Re: OT: Datron or Wavetek Manuals

Hi Dave,

A good number of years ago I acquired an older, used, Wavetek calibrator. ?I don’t remember the model number off hand, but it didn’t come with a manual.

I tried all the normal channels to find a manual and had absolutely no luck. ?I even called the factory and they were unable to help.

Out of final frustration I wrote the president of Wavetek a letter explaining that it was a shame to scrap such a nice piece of gear simply because I can’t find a manual and therefore can’t repair the unit.

He sent me a manual.

I assume you have checked the offerings on eBay.

Dave at ?lists the operating and programming manual. ?Apparently it is not a service manual and it does not include schematics.

Best of luck!

Regards,

Ken

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a complete set of User and Service Manuals for the
Datron/Wavetek 4808 calibrator.

In addition to the basic calibrator I also want manuals for Option 60 (aka
Datron 4600 Transconductance Amplifier) and Option 70 which is the
10Hz-30MHz Wideband Source

Ideally would like paper manuals but failing that I can manage with PDFs.

Aside to Dave H. - I notice that you have a PDF of the User manual for the
basic calibrator available - does it contain anything useful about either
the 4600 or Option 70 and is it complete (including Chapters 7 and 8)?

Thanks

Re: 8595E suddenly faulty

As to frequency range issue on your other S/A. If you have a signal generator or other source use something like a mini-circuits mixer and look at the difference frequency

Alternatively get one of the cavity type frequncy meters and a crystal detector

Im assuming you dont have a microwave counter

HP 8745ES

I have a problem with this unit. I have not used it for some time now but it was working fin then. But now when I switch the unit. the trace is not good and has large parts in it where it win not on the screen at all When I look at the R channel that's the same as the A/R channel. It looks like big steppes on the trace and these steps get longer as it sweeps fro 300KHz to 3GHz.

I have not seen anything like this fault.

Can anyone give me a clue ?

I have measured the supply rails and they seem to be fine and stable.

PAI associates.

These are their part number:

23-41 5747
70 Duro Black Buna N
There would be a choice of material but these seem to be what was needed. You have to ask them for a quote and the unit price comes down significantly when you buy several hundred. Then they insist on shipping UPS when they would fit in an envelope...

I think I got 800 in the end and most extras went to the -hp- group at around $10 for 50.

Re: 8595E suddenly faulty

Hi Adri,

In the 8594E, I can check the power supply voltages on the A16 boards, there
is 4 test points for 5v, +12v, +15v and -15v. May be it is the same with
your SA?

thanks Scott and thanks Hermann for your advice
yes I got the service manual and I'm trying to collect the info for the
troubleshooting

Searching the Web I found a very limited number of faulty YTO and
considering that it was mounted on the whole 858xfamily I was expecting much
more occurrences (there must be a huge number of them out there)

Nevertheless I agree it is one of the possible culprits and I'm thinking
about how to check its output as my only other S.A. goes only to 1.8Ghz
(this YTO , part nr5086-7903, starts from 3.07GHz)

Anyway I'm also hoping for a hint about a way to check the power supply
voltages without pulling it out

thanks

For all of you with the 859X series portable spectrum analyzers, here is some information that may be useful. Earlier versions of the analyzers used a power supply which was designed and made outside of HP. After a few years, failures started surfacing and HP (re)designed the supply in-house. The later supplies are therefore a HP design and those are the ones for which a schematic is often available. Those schematics will have the HP logo, etc. in the bottom right corner.

Hi all,

Thanks for your help. I've just found a sch witch seems quite similar to
what I have on the boards in this thread:

So I can investigate a bit. The fuse didn't blown and no smoke!

Will tell you more if I found something!

Hi Roland

I have repaired several of these PSU and there is no SCH for it but if you
have the SCH for the 8560E series PSU you will find a lot similar.

The main error I have found is the switching FET’s and the corresponding
small resistors, if my fussy memory is correct there are a 220 ohm and a 10
ohm leaded resistor to each FET check these.

The low voltage board has come in 3 different versions where the latest is
SMT but the design is the same but I have not yet repaired any of these yet
so concentrate on the HV switching and the capacitors here as well.

I hope this can help you a bit on the way, I have a handwritten SCH for a
8593A which also gives an idea of the built for the E series if you would
like this let me know.

Hi all,

I am trying to repair a 8594E spectrum analyser for a friend. The power
supply is faulty, none of the output voltages are ok, all leds on the ps are
off.

This is the 5062-8229 model, made in USA in the 90's. Three boards:
switching regulator 60024, output regulator 60025 and command 60026.

I have read that no schematics are available, is that still true? No visible
default, testing diodes, transistors, resistors, chemicals caps, didn't find
the problem.

I'm wandering if anyone have a faulty ps on a shelf, that may be I could use
to repair mine, two bads = one good, hi!

Open to any idea! Thanks for reading,
Roland F8CHK

Is there anybody did repair the probe for HP 4815A ?

Did anyone had measure the resistance between pins of the probe plug?

I did but , the reading had big different from the manual page 5-13 ?

I am using a HP412 to measure the DC resistance !

Any advise ?

Re: 8594E power supply

If the fuse isn't blown, some of the small 1-10 uf caps associated with soft start near the control IC may be bad.? You also may need to replace some of the caps on the output side of the supply.? A good ESR meter is useful along with a "octopus" or Huntron Tracker type unit that shows characteristic curves in circuit.? Use good caps sourced from a known non-counterfeit vendor...

When servicing power supplies for the Heath/Zenith computers (1980's) we only occasionally had schematics.? We called the fuse the module replacement indicator due to the fact it took 4x longer to rebuild one that failed with magic smoke release...
