. It is now possible to jiggle it around about 0.25 inches in all directions, but it remains firmly trapped by surrounding modules and frame pieces. It's not clear how to proceed, I could try dissembling the instrument bit by bit until the power supply assembly is free but I would prefer to be told the proper sequence of disassembly to avoid unnecessary work (and risk of damage).
Any help is appreciated, Brian |
Hi Brian,
never worked on a 8920, but I found a manual which states on p89: Use the following sequence to remove the Power Supply:
1.Remove the Input assembly (see figure 8, "A23 RF Input Assembly," on page 77).
2.Pull the POWER switch shaft forward from the power supply, then pull it out back toward the rear of the Test Set.
3.Remove the screws and molex connector.
4.Slide the power supply out from the bottom of the Test Set. Good luck, Marc. |
Hi Brian I have worked on the 8920 series The plastic mains switch actuator "rod" is the key, if you try to remove the power supply without removing it first you will damage it or the power supply switch (unobtainable). The power supplies are SMPSU's, there are NO circuit diagrams available. If it is like the 8920A they are dual input AC an DC and a nightmare to repair. I have done two of them with difficulty,? 73 George G6HIG On Sunday, November 4, 2018 8:15 PM, marcschrdrs <ambcs@...> wrote: Hi Brian, never worked on a 8920, but I found a manual which states on p89: Use the following sequence to remove the Power Supply:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMarc, ? Thanks, removing the input assembly is onerous but at least I have a clear path to follow; I feel much more confident now. ? Brian ? Hi , the big problem of these power supply are the electrolytic capacitors of the primary and secondary
