Re: Troubleshooting a 8591e with opt 130

Marco,

?

There may be several problems but: if there was a problem with the lin/log detector, the filters should still have the same level between them, which is not the case, it is surprising.

Now for the test with AUX IF and AUX VIDEO: at AUX IF, I redid the measurements because I realized that I had left an attenuator on the test cable.

?

For -20dBm at 300MHz I get -44dBm at AUX IF and 0.745V at AUX VIDEO.

You got for -20dBm, -48dbm at AUX IF and 0.763V at AUX VIDEO.

?

When you have 14.5dB of excess gain (resBW= 10kHz:

You got -38dBm at AUX IF and 0.932V at AUX VIDEO.

?

If I increase the level at 300 MHz by 14.5dB to get -29.5dBm at AUX IF, I get 0.934V at AUX VIDEO.

?

So I would say the problem is probably in the filter bank.

?

Test all the filters and note which ones are close to -20dBm, and which ones are 15dB too much.

From the table below, we might be able to find a clue.

If you haven't already done so, I would reseat the A11 and A13 boards in case it is a bad contact for the control signals.

?

You also noted that: when you have 15dB too much, you are in LOG mode, but if you switch to LIN mode, you have -20dBm, which is the expected RF level.

Look when you have a resBW with the right level (-20dBm), do you always have -20dBm or 15dB less in LIN mode.

According to your answer, it will be necessary to analyze all the control signals linked to the filter and detection.

Did the proposed measurement

so?

- PRESET

- Put the 300 MHz REF on the 8591E connector

- SPAN 1 MHz

- ZERO SPAN

Now something caught my eye again there, the different span changes the level significantly:

1MHz span, -5.5dBm, the same at 100kHz Span.

at 10kHz span though, level -20dBm, as is at 1kHz span:

so at 0Hz:

?

To mimic your measurement I changed the rbw to 10kHz:?

the marker level went back up to -5dBm

2

Measured level at Aux Video out: 0.932V

Measured level at IF out: -38.0dBm @ 21.40 MHz

?

I redid the measurement with the smaller RBW, causing the 8591e to read the marker at -19.98dBm

Measured level at Aux Video out: 0.761V

Measured level at IF out: -48.3dBm @ 21.40 MHz

?

I'm also trying to do an analysis of the differences in the calibrations videos, will update about that later.

Re: Troubleshooting a 8591e with opt 130

Looking more into the cal routines and comparing to other machines my attention was pulled towards the Lin/Log switching during calibration showing big differences.
After a selfcal I checked the 300MHz carrier level again in preset, -5dBm. Then I switch to Lin with Amp > Scale and voila the carrier was at 300MHz -20.0dBm.
Apparently the self cal finds it neccesary to increase the level by 15dBm for the Log amp.?
Next I tried correct off, this didn't change the levels, I did a default cal data again with Freq -2001Hz and now all of a sudden the 300MHz is at -16dBm in the Log setting but at -35dBm in the Lin setting. So it looks like it's missing 15dB of gain in the Lin setting?

Re: Connector identification

This was a tricky one.? I believe that it is an OSMT or SSMT connector made by Tyco.? See ? You will need to verify the exact dimensions.
?
In general, you can find a good listing of connectors at this page: ?? , but in this case this connector was not on the list.

hi tom , i cleaned contacts with isopropilic alcohol but now i have even more problems. The oscillator works , but the notch filter does not track the oscillator.?
It work only with the multiplier selector is in 1x and 100x .. when i am in 1k and 10k there is no track. I checked all the condenser of the boards and they look and measure good.

Given the vaguely unnatural nature of this question, it¡¯s probably best answered by Dave McGuire however, I¡¯ll put it out there for anybody just in case.

Has anybody discovered away, using either USB to HPIB converters, or ethernet to HPIB converters, to remotely locate or talk to a remotely located HPIB printer?

My situation is this, I have a very nice HP inkjet printer with HPIB be located in the basement where there¡¯s plenty of room. It generally speaks to the instruments down there. However, I also have a number of instruments in my lab upstairs, which I¡¯d love to be able to send print jobs to said printer.

I¡¯m hoping there¡¯s a simple way that I can use it remotely, either through some kind of a shim, or something other than figuring out a way to get another cable from here to there.

Marco,

?

Our calibration constants are really similar, which thickens the mystery.

With these results, we will have no choice but to measure at different locations and compare our measurements.

Let's take 2 easy points, AUX IF OUTPUT and AUX VIDEO OUTPUT on the rear panel.

?

There should be no problem with that, but check if AMP CORR is OFF.

The measurement on another Spectrum (or tinySA) at 21.4MHz on the AUX IF OUTPUT connector gives me about -51dBm, with a voltmeter on the AUX VIDEO OUTPUT output I have about - 300mV.

If these two tests are OK, then we will have to measure near the ADC. I will wait for your results.

Also the optional 3rd input module is connected with another ribbon cable. Could you share more details about that board please?

Re: Troubleshooting a 8591e with opt 130

Yves,
?
I did the Freq and amplitude al this evening after an hour of warmup. I made a full video of it but it's rather huge so i have to find a proper way to reduce the size first.
The result was a passed calibration and the 300MHz level at roughly -5dB again
Below is a picture of the Cal data, I didn't see anything that seems off.?
?
The Tuning:
?
NBW:
?
Additionally the Analyzer Gains: (maybe the 0dB for the 21.4dB gain is strange?)
?
The flatness correction data, all 0:
?
There is something else, when I just had the analyzer, I found a part about the?the service diag options in the cal menu. For example the FM Span, FM Coil Drive, 2v Ref and Gnd Ref detector. It showed the trace on the screen.
I can't find the mention of it at the moment, in the service manual i linked before there is a part of it starting at page 238 (Using the Internal Service-Diagnostic
Routines) But the FM Span isn't in there. From what I recall the FM span in 10MHz span had to be an upward slope but it was downward for my analyzer.
This was the picture I took, notice the FMSPAN below the REF. Perhaps I'm confusing it with the FM coil drive though.
I'm not sure if it is any relevant but you're probably a better judge of that.

FS (SE/EU): HP8753D 6GHz Vector Network Analyzer

Hi all,
?
I¡¯m selling a HP8753D with options 002 (Harmonic Meas), 006 (6 GHz) and 010 (Time Domain). The unit also comes with front handles and APC-7 port connectors.

When I got this unit I started with replacing the dreaded RIFA capacitors in the PSU. I also replaced C7 in order to make sure that the CRT can run the latest firmware.?

Starting the unit I found that the RF output was dead so I have replaced the YTO with a Wiltron model and tweaked A11 board to handle the new YTO current tuning curve. The unit passes all necessary self adjustments routines after source module replacement. It also passes Operator Check on both ports (test 21 & 22).?

I have also enabled 002 and 010 option and as well upgraded the firmware from v5.38 to the latest v6.14. 3D printed and mounted bottom rear feet. I can provide documentation of the work I¡¯ve done.

In short I think this unit is well prepared for future use. When I received the unit the front panel was quite dusty but it was surprisingly clean on the inside. The unit is in very good cosmetic condition given its age.

Asking price is €1600 + shipping. I¡¯d like keep the shipping within EU and that the buyer arranges pickup or leave it at a local drop off point for DHL/UPS or similar. If the buyer can solve customs/import/export bureaucracy that comes with shipping outside EU those offers will be considered as well.

Bids including local pickup will get a good discount.?
I can also offer a pair of used Amphenol APC-7 to SMA female adapters for €120.?
Payment via Paypal. SE buyers can contact me for other delivery and payment options.

Re: N8973A Firmware Update issue

Olaf, I can send you the loader file and the other five disk files. I prepared them using a WIN 7 system. Maybe my files will work if you copy them using your floppy drive. I suppose it's possible that newer Windows versions write floppy drives differently. Send me an email so I can attach the files.
?
The problems are not all related to Microsoft and Windows. The NFA N897XA series has particularly unfriendly firmware. The file management system feels like an abandoned remnant from the early DOS/WIN 3 days. They could have done a lot better.
