screwdriver would bite into hex pattern; a little tapping on screwdriver, while knob is supported on hard surface, might help that bite. And do not forget that a drop of Marvel Oil (or any other type of penetrating oil) into screw hole would probably loosen screw enough to remove it; socking for at least a day is recommended. A second tack would be to try grooved Allen wrenches. I would not know where to find them, never seen a whole set, only leftover from sets. Once that I tried, seemed to work quite well. Also, a metric wrench might make an oversize one, you have to convert dimensions. Before using any Allen wrenches, inspect tip of the wrench. Sometimes, those tips get distorted and worn out, so you are operating an undersized wrench. Tips can be restored by grinding off the worn part; do not forget, wrenches are heat treated, so do not overheat them on the grinder. Best of luck, Miroslav Pokorni ----- Original Message -----

Stubborn Allen Screws
Dear Colleagues,
I need some help and or tips on how to remove frozen Allen set-screws like the ones found on equipment knobs. The typical scenario happens when trying to remove a stubborn set screw. The Allen wrench "slips" and rounds the insertion pattern slightly. Has anyone heard of a slightly oversized set of Allen wrenches (on the order of .001" - .002") or is this the wrong approach? If they exist, who supplies them? Any comments and/or suggestions are welcome. Regards, Mike DiGirolamo, W4XN Charlottesville, VA 22901 |

Greetings from a lurker and test equipment junkie :-)
The USM-207 is not the same as a 5245. I have had both and I expect the circuitry probably isn't even the same. Although I didn't check the manuals when I had the equipment. The -207 I had did come with the 500 MHz converter, and I think there may have been others available, but I never found out for sure. Back to lurking. - Mark |
Re: 5245 counter service manual
-----------------------------------
Dave, The only version of the HP 5245L that I've found on the LOGSA site is called the CP-772A/U (and maybe also the CP-772/U), which appears to be an H96-5245L. On the LOGSA site, they have only the parts-list manual for the unit. There are two other TMs for it that are NOT on line, there. Their TM numbers are listed in the parts-list manual, which is TM 11-6625-1682-24P. The downloadable parts manual, unlike many of the other LOGSA parts-list manuals, DOES have detailed board/component-layout and exploded view diagrams, with lists of part numbers. But for component values, you either have to decipher them from the part numbers or have a copy of the Federal Logistics (Fedlog) database. According the the Fedlog database, the 5245M is called the CP-1049P/U. But I couldn't find any manuals for it, on LOGSA, searching titles for CP-1049 and also searching by its NSN/NIIN numbers for the two 5245M versions listed. Good luck! Hi Dave and all the List,
Is USM-207 the correct designator?I think it is not... When I was trying to repair my 5245M I fount a WEB page with links to the USM-207 manuals and, not, it is not same beast. It could be similar in design but definitely very different externally. Regards, JOSE ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 73 EB5AGV / EC5AAU - JOSE V. Help for 8557A
I posted an album with photos that I hope will make my question
clear. Please view and help me if you can. Any comments about this unit and general assistance with HP documentation would be welcome. I know the data is good in the HP manuals but it's like I have to learn to read all over again. Maybe I've studied too many Tektronix manuals.:) Thanks in advance for any help and comments. HP 8557A Spectrum Analyzer
Good morning Group,
I recently purchased a 8557A that looks to be in good condition but I don't have a display so I haven't been able to check it out. Neither have I been able to find a service manual but I do have a manual for the 8558A which at least is similar. My Question is, there seems to be a missing lead from the compression fitting labled LO OUT located on the top surface about in the center of the unit. Can someone help me to determine where this lead terminates. A photo of the top view of the unit would be great if you could e-mail a copy to me. Also what is the connector at the top left rear from the front view. It looks like some sort of interlock or a contact point from within the cabinet. I have a HP 180d scope frame on the way. Will the 180d have the necessary options required for the basic operation of this unit? Anyone with experience with this unit could be a very big help to me and I would appreciate it very much George Headley Atlanta |

I don't have experience directly with this connector but there are a couple of shielded connectors that use two contact pins. One is called Twinax and the other is used on the R-390 tube type military receiver. The following companies may be of help: Have Fun, Brooke Clarke, N6GCE Date: Thu, 08 Jul 2004 04:32:42 -0000 |
