Re: 8501A Normalizer manual
Gary Peterson
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýChuck; If I am unable to get this normalizer working, I'd be happy to loan you the cable until I round up another one for parts, so you can at least see if that painfully broke feeling would have some reward with your own 8501A! As for the manual, I just hope I can use my 35 sheet, sheet fed scanner...? on long foldouts it scans the entire foldout as a series of 81/2 x 11 sheets automatically (an HP laserjet 3015 all in one).? I also have a private FTP server on a T3 connection, and if it's a help at some point, we can upload and download large documents with it to save postage and time.? Just need to use it after midnight and before 6am for mega-transfers, and that is no problem with an FTP client that like WS FTP Pro which permits scheduling. Oh, I also have the new 2005 ARRL Handbook CD, CE-31/A/B and Singer CSM-1 service manuals, off topic, but thought I'd mention it. Gary NZ5V Chuck Harris wrote: Hi Gary, |

That brochure would certainly seem to indicate that the 8501A should work for you. By 1986, the literature wasn't making any mention of 8754A compatibility. As to the adjustment, the DAC gain is plainly labeled on the A6, ADC board (Blue handle). I shouldn't think it would be too tricky, but then, I have no manual. ...As to that, if you do find yourself scanning Mike's manual, (150 pages, IIRC), I wouldn't mind getting a copy. I'm feeling kind of painfully broke after paying $300 for the manual set for my 8505A. And I still don't have any cables for my 8501A. -Chuck Harris - WA3UQV Gary Peterson wrote: Chuck; |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGary ¨C ? OK, I¡¯ll use the address from QRZ. I do have PayPal, but no need. When you send it back if you want to put in the actual cost that I incurred that would be fine, but even that will not be necessary. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýChuck;Attached is a part of an 8754a sales brochure dated 1 JAN 84.? Note that the section on the 8501A states: "A single internal adjustment (DAC Gain) is required for 8754A compatibility".? I respectfully point out that I did read the HP Literature before deciding that the 8501A was compatible with my 8754A.? I don't know if the image will be displayed, but a scanned image portion of the sales brochure is included below. Mike, I would like very much to make a copy of your manual.? I do have both a sheet feed scanner and a flatbed scanner. My callbook address is correct, and I was wondering if I could PayPal you the postage? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGary ¨C ? Looks like you received a lot of valuable advice. If you feel you still need information from the manual, the easiest thing for me would be to mail it to you by priority mail on Monday and then you could mail it back when you are done. I use mine with an 8505A without problems. I¡¯ll need you mailing address if you want it. 73 - Mike ? ? Mike B. Feher, N4FS 89 Arnold Blvd. Howell, NJ, 07731 732-901-9193 ? ? -----Original

analyzer system. The 8501A also is special in that it is setup to normalize both the polar display and the phase-magnitude display of the 8505A. As further evidence of my belief, HP sold both normalizers at the same time. In the description of the 8750A, they list a hand full of instruments that are compatible. -Chuck Harris Gary Peterson wrote: John; |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJohn; You are so right!? The 8750A must have OPTION 1 installed in it according to my 8754A manual.? It's a special interface card, and of late one was on Ebay.? I wanted to get the 8501A working because it has the HPIB interface, and the 8750A does not. Also, I think my analyzer needs an adjustment to work properly with the 8501A... hence needing the manual, as my book does not do more than indicate that I have to adjust something! ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSome
of these normalizers, like the 8750A, required a 'personality module' to make
them work with particular pieces of gear.? For instance, the 8750A could be
configured for use with either the 8505 VNA or 141T spectrum analyzer, if?I
remember correctly.?
?
So
it's possible that your 8501A is in working order after all, but configured for
use with?an 8505 or something else.

8501A Normalizer manual
Gary Peterson
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMike;Perhaps the best first question is can you email me a couple of pages that would guide me through testing the 8501A?? I have an in-calibration 8754A and my analyzer manual does not cover the "adjustment" that needs to be made to use the 8501A, but does mention it. The Storage Normalizer does not toggle when I press the local/remote button on the far right (although the LED does flicker on power up), and the display goes blank if I turn the storage display control to "ON" or "HOLD".? I expected something to happen, but not a blank display. I have already checked the 8501A, reseated all boards, looked for component problems, power supply problems, etc.?? It was an EBAY deal...? what can I say!? I really would like to get it working, though.? I home-brew duplexers (have a set of 6m cans nearly complete right now), so let me know it there is anything I can offer you in exchange for a copy or to borrow your manual. Gary NZ5V |

From: vk2kyp Can anyone help me, I am looking for data on a HP8708A Synchroniser. I understand it can be used to stabilize a HP606b and late model HP608's. I generates a DC voltage which is used to changed the reverse bias on varacter diode. This is used as a fine frequency control, and is referenced back to a crytsal oscillator in the HP8708A. This is about all I know, any futher information is appreciated. ***Gary and the list. The correct synchroniser for the HP 606B and the HP 608F is indeed the HP 8708A.I will email you the specification page from the manual. The synchronizer works on the huff and puff oscillator stabilization principle and is extremely accurate and stable after initial warm up.
