Anyone with a 3586B A80 board?

I g?o?t? ?r?i?p?p?e?d? ?o?f?f? picked up a 3586B at the Raleigh, NC hamfest this weekend, and the "gentleman" who sold it to me assured me it powered up with no problems, he and his buddy he was there with just checked it all yesterday to make sure there were no issues with it.? I took it home and before applying power, I knew I needed to check the A80 board for bad batteries.? The good thing is that there were no bad batteries on the board.? The bad thing is that this is because the A80 board is totally missing, and indeed the ones that used to be there in the past had leaked all over, and the motherboard has some damage as a result.? At the very least, I'll have to replace some connectors.? I sure hope I see this "gentleman" in the future.? And if he's in this group, all I can say is, you know who you are, and?I? ?h?o?p?e? ?m?a?g?g?o?t?s? ?e?a?t? ?y?o?u?r? ?t?o?n?g?u?e? ?f?r?o?m? ?y?o?u?r? ?l?y?i?n?g? ?m?o?u?t?h?.??God bless you.
Do any of you happen to have an extra A80 board for this that I could purchase reasonably to save me from having to make an equivalent???Oh, and it is also missing the entire A16 reference oscillator board - I think I have a spare for that, but I'm not 100% sure, so if you have just the board (I know I have a compatible oscillator module) I'd appreciate being able to purchase that as well.

Regards,
Matt

It's gotten so bad lately that I bring a power pack and inverter and give things a quick check while I'm still at these flea markets.

Interesting that when I mention I'm bringing an item to my car to check it out so many sellers all of a sudden remember problems. Amazing how much a 120 volt inverter can help memory!

Matt sorry to hear the issue and yes indeed lots of risk these days.
I was going to say homebrew a replacement. Without that Da$% leaky battery.
It shouldn't be to bad. I have had to do that for other HP gear like the 3335 sig gen. It's great when it comes back alive.?
Ok caution. If the leakage from the battery hit the motherboard?its seriously has to be cleaned up down to scraping the board. My experience?was with the actual regulator board and the?stuff conducts very well.
I thought I had it cleaned at least visually but had super strange results. Thats when I discovered trace to trace leakage was the issue.
Digging out the traces carefully cleared the?issue completely. The stuff even gets under resistors.
Good luck.

I sell a reproduction of the A80 board for these units, on a built-to-order basis.

Due to component cost increases since that post, the boards are now $140 for the assembled version. Blank boards are still $45. These are a built-to-order item, and ship ~ 2 weeks after receipt of order, depending on turnaround time from my PCB vendor and parts suppliers.

I have a spare A80 board 03586-66580 but I'm in the Netherlands. Shipping costs are +- USD 22 to the US. Board is free, it is from a unit I scrapped.

Thanks so very much to all who replied!? And Bob - thanks for having that option - I may still need to do that.? I was able to get a board on the way from Daniel Nelson - he found one that needs some work, but at least that's much more than what I have now.

This motherboard will definitely need some love, as it's pretty ate up with electrolyte in that edge where the A80 board lives.? The card-edge connector for the A80 is toast, and I wouldn't doubt if some of the other ones in that vicinity are bad as well.? I'll be removing the board and doing the standard scrub & soak in an acidic solution, followed by an alkaline bath, then rinsing with clean water.? I've had good luck cleaning things of this nature before by doing that, so hopefully this will work as well.

I'm sure I'll have some other questions along the way, but thank you all again who replied!

FYI - I got the mainboard off the unit last night.? For those who may have this issue in the future, it is possible to get this board off without removing all of the cards.? You do have to remove the front panel and the front panel frame member.
It doesn't look too bad - as in, I've seen worse.? I don't see any damaged traces, and that's a good thing too - this appears to be a 3-layer board.
It appears the worst part of the damage is to the holes in the board where the power supply electrolytic cans' vents peek through - and that's good because there isn't any power flowing through there.? I guess the electrolyte flowed out of the bottom in this area since it's the closest "hole" that didn't have something going through it, plugging it.

Time to order a connector...

Update:

Repair is coming along just fine.

I used a vinegar bath with a scrub brush in the kitchen sink, followed by a rinse, then some baking soda and water, then another rinse, then some Dawn dishwashing soap and a final rinse.? After that, I popped it into the oven at 170 degrees for a couple of hours.? It all turned out nicely.

I was wrong about it being a 3-layer board.? It's actually 4-layer.? It appears all the inside layers were protected well by the vias and the solder.? A continuity check revealed all to be as it should in the area.

The connector came out uneventfully with a manual piston-style solder-sucker (SOLDAPULLT-III - my favorite!) with about 20 minutes worth of work.

I noticed that this isn't the first connector to be replaced on this unit (red arrow).? It had problems in the past with the connector for the A11 Second LO board.

Waiting on the connector, and the power supply card from Daniel.

Glancing at the calibration procedure for this... it looks like I'll be busy that day!

Incidentally, does anyone have the schematics for all versions of the A80 board?? I've got what I thought was all the service manuals available for this, from Keysight's web site and from KO4BB's site, but in no place do I see the A80 board schematic.? All I could find is a blurb about a few different revisions of the board, and one major change to a different style in the later versions.

?

Forgot to add the pictures, in case it helps someone in the future.

Great job on the cleanup. That looks good.
No idea why but I thought the schematics were in the books.
