Managed to score a 3852A with 4.22 installed and a 256kB card. Should help figure out the way this stuff works.

Re: HP410C mains plug non IEC
Yes, you have to remove the rivets. I doubt even the fussiest would complain about them being replaced by screws.

Re: HP3400A common problem?
I've never had to repair it, but I have a 3400A that I really like as well. A friend who died left me a second one; I've not checked it out yet.

Re: HP3400A common problem?
Not only are they very nice instruments, they are (to me, anyway) enjoyable to work on - anything other than the thermocouple or meter movement can be repaired and it is easy to access the

Re: HP410C mains plug non IEC
I ordered a IEC-320 C6.
As Barry says it would be indeed perfect if it could fit in the original holes after removing the rivets. You'll know!

Re: HP3400A common problem?
Thanks Hal,
I'll start on the PS caps, but measure them all in-circuit first, and replace only bad ones. I think the PS board is plugged in, so should be easy to access.

Re: HP410C mains plug non IEC
Hi Robert,
I presume that in order to replace the PH163 with a C5/C6, one still has to remove the rivets, correct? If so, the rear panel isn't completely unmodified but the PH163 could be replaced

Re: HP410C mains plug non IEC
+1 on the C6 entry modules.? I use the following and it makes for a very easy upgrade - at least compared to nibbling out the hole to accommodate a standard IEC receptacle - without having to resort

Re: HP3400A common problem?
The symptoms you describe could be caused, as you point out, by several different things.? Personally I would lean towards capacitor issues as a "first check" item - I've worked on 12 of them so far

Re: HP410C mains plug non IEC
My solution on my 5245L was to solder and heat shrink wires directly to the connector. It will never pull out and is probably safer than a 60 uear old cord.
Still working fine.
