Re: Wanted: HP Laserjet 4

Have parts and toner. Just like having several of one piece of test gear. Swap parts, keep it running. As others have concurred, commercial equipment used in a home business lasts and lasts and lasts. Cheep to run and service.

LJ4's have gone sky high on the bay. 200$+! Most have 200k+ page count. Not willing to take a risk for that price.

Took Dave's advice. Bought an 8150DN, low page count. (26k) Seeing these units for sale with 1M+ imprints is common.

My choice was based on what would be supported in 10 years. LJ4's are 20 years old now. Nothing wrong with age. Parts are becoming difficult to find at a reasonable price, however.

Still have a rehabbed LJ4 (new fuser and total consumable parts PM) with all the extra parts and toner. This one cost 60$ with 5 new OEM toner cartridges. That's a metric ton of printing.

It's in a storage trailer. Due to the new abode, I'll see that stuff shortly before the snow flies. No use to me now.

Compare the cost (including consumables) of a rehabbed commercial printer with a wally world special or one aimed at small offices, (assuming that you're capable and willing to do the work yourself ), makes these an affordable alternative.

Re: 141T reference replacement..a cure??

?
Working on another fault in this supply..... an idea surfaced that might cure this problem.
?
Neon tubes run in the dark eventually become difficult to strike due to the "shortage" of ions and free electrons to start the avalache process. Tubes protecting sub cable amps had radioactive components to ensure there were always a few electrons floating around. It is possible to "cure" lazy neons by leaving them on a windowsill in the sunshine for a few days. I have not done this and am not sure how long the cure lasts, BUT........and this is just an idea, I have not tried it !.
?
It should be reasonably straightforward to connect a UV LED in the unit close to the neon to ensure that there are always a few electrons around. I suppose it might not work too well if the unit was not powered up very often (Who can afford the bench space for a 141T frame and not use it regularly ?? :-))? ) It may save a few fuse blowings......these only seemed to happen as the units got older.?It might be easier that lifting the PCB to do a "proper" repair. It?is possible to lift the pcb?without disconnecting all the red traced white wires to the tags but it is difficult, and possibly risks damage. I have done it once.

I don`t think its a NE2 used as the voltage reference in the 141T psu pcb, I think its a genuine 82 volt reference tube with good TC. Its a pity they didn`t include a little speck of radium or similar to ensure that the gas remains ionised to some extent, thus overcomming the problem of rising striking voltage as the tube ages. This is what causes the crobar SCR, downstream to mysteriously blow fuses, just before the gas tube strikes. Later versions of this PCB used a similar PCB layout, but a low voltage Zener reference diode. You might find this later circuit of interest. Re: Getting the most amplitude stable CW signal from the HP8350B/83592B

As a acquisition delayed followup, I got the 8472B detector from eBay (perfect) and used it with the HP83592B sweeper plugin in CW mode. With some tinkering of the leveling feedback pot, I achieved +- 1 dB leveling over 0.01 to 20 GHz. This was twice as good as the Internal Leveling over the same 4 bands, but not nearly good enough to calibrate some spectrum analyzers without an axure way to measure the output power to about +-~ 0.1 dB.

That is how I "discovered" the wonderful works of the Agilent/Keysight USB Power Sensors and 2 software options (N1918A and BenchVue) to read and control them. Boy, am I earning eBay $$!

I am sure that will lead to more posts after I get in a dozen hours or so of learning about them.

Anyone who wants a copy of the manual, let me know. It's 23 Mb. QC'd complete

Did the A4 scans here and had the wide pages done at the local vendor.

I checked, Keysight maintains the Agilent ftp upload site (customer
provided documentation for obsolete products). Sent an email to the
caretaker and it bounced.

Anyone know if these docs will make their way out to the catalog? I.E.
continue tacit support for legacy products? Do want this to make it's
way out to the community. In short, it's the command set for the input
amplifers.

A+ for all the input. If I can't get a low page count LJ 4 or a small stack of them (refurb one plus parts), a newer one, I.E. 8150DN is probably the answer. There is one on the place of all things, low page count. A drive, though. Too many items ruined by common carriers. I try to pick up anything of weight that has some intrinsic value.

Calling the cops on the real estate droid wouldn't do much. OTOH, calling the broker (her boss) sounds like a solution. He's going to lose the big commission.

All the HP test gear made it through the move. I should be grateful.

Don't know anything about page count. The printer I have offered you free has been refurbished by a professional service--Stafford Associates--and it works fine.

One thing you might look at while considering color printers: is it telling on me?
Modern color printers put a pattern of yellow dots on the printed page as mandated
by the government.?? These dots encode things like the printer model, serial number,
and IP address.?? Older printers do not do this.?? Here is a list of printers that do and
do not put these tracking dots on the page.

I had an 8550dn for? a good while, but the toners went up? up up in price so I figured
it was in obsolete mode.? Now I use a 4700n color with good results.

I had a nice 5si, but the plastic frame doing the engage and latch
of print drawers cracked on two of them and I sent them to the crusher.

4050tn is OK, but not nearly as robust as the 5si, (until the plastic cracking death happened) So sad.
