Re: the GPIB options, thanks Steve for letting me know about the KISS-488 solution.? I'm still considering my options.? Part of the problem is that the software landscape is a mess.? For many things you need VISA support, which is kind of stupid for what is, in essence, little more than a glorified serial port.? (Before someone objects, yes, I know GPIB is much more than that at the physical layer, but once you are addressing a single instrument, it's just a pipe.? So the cut-out-the-fluff-and-give-me-a-channel solutions, like the Prologix, are quite appealing.) Another GPIB question which probably deserves its own number, 4) Does anyone know if the GPIB commands in VNA mode are compatible with the 8753?? There are some nice tools out there which support, e.g., grabbing Touchstone S-param files from the 8753, and it would be nice to use those on the 4396B too. |

Replacing the battery (once you have the CPU board out) takes about 30 seconds.? Depending upon the instrument however, it could take a while to get to the battery.? In the case of the PNA, there are probably 2-3 dozen screws to remove. Labor is expensive.?
While the PNA uses the CR2335 battery, the very common CR2032 will also work but will probably only last about 75% of the lifetime of the 2335 which is about 10-12 years. |

The 2000 Agilent catalog entry for this series is totally silent on the display type, as is the product data sheet.??? Their silence leads me to suspect that it's a CRT and that they're just too ashamed to admit that they cut corners on features.? However, if you look at the photo on the first page of the data sheet it sure looks like it's an LCD.? (Note the lack of a CRT bezel.) 73..... Frank / WA3NHK |

There's a note in the file saying " Apparently the new memory board has a lithium battery installed which it says is good for a few years. It might be an idea for anyone with a B version to check this battery. I would appreciate any info on it."I found some pictures on Kerry Wong's site:?, including a nice picture of the processor board. I'll have to check mine out now, see how the battery's doing.

My experience with a HP 70900A LO and a similar range YIG (ie, not correct part number) from a signal? generator of the same era was that I had to play with the resistor divider (DC) network to get it into range? so the diagnostic software could change the control word.? The YIG had the "plumbing" pointing in a? different direction (straight out the side)? so the RF shield could never be installed, but it worked. ? The manual said (roughly) at x volts you should have y to z Ghz out, if not change the resistors... It took two years to find all the HP 9000 pieces to load the diagnostic software.? Doing calibration of the? HP 70000 units requires so many obscure and expensive HP pieces of test equipment I gave up collecting them. Jim

Today I received a new A11 phase lock board for my misbehaving 8753ES (thank you Pete M!). A lot of measurements will follow as I have lab time, but I thought I'd run a simple "plug it in and hold ears" test. Test 48 now passes.? The 1 V/GHz waveform test on the analog bus has the same shape as before, but the starting voltage is below 3.5 volts instead of 3.6 as in the original board. I still have some intermittent lock issues below 10 MHz but this is major progress. I have a lot to do, including Root Cause Analysis of the failure of the original phase lock board.? Perhaps the precision 6.2 volt reference zener has gone out of tolerance, it would only need to be a few percent off.? I will see. What this means is that when the troubleshooting guide says the waveform should be as they show, it means literally in this case.? A waveform starting at 3.6 instead of 3.5 volts may cause failure. My initial awareness of the AD eval boards was through a QEX feature article about a 16 bit 100 MHz BW direct sampling SDR built using an AD eval board and a Zed board for ~$1K BoM.
I signed up to get ADs email PR releases and have been blown away by what they are making. Someone on EEVblog did an extensive evaluation of a Chinese board with a very nice AD part. Unfortunately, I don't recall the part. But the conclusion was the board was crap. I am hoping someone will do some OSHW designs so one is not at the mercy of the Chinese. A set of Gerbers would be fantastic. Take a look at this part: Owon is using it in the XDS2102A which is available on Amazon for $400 delivered. The aesthetics and UI are terrible, but it will collect 20 Mpts of 12 bit data at 500 MSa/s. The part is $80 in 100+ and $111 in singles. I'm working on developing a FOSS DSO FW stack for Zynq and Cyclone V parts. I have *no* FPGA experience and it is quite different from DSP on a general purpose CPU. So lots to learn before it's complete. I just started reading "VLSI DSP Systems" by K.K. Parhi. The EE lexicon is very different from the geophysical lexicon, but except for minor notational differences the math is familiar. My primary concern is word length effects. In seismic we just switch to double precision if word length is an issue. Because memory BW is critical to seismic DSP you are forced to deal with the CPU at register transfer level to get good performance. So my main concern about doing the work is the quality of Vivado and Quartus. I have lots of scars from $100K/seat exploration software. A bit off topic, but we are all T&M junkies around here. |

Don¡¯t get Keysight to replace the battery. I asked them to change a battery that I was told verbally would be free. Then I received a quote for over ?300 ($500) to replace the battery. After some discussions they agreed to do it for ?99, which still seemed a bit steep, but I accepted. Dave.
