Thanks for the suggestion. Do you remember if you did indeed get a full 50 dB dynamic range on your 436As? – Regards - Mike

Mike,

?

Before you go and try and repair the power meter try and do a full re-alignment on it.? I have found that if you are not getting good readings at the low end that re-aligning the 436A will bring it right back into specs.? The whole alignment procedure can be done in about a half an hour or so with only a meter, range calibrator and counter if my memory serves me correctly.? This was the meter of choice when I was in the Marines and with years of use and age in general they just don't hold the specs. as long as you would think.? We had ours on a two or three year cycle and I would still pull them every?six months and have the guys do an alignment and cal.? We couldn't have the cal lab being the ones OOT.? Now I work commercial repair and cal and no one wants them stickered for less than a year.? I think the money issue is a problem that is going to screw up alot of measurements.

Thanks for the info. The only problem is all three of my 436s behave the same way. What are the chances of all 3 having the same problem? Is there any one on here who does get a full 50 dB of dynamic range with their 436A? Did you try it Brooke? I just want to make sure it is me. I mentioned it to another friend of mine and he seemed to remember running into the same dilemma. 73 - Mike

Hi Mike:

I asked a friend who's probably one of the world's experts on power
measurements and he thinks you 436 is defective.? His reply is:

"Probably the A2 card (AC gain board, contains true range decoder) of
the 436... might be the controller card A5 ... sends the range data to
the A2."

Brooke –

For example, I can take any of my sensors, which are marked to have a 50 dB range and connect them to a signal generator. I start out with the maximum level indicated on the sensor and all is well. I go down 10 dB on the generator and the 436A follows, 10 more dB it still follows. Now, go 10 dB more and typically it goes under-range and no more reading. I just tried it using an 8484A which has a stated range of -20 dBm to -70 dBm. With -20 it is OK, -30 it is OK, -40 is OK, now I go to -50 and it just reads -4 indicating below range. Before applying power the readout showed a -7 indicating it properly detected the lowest range of the sensor. So, what’s up? Thanks - Mike

Don't Disconnect It On Accident Or You Will Lose Your Calibration.

there a bulb hidden very cleverly somewhere?

Hi,

You could try checking the DIP switch. They can go bad. You may want to
replace it.

Howdy All-

RE: HP1715A (and family) scope -- rear panel foot/bumper.

Anyone have a spare rear panel foot (more like a leg) that bolts to
the rear apron on the HP 1715A scope?

These are black resilient plastic about 2 inches tall also has power
cord retainer clips molded into the plastic.

Could use one or two...

Please advise.

Thanks!

RF Voltmeter HP 3406A

Gentlemen,

I have a HP 3406A Broadband Sampling Voltmeter I am repairing.

According to the test procedure in the manual , the probe assembly is faulty and should be replaced as it is not field repairable.

I doubt if these are available from HP and if they were one could not afford the price they would ask.

Does anyone have any experience with fixing these probes?

Failing this is there anyplace a replacement can be found.

Thanks
