Re: Looking to connect with other 4396B owners
I have opened the 41951A impedance test kit a while ago to see how it was constructed. But there is really nothing fancy inside. Some inductors, a few caps...
I uploaded the pictures if anyone is interested. Of course these pictures are useless to draw a schematic from it. If better pictures required, I will open the box again. Doing so the first time was quite a hassle because the screws where glued in and extremely hard to loosen. |
Re: Replacement battery for 8566A
开云体育The issue is the contacts as it is a drop in pack but I’ve rebuilt them by resoldering those to the weld tab if you’re quick nothing gets too hot at the battery!Adrian Sent from an I-thingy On 22 Mar 2019, at 06:28, Stephen Hanselman <kc4sw.io@...> wrote:

Re: Signal Generator Comparison Chart ?
Just a note on the Gigatronics 1026 generators, when working they are pretty good generators - 0.05 mto 26GHz. Harmonics and spurs are almost nonexistent in these units. Flatness is on the order of 1 or 2dB across the entire range on a good unit, all bands are detector leveled. I probably have an e-copy of the service manuals somewhere. There are at least 3 versions of the service manuals over the decades that they were made. There are also some variations that go to 40GHz, I think they were model 1040. Gigatronics really doesn’t want to support them anymore and has dumped much of the documentation.
The RF chain encompasses 3 to 5 YIG oscillators and mixers for up/down conversions to get all of the band coverage. There are 7 modular RF assemblies screwed down to the chassis and connected with non-rigid coax, but all are preformed for fit. There are also at least 7 multi-pole coax switches. The coax plumbing is a real challenge. The power supplies are compact and not real easy to repair as the main supply is directly in front of the fan mounted in heat sinks. There are secondary supplies on circuit cards. The electrolytic caps are problems for leakage with age. There are 14 smallish circuit cards across the back of the unit that are the YIG drive circuitry for each of the YIGs, 2 or 3 are the modulation circuitry. Depending on options you can have AM, FM, and Pulse modulation. Expect to see these as US military surplus. Replacement YIGs can be purchased from MicroTek for about $2-4K each. I have probably repaired 30 or more of these units. Repairs to the hybrid microcircuits can be done by someone that is knowledgeable in SMT repairs, or National Test Equipment has done some hybrid microcircuit repairs for me in these units. If you go after this unit and plan to service it yourself then plan to purchase 1 working unit and 1 or 2 parts units. About 60% of the repairs I did were power supply or YIG drive circuitry, the remainder involved the hybrid circuits and SMT repairs mostly pin diode switch replacement due to opens or leakage. I would estimate there are more than 60 SMT RF/uWave pin diode switches in the hybrid circuits. If you have to start replacing hybrids, YIGs, coax switches, and attenuators (Gigatronics, HP, or Wilton branded - all were used at different times and are all of similar construction 0-90dB, 10dB step and 0-12dB, 1dB step), then repairs will get expensive fast. Full alignment is only 2-3 hrs. I checked on eBay(USA), “working” units seem to be about $2-4KUSD each. Non working parts units are about $500USD. There are also service manuals available. If you need more info about the Gig 1026 or GT9000 contact me. Don Bitters |

You can get the same performance for 10% or less of the price. That's pretty cool in my book. That is awesome definitely.? Reminds me of a great presentation of an application of the ADF4355.? ? I'll have to look into what the ADF4371 upgrade modularized system looks like sometime... with mixing and harmonics filtering... seems like wow!? Way cool!? |
Re: Replacement battery for 8566A
It’s a standard HP calculator nicd pack as used in the HP45 type calculators. There are people selling rebuilt ones in the USA on Ebay. Not as easy in the UK!

Re: Replacement battery for 8566A
The original battery pack was a 3 cell battery Ni-Cad @ 4.5v. Years ago I could purchase similar sized 1.5v Ni-Cad cells and rebuild the battery pack. At this point in time I would simply find a battery pack 5V and under, and wire it in to the to the same placement as the original. I have seen multiple 3 cell wireless phone battery packs that would fill the bill as a replacement. The original battery pack and holder is screwed down to the front sub-panel and attached to the RF motherboard via 2 pins. If you replace the jacks on the replacement with the ones from the the original case, then zip tie the new battery pack into the old position, and you are done. Do check the polarity.

New phase lock board for 8753ES - qualitative first test
Today I received a new A11 phase lock board for my misbehaving 8753ES (thank you Pete M!).
A lot of measurements will follow as I have lab time, but I thought I'd run a simple "plug it in and hold ears" test. Test 48 now passes.? The 1 V/GHz waveform test on the analog bus has the same shape as before, but the starting voltage is below 3.5 volts instead of 3.6 as in the original board. I still have some intermittent lock issues below 10 MHz but this is major progress. I have a lot to do, including Root Cause Analysis of the failure of the original phase lock board.? Perhaps the precision 6.2 volt reference zener has gone out of tolerance, it would only need to be a few percent off.? I will see. What this means is that when the troubleshooting guide says the waveform should be as they show, it means literally in this case.? A waveform starting at 3.6 instead of 3.5 volts may cause failure. Much more to follow! Peter |

Signal generators
FWIW I bought an 8648C w/ opt 1E5 for under $1k delivered. Very nice clean instrument which should meet most or all of my needs.
I also received an email from AD today which might be relevant. They have a new part in volume production, the ADF4371. I'm sure there is a significant amount of programming required to turn this into a bench instrument. But the eval board set is under $1K and the specs are *very* impressive. It's clearly worth a close look if you want to go above 4 GHz. I have been stunned at what you can buy now in the form of an OEM eval board. If you require a broad range of capability, a commercial instrument is generally a better choice. But if you need to do a narrow range of tasks and are competent writing software You can get the same performance for 10% or less of the price. That's pretty cool in my book. Reg |
Re: Looking to connect with other 4396B owners
开云体育Hello, well, I am now semi-retired - maybe, if I find another opportunity when some surplus store closes, I will snipe it.
Until then, I can darkly remember that the manual for the 41951A
contains a very blurry shot. Maybe this can help you...in
principle, I am all game to help out.

Re: NVRAM 28-Pin Encapsulated Package DS1230Y and 6811B
The DS1230Y utilizes an encapsulated internal battery.? The battery is disconnected until external power is applied breaking the "freshness seal" and connecting the battery to the RAM.? So with a new device you are dealing with battery shelf life until it is powered up.? And I assume that nearly all if not all device programmers will supply power to break the seal and allow you to program it and remove it from the socket without losing the newly programmed contents.
Good reading: Some of the above data reflect older dates. I see that Digi-Key still handles large quantities of the DS1230Y: As well as does Mouser: And others out there. Greg |
