Re: RF Voltmeter?
The Boonton 93 is a True RMS Voltmeter, usable to 20 MHz. Maybe he meant the model 92?

Again, this could be related to open resistors in the horizontal deflection amplifier output stage. Specifically I would check R238, R239, and R275. These are the component references from the 8558B Operation and Service Manual (not the military version). The most common failure that I have encountered is R238 and/or R275 either open, or waaaaay off from the correct value (12.1K ohms). I used the calibrator sockets on the left side of the screen with 1 piece of wire in the negative and 1 piece of wire in the 10v socket and tested with the upper right hand probe input. Nothing yet. Then I tried the same hookup with the lower left probe and got two dots, one about two grid lines above the other. They are not moving. So that would suggest that the transistors are at fault, correct? Best Regards, Andrew ------------------------------------------- On Wed, 10/11/17, 'Paul Bicknell' paul@... You seam to be going in circles as you say I don't have a signal generator I posted text below on Sunday 8 oct Basically you do have a signal generator on the scope it is called the calibrator and if working produces a 10 volt square wave From you posting to date it appears the vertical amps are working But you say the horizontal control has no effect if so then the text below will help narrow down the fault ? There are a number of different plug ins so it might help if you posted the plug in numbers there should be one for the left vertical and one for the right time base we can explain about x time base triggering after you have proved the simple test below ? Hi re fixing 180 from memory Before removing the transistors a simple test Have you tested all the power supply rails on the pcb for the main frame for this test I would remove the plugging just in case they are causing any problems ? ? Display switch on right hand side 3rd one down turn it clock wise this puts the X amplifier into external with the intensity turned up you should have a spot turning the pot fully clock wise gives maximum sensitivity ?( right hand side 2rd one down magnifier should be set to 1 ) now connect a signal into the external ?BNC input below ?I just held a length of wire and put into the bnc socket ?you should see a horizontal line if not it is probably the drive transistors if you have movement connect the BNC input below ?to the calibration terminal you should see 2 dots one on left one on right if one hasten moved then it is that pare of transistors that has a fault ? this was my first HP scope to repair ?Paul B ? Subject: RE: [hp_agilent_equipment] HP AN/USM 281A Oscilliscope needs repair ( San Antonio TX ) ? ? Thanks for the help. What can I use for a signal? I don't have a signal generator. I tried testing it with a 3v 800ma wall wart using the EXT INPUT and didn't get a dot or anything. I tried using a 1.5v battery on the lower left input probe and, while holding the test button down I could see the dot jump up and down 1.5 square up each time I contacted the battery terminal. I can't get a dot to appear without holding the test button, so I feel like the knobs and switches probably aren't adjusted correctly. It worked the same way with the lower left INPUT when I tried the wall wart. The dot jumped up 3 squares, but only when holding the test beam button. Do you think I'm doing the test correctly, or are there other switches and knobs I need to try different settings with? Thank again! I have a fluke digital multimeter, a weller soldering station, and not much else. I'm slowly building up what I can when I have a specific need or find a good deal. I bought a set of probes for it off ebay There's no rush for me to fix it, so I can take the next 10 years if need be. Should I de-solder the transistors for testing? I heard that with very high voltages, the thickness of the gloves are what's important. That's why lineman's gloves and spark plug boots are so thick. I have a thick pair of rubber gloves that I'll probably be wearing for safety after leaving it unplugged for a while. I also need to make a high resistance capacitor discharge tool. I believe I have some high capacity resistors I've salvaged from some equipment. Thanks for the tips. Any further help is appreciated. Date: Sunday, October 8, 2017, 11:30 AM ? What test gear do you have? That will help people advise you. Did it come with a probe? The manual suggests approaches appropriate to a commercial environment where labor is expensive and parts are readily obtained. In your case labor is actually what you're after. Except you'll call it "experience" after you're done. Being able to say you have repaired a 100 MHz analog scope is non-trivial. That's a good scope, though old age will make it a bit cranky. It will serve you well even when you get newer gear. You can make a limited test of the transistors by measuring the forward resistance of the B-E and B-C junctions with an ohmmeter. The B-C resistance will be smaller than the B-E resistance because the larger area of the collector trumps the higher doping level of the emitter. Use the highest resistance ranges. You may encounter problems with DMMs that don't supply sufficient voltage to turn on the transistor. I learned this trick using an analog VOM. It doesn't work with the Harbor Freight cheapy DMMs. If you've got one of the Harbor Freight DMMs that they give away, measure hFE with it. That should suffice for testing the two transistors, But beware of the crappy transistor sockets, You should probably solder some leads with grabbers or alligator clips. I just tried two red ones. One worked, the other didn't, but both were intermittent. An old yellow HF DMM had a better socket and worked just fine (once I plugged it in correctly ;-) Connect to the probe compensation signal for testing. Make sure you know where the high voltages are and stay away from them. I've heard it's rather painful at best and lethal at worst. If you do need to work near it, keep your left hand in your pocket and wear rubber sole shoes. HF nitrile gloves might not be a bad idea, though I don't know how good they'd be. Not quite sure what is recommended for southpaws. Be aware that the HV capacitors and the CRT can hold a charge for quite a while. Before you EVER touch anything in the HV section, ground it with a screwdriver first with the unit unplugged. Whenever you get tired or confused, stop. It took me over a week to fix the horizontal section in my Dumont working a couple of hours each evening. Most important.... Have Fun! The Leo Bodnar pulser output level is adjustable but at outputs higher than some 1 v P-P the rise/fall times increase. I reported the ~0.95 v P-P as what was reported on the datasheet for *my* pulser. Ok, per Leo's August 7, 2017 post, the output device is a Maxim MAX3949. Mine is marked, "AJK BAA." Does anyone know the origin or significance of that marking? Per Leo's August 5, 2017 post, the pulser fastest rise time occurs when the output level is set to 820 mv and the scope reports 976 mvpp. That is consistent with what is reported for my pulser on the supplied test datasheet. Why would you want to set the output level higher than that at which the risetime is fastest? ~ 1 vpp seems enough. Larry On 10/11/2017 8:29 AM, David DiGiacomo telists@... more 89441A: remote sessions
For those of us on UNIX systems (including Linux), a quick and easy
way to remotely activate an X11 session from a workstation is: echo "SYST:COMM:LAN:XWIN:STAT ON" | nc vsa 23 > /dev/null On my desktop system, I have that set up as an alias called "vsa", using this line in my .bashrc file: alias vsa="echo 'SYST:COMM:LAN:XWIN:STAT ON' | nc vsa 23 > /dev/null" In this case, "vsa" appearing after "nc" is the hostname of my 89441A on my network. Those less civilized could put an IP address there. "23" is the port number for telnet, which is where the 89441A listens for network connections to execute SCPI commands. This uses the netcat program (nc), which comes with, or is at least available for, just about every UNIX implementation for the past twenty years or so. Note that this activates an X11 session to the target host configured in the 89441A's network configuration, which is not necessarily the system from which you execute the command. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA |
Re: help hp5300a / 5303a manual service
As you probably know already, the 5300A manual is readily available online but the 5303A does not appear to be. However, in November 2015 someone on EEVblog said that Dave of Artek Manuals had made a scan of it for him. It won't be free, but you can buy a copy of the scan from Dave. (He is a ham, NR1DX.)
He does excellent work and has a large number of manual scans available for HP/Agilent, Tektronix and others. (I believe he only does things that are no longer supported by their manufacturers.) His web site is artekmanuals.com. Quoting from the home page, "High quality, digital copies of manuals for obsolete test equipment. Out of date and hard to find technical manuals are our specialty." If you need some old manual and can't find it online he may have a scan of it. The prices are reasonable and the quality of the scans is good. (Or as good as they can be, depending on the condition of the original paper copies!) Disclaimer--I have no interest or stake in his business; just a satisfied customer. |

The Leo Bodnar pulser output level is adjustable but at outputs higher than some 1 v P-P the rise/fall times increase. I reported the ~0.95 v P-P as what was reported on the datasheet for *my* pulser.

开云体育Hi Dave, ? Wow! Good news! I was so curious that I verified wich type of memory is used on USG board : RAM chip was MT4C4001JDJ-6? (FPM memory type). Here, I had an old 72 pin memory SIMM of 16Meg EDO RAM Nanya NT511740B5J-60. Same speed but FPM vs EDO memory type. After reading several documents, I took a chance and…lucky man, every thing was OK, UTH option was automatically detected. I tested option w-cdma without any problem (who need UTH to works properly). Maybe it's too soon to know if the long term stability will be OK, but my 89441A was still OK after 4 hours of utilisation and a few power up. ? Thanks Dave ? Re: HP AN/USM 281A Oscilliscope needs repair (San Antonio TX)

Re: Schematics for HP 8558B SA
Thanks for the quick replies. Today I did find a complete military version of the HP 8558B manual with schematics. I'll start off with this and begin work on the SA, first checking and securing the rotary switch contacts that are a known problem on these units. This unit has some functionality, but has poor sensitivity and drifts badly. Once I know what version PCB's this unit has I can order manuals to match. As Dave from Artek says, it is helpful to know the serial number of the unit. What you most likely want is the "Operation and Service Manual" for this unit. The part number for the manual is 08558-90102. Keysight probably still has this posted on their website as that is where I got mine, but it is not perfect and there are a few schematic pages that are not scanned completely/properly. If Dave at Artek has this manual, I would consider ordering it from him - Dave's manuals are, well, pretty much perfect. Is there a specific issue you are having with your 8558B? I have several of them in service and might be able to assist you with debug and replacement parts (other than wafer-switch rotors). Ken
