A+ for all the input. If I can't get a low page count LJ 4 or a small stack of them (refurb one plus parts), a newer one, I.E. 8150DN is probably the answer. There is one on the place of all things, low page count. A drive, though. Too many items ruined by common carriers. I try to pick up anything of weight that has some intrinsic value.

Calling the cops on the real estate droid wouldn't do much. OTOH, calling the broker (her boss) sounds like a solution. He's going to lose the big commission.

All the HP test gear made it through the move. I should be grateful.

One thing you might look at while considering color printers: is it telling on me?
Modern color printers put a pattern of yellow dots on the printed page as mandated
by the government.?? These dots encode things like the printer model, serial number,
and IP address.?? Older printers do not do this.?? Here is a list of printers that do and
do not put these tracking dots on the page.

I had an 8550dn for? a good while, but the toners went up? up up in price so I figured
it was in obsolete mode.? Now I use a 4700n color with good results.

I had a nice 5si, but the plastic frame doing the engage and latch

4050tn is OK, but not nearly as robust as the 5si, (until the plastic cracking death happened) So sad.

Hi Paul,

Good to hear that my info on the connectors from Apr 5 was useful.

For further info, see pages 2-6, 2-7 of:

Apparently, there are some (minor?) differences between the original HP connectors vs. the AMP/TE in terms of color and strength of the keying ridges.?

I'm curious as to what you used to crimp the connectors.

G'day Folks,
I cheated as I had removed the board several times before and didn't want that hassle
any more.
Snip the neon as close to the bulb envelope as possible and solder the zener(s) and resistor
to the left over wires. Keep the polarity of the zener in mind!
On both my units , that solution has been working for in excess of 5 years.

The TE Connectivity AMP Connectors 1-1761184-1 and 5-1761184-1 seem to match the HP-HIL cable connectors.

Where 1-1761184-1 has the "A" key for the One-Dot cable end and 5-1761184-1 has the "E" key for the Two-Dot cable end.

These appear to be a stocked item at Digikey and likely similar: Mouser, Arrow, etc.

Other manufacturer may be using the same SDL, Plug Modular Connector 4 Positions Position Shielded Crimp connectors for products other than HP-HIL.

?

I happened to have an IBM Point of Sale LCD Display that uses the "A" keyed connector for it's receptacles/cables though it likely uses RS-485 vs. HP-HIL. similar to:?

I tried the "A" (One-Dot) end of an HP-HIL in the receptacle of the LCD display and it made good electrical contact and mechanically latched. ?The IBM SDL cable that I have has "A" connectors on both ends and it has a different pinout than the HP-HIL cable. ?Still, similar IBM POS cables might be used for the "A" end of HP-HIL cable or by remapping the the wiring and hacking the "A" key to fit in a "E" receptacle.

?

I provide this to add to the discussion and possibly stimulate others research/evaluation. ?I make no claims to suitability/accuracy/etc. I don't represent any of the vendors. ?

?

I thought I had an HP-HIL keyboard that I might use to help develop a "real" PS/2 to HP-HIL converter, but it was an HP PS/2 keyboard with modular cables. ?Also, my plan use for my logic analyzer with HP-HIL is as spare parts for a newer logic analyzer with PS/2. ?So, my converter plans are suspended.?

141T reference replacement

Yes you can replace the ZZ1000 [equivalent] neon reference tube in the 141T power supply with a zener. Although this solves the fuse blowing problem, the temperature coeficient of voltage of the power supplies [plural - because this is the reference voltage for 4 supply rails] is degraded, because zener diodes have a high TC at these voltages.. In practice you might not be bothered by this. I did this with my 141T, and it`s still doing just fine. Hoping this is of interest......................................................................................................................Don Collie ZL4GX

*all* of the firmware and designs the control board. This has been the
case since the very first Canon CX engine, a.k.a. HP LaserJet Series I,
a.k.a. Canon LBP-8. HP added the whole top of the printer.

The LJ4, and the 4000 series (4000, 4050, 4100 etc) are basically just
new versions of the same printer with faster cpus in them, so they print
faster. Typically rock solid printers, and you can get them for ~$50,
with astonishingly low page counts if you know where to look. I know the
4200 has a notorious problem with some gears in the fuser - stay away
from those. The 11x17 multifunction office units of the same era as the
4200 seem to also have some issues - they sound like they're dying every
time it runs the engine, but yet they still print.
I very much like the 4000 series printers as well.

I have that circuit out in
front of me trouble
shooting that 100v supply on anothe system. My thought is
that a 62v "zener" is
not close enough to the 82v neon. You need another
20v?"zener" in series to
make up the difference. R118 only has a swing of about 9v so
not enough to make
up for the lower voltage.?The 5.6k would deffinitely
need increasing as the
62v?zener will be dissipating 400mW.
Good luck taking that pcb
out is not a job to be
undertaken lightly!!

[hp_agilent_equipment] Replace
Neon NE-2 with Zener in 141T PSU?

Hi All,

I have recently acquired an HP-141T with the
8554B and 8552B plugins.
Over the past month, the fuses in the plugins have blown
three times. I've
heard this can be an indication of an issue with the
display section's
PSU.?

Looking at the schematic and the board I have, I
appear to have the
older revision which uses neon lamps as a voltage
reference. The lamp in my
PSU board is pretty black looking -- that may be normal, I
don't
know.

At any rate, I wonder if I can replace the V1
neon with a 62 volt
zener diode? Part number?2EZ62D5/TR8CT-ND from digikey,
for example? I
think any difference in the absolute level could be
trimmed out using the
+100V adjust pot. The biasing for the neon is a 5.6k
resistor, I think that
would work ok for the zener, but I could change it
presumably.&n

Thoughts??

Thanks,

Re: Replace Neon NE-2 with Zener in 141T PSU?

Here's an example:

If you make a replacement circuit that provides the same or close enough shunt regulator specs, it should drop in OK? without changing anything else. I think you can perform the surgery all from the component side without removing the PS board.

One nice thing about using a modern reference circuit is that the voltage won't overshoot. I'm convinced that many 141 failures were caused by temporary over-voltage while the gas tube had to reach striking voltage - significantly higher than running voltage.

Yes. I love my big non-cheap-consumer-crap printers. We put them
through far less abuse here than most big companies (but far more than
most individuals) and they don't even break a sweat.

Only reason I'm staying with the legacy product is I still have one (in

Their non-consumer printers are still top notch, but if you're not
prepared to drop $4,000 on one, forget it.

Personally, I use HP's older enterprise-grade printers, like the
8150DN (mono) and 8550DN (color). They are indestructible,
maintainable, and trivial to get supplies for. And 11x17 support,
duplexing, and 32 pages per minute is really, really nice.
