Replacement battery for 8566A
The original battery pack was a 3 cell battery Ni-Cad @ 4.5v. Years ago I could purchase similar sized 1.5v Ni-Cad cells and rebuild the battery pack. At this point in time I would simply find a battery pack 5V and under, and wire it in to the to the same placement as the original. I have seen multiple 3 cell wireless phone battery packs that would fill the bill as a replacement. The original battery pack and holder is screwed down to the front sub-panel and attached to the RF motherboard via 2 pins. If you replace the jacks on the replacement with the ones from the the original case, then zip tie the new battery pack into the old position, and you are done. Do check the polarity.

It’s a standard HP calculator nicd pack as used in the HP45 type calculators. There are people selling rebuilt ones in the USA on Ebay. Not as easy in the UK!

开云体育Batteries plus may be able to weld you up a nicad pack. ?I would not use lithium and remember if you just use alkaline cells to put a diode in series with the batteries to prevent the charging system from damaging the batteryRegards, ? 开云体育The issue is the contacts as it is a drop in pack but I’ve rebuilt them by resoldering those to the weld tab if you’re quick nothing gets too hot at the battery!Adrian Sent from an I-thingy On 22 Mar 2019, at 06:28, Stephen Hanselman <kc4sw.io@...> wrote:

I just uploaded my modification to be used at your own risk. Batteries can explode if incorrectly charged. On Thu, Mar 21, 2019 at 11:35 PM <[email protected]> wrote: Hi all, |

This is the correct value for the HP 8566/68 A, I wouldn't confidently put in something like 4.5 V or even above before having a look at the schematics. Raymond |

Those are usually NiMH. They don't like being overcharged, much less than NiCd's.OTOH, low enough charge rates are OK. Since like-size NiMH cells generally have a (much) higher capacity, so permanently charging them in the HP 85668 A might be OK. I don't have the numbers at hand. Raymond |
Like I said, if you wish to retain the existing form and if you're in the USA for 8 bucks you could order a drop-in replacement NiCd pack on ebay.
Search on 'HP calculator battery' I got three shipped to the UK about 18 months ago, one for the 8566A and one each for my ancient HP calculators. I admit they don't hold the charge as well as a brand new HP pack did back in the day, (cheap cells?) but they aren't too bad. Plan B which also worked was: 1/ Open the existing plastic shell using scalpel along the welded seam at each end (some give in easier than others!) 2/ Cut/tear off the two contact strips off where they are welded to the old batteries and set aside. 3/ Taking a new 5xAA cell NiCd pack sold to the RC car racing community also on ebay, cut off one cell from each side leaving the welded tabs sticking out from the 3 cells you are keeping 4/ Fold the remains of those tabs such that they lie nicely with the contacts saved from step 2 and quickly solder them so stuff doesn't get too hot. 5/ Reassemble plastic case frame and drop the pack back in the 8566A's holder and clip the cover back. |

Yup, that's the one, not as nicely made as the HP original but it dropped straight in and is still running! I'm not using the 8566A as much as I was these days so I find I need to fire it up for a few hours each week to keep the battery topped up but it does the job. Modifying it so it charges in 'standby' has been on my list for a few years ... I'll get there one day....!

My battery is completely dead, even running it for a few hours won't charge it. Hope you share the modification if you ever get around to it. :o) Sean |
Well, the $8 replacement battery pack arrived today, so I opened the front panel and found....no battery. Not even the assembly that's supposed to hold the battery...or any wiring that might come from the battery contacts. Very strange indeed. Circled are where the battery assembly is supposed to screw in.

开云体育Well at least there’s no leakage.?What’s on the battery mount assembly? ?Can you just wire a battery to a connector? Peter On Mar 28, 2019, at 3:25 PM, [email protected] wrote:

Well at least there’s no leakage.?Peter, I can't find any wiring for it at all. The only reason I can think of this might happen is if this thing had had an 8566B upgrade kit installed. But I'm pretty sure it hasn't had that done. Sean |
开云体育I have the B which was apparently an A upgrade and can open it up and look at anything if that is helpful.?Peter On Mar 28, 2019, at 3:33 PM, [email protected] wrote:
