Re: HP8407A Network Analyzer... opinions?

Jose V. Gavila

Hello my friends,

Well, I finally did it, as it was an eBay offer (so it had an ending date
yesterday night), was located locally (in Valencia, Spain, where this evening F1
world champion Alonso will present McLaren-Mercedes new car ;-) ) and price was
about right; so I have bought a working 8407A, with the 8412A display and a
8601A sweeper for the equivalent of US$284. Please, note that I am in Spain,
where HP equipment is by far less available than in other markets.

So, well, I know it has not accessories (in fact, it has not even BNC-BNC
cables!), but it was tested by the seller (I know him personally) and it works
(there were also pictures of it in the auction).

110MHz is not too high, but to start playing with network analyzers (I have
never had a _working_ one at home; I have an 8754A but currently is not
working), it should be enough. If I later find the need for higher frequencies
or functionality, will look for other options.

But by now I will stay with the 8407A :-)!. Once I have it at home I will let
you know how it works (let's hope it really does!)

Thanks for your help; don't think I have not listened to your opinions, which
have been really valuable.

Regards,

JOSE

Re: 141T storage failure

Thanks Richard,

I guess that the week-end stopped other guruhs from responding.
Since Richard's mail the following has happened:
checked ground lead for -12.6V heater supply, also connected earth side to ground with lead. Even connected a 12V bulb across it result: ground connection is OK.
checked all other crimped connectors at their respective connection point result: all seem OK
checked 6.3V heater supply, put 6V bulb across it: all OK
checked connections to pots on store panel: all OK
checked all leads coming from CRT, including those coming from the top to their corresponding connections on respective boards: all OK

Could someone please confirm that the colour coding of the wiring to the neck of the CRT is as follows, looking from the front of the equipent towards the back: (9),(5),(943),(9),(5),(4) This is not obvious from the manual.

Would appreciate suggestions / advice, where to go from here.

Chris

I had the same problem ,12.6V on the flood gun pin - no obvious flood
gun operation.
It turned out to be the ground lead from the "cold" side of the flood
gun ( pin 11, black wire )was not continuous to ground. The black
lead inner conductor was broken at the push-on connector to the HV
board. These connectors are known for poor crimping which fails after
several pushon /pulloff events.

Re: HP8407A Network Analyzer... opinions?

Ok, thanks for the info!. What is in the 'accessory kit'?

It has probes, adapters, and such things as I remember.

>You might want to look at an 8505A if you have a choice.

Could I get an 8505A for less than US$300 ???

Regards,
JOSE

Maybe. You would have to shop carefully and get the parts one at a time.
A full 8505A has 4 boxes. You MUST have two, the RF Section and the
Display. The Storage Normalizer and S Parameter are options. If you
don't have the S Parameter, you may need a Reflection-Transmission Test
Set. It depends somewhat on your intended use. The 8505A goes to 1.8
GHz. If you are going to probe IFs, the 8407 might be a better choice.

IMO, the 8413 meter is near useless except for CW measurements.

The expensive parts are often the special cables required to
interconnect the boxes. They've been discussed on-list fairly recently.

Wonderful news, Tomas!

I have the BAMA collection saved on disk.

Unfortunately I have a bunch of manuals mixed into the
collection, that is the work of some manual providers, I guess
they will not be happy to find their stuff outthere =) They
are however not that many, and these are also separated in
the backups.

But if you need anything, write a line.

Btw, the one that needed a 2246 manual, I have el 2246IY
manuelo available.

Lars

Since BAMA is scaling down, I have decided to take over from

I have created a new domain, called www.ebaman.com,

I will start to build the website at the end of this week.

At least one member keeps a server with manuals, i think the right
persons will reply.
You could also try <
<>
info.com/>

Now that BAMA does no longer take TEK stuff, i think we should
actively do something in that regard.
There should be a list of sorts, or a table, with all free digital
manuals that we know of, and listing locations where they are.
We only need one "download" place, but we should have
several people
have a copy locally. It should take little effort to keep a
few CDs or
DVDs with manuals, just in case one of those download
places is lost,
and by distributing them there should always be many people
with the
same copy, if someone is unreachable for some reason.

I made a database in the database section, to show what i
am talking
about <.
<>
groups.yahoo.com/group/TekScopes/database>

I think there may be other ways to do this, but that's the general
idea.
Over time manuals will surely be distributed over many servers,
especially now with BAMA. I believe instead of attempting
to set up a
central archive that has all it would work better to have the files
distributed, as long as there is some index somewhere to
find them and
backup copies in case one server is lost.

What do you think?
