I'm just doing this for (mostly) fun, so packaging wasn't a concern.? It'll be used for occasional testing and perhaps drift measurements.? The reason they're often referred to as "Centronics" style

Probably because Centronics (and other printer manufacturers emulating their interface) used the 36-pin micro ribbon connector with bail latches back in the day for parallel printer ports. Western
