Re: Agilent E4404B Spectrum Analyzer With Dead PSU Repair

Apologize for the 2MB size photos, I was in a rush.
And also, the SMPS was powered from an isolation transformer?

Re: Agilent E4404B Spectrum Analyzer With Dead PSU Repair

After a bit of reading I sort of understand the start up procedure of a typical SMPS. A start up capacitor is charged from rectified mains, usually via a power resistor. This cap is connected to the controller circuit supply rail. When the psu is turned on and the caps is charged enough, the controller is turned on and starts driving the main switching transformer via a power MOSFET. On the main switch transformer, a small secondary winding output is rectified and fed to the controller circuit, this will now power the controller instead of the small start up cap.

I managed to ID the startup cap, which measured fine.
I then probe 2 points, the PWM controller supply pin(fed from a LT1121 regulator) and the secondary winding output.
The scope shows that the startup cap circuit works fine. But the output of the secondary winding isn¡¯t. It only shows oscillation for about 50ms before disappearing, causing the circuit to shut down and restart. I¡¯ll do more probing around the controller, driver section tonight.

Re: Welcome, Leo! I know I've seen your name before; are you on the TekScopes group? That's a nice HPAK gear collection you have. Unfortunately I can't help you with your 54620C. Re: N9020A

Sounds good!
It would be interesting to see a screenshot of the hardware page where it lists the hardware modules inside the analyser.
Somewhere on the HDD there will be all the *.LIC files for your options. It's worth making several copies of these. I'm assuming they will be in *.LIC format. They might be configured in Windows as hidden files though.

It would be interesting to see how the noise figure option works. You can make a basic 28V noise source for under $10 that would prove functionality. A genuine HP 346A/B/C noise source will obviously be very expensive.
I have two homebrew 28V noise sources here that work well with the Agilent PSA.

I'd also strongly recommend that you make or buy a dc block for the front end. That's because I'm assuming this analyser will not be dc blocked. If it is already dc blocked then I guess you won't need one. At work, the biggest killer of a spectrum analyser front end is from external DC fed to the input.

Re: N9020A

Well mine has arrived and the reason the whole tread was started, which hasn't been hijacked too much but would like to report on my findings on the unit delivered.

Seems OK, bit scruffy but fully functional with Noise Figure, Analog demod (inc FM stereo) and phase noise + all the other (somewhat useless to me) demod types.

I think it's got the enhanced display and prec ref too, will check again.

These are the options listed in the sale;

N6141-2FP, N9020A-2FP,N9020A- 503, N9020A-B25 ,N9020A-EDP ,N9020A-P03,N9020A-PFR, N9060A-2FP ,N9060A-3FP,N9060A-4FP,N9060A-5FP,N9060A-6FP,N9060A-7FP,N9063A-2FP,3FP,N9064A-1FP,2FP,N9068A-2FP,N9069A-1FP,2FP,N9071-2FP,3FP,N9072A-2FP,N9073A-1FP,2FP, N9075A-2FP,N9076A-1FP,N9077A-1FP,2FP N9079A-1FP,2FP,N9080A-1FP,2FP, N9082A-1FP,2FP.

Sure the serial number isn't even recognised by Keysight and personally I dont care as it's never going anywhere near them and will remain in my lab till it passes away, gracefully I hope!

Total cost including the ?100 ish import fee was ?1600. I'm ok with that as my business is my hobby and can offord to buy equipment at this price.

I'd like to add new features if possible and make a copy of the HDD.

Minor niggle is I have no Admin rights which is a pain but easily circumvented.

Cheers

JohnB.

Re: N9020A

In the case of Alltest, it's normal for it to have both names, since you can see that the processor board has been changed, since the instrument is now running Windows 7. At the time of its release, this MXA was running Windows XP. I personally own an N9020A whose processor board has been officially changed to a Windows 7 version. It's sticked Agilent on the front panel and when it starts up, the Windows welcome screen shows a splendid Keysight logo. But at least mine is officially supported by Keysight France, whereas I know perfectly well, having asked my friends at Keysight, that most of those sometimes found in China or Korea won't be. There is indeed a serial number server on the Keysight website which allows you, whenever you want to buy a piece of equipment, to check whether the version to be purchased corresponds to the indication on the Keysight site.

All, I finally obtained a proper bulb -- turns out, my GF had an unopened package of 2 60 watt incandescent?bulbs.? Woo hoo.? Finally got the bulb connected after removing the fuse holder.? HOWEVER, now, as soon as I turn the unit on, the bulb goes full bright, and nothing is displayed on the screen anymore.? Not sure if it is booting up "activated" or what.? Definitely not good...worries that the last time it booted something happened and the fuse wasn't fast enough or ....?

I have no financially interest in this-but please look up the seller I refer to.He clearly states that their MXA`s have been ``fixed`` regarding options,so no Keysight Lab will service/cal it..The alltest link were just to show that even? Besides I do admire your xdevs site-good work.

Alltest you linked is a legit unit with everything mathing up nicely, including records in Keysight calibration database, with report available from 1 December 2009.

Hello Hardy,

EXT is E6607B :
They are obviously legit Agilent/Keysight hardware and components, including software and license server. But MXA you see on all those ebay listings are modified units and they run modified license servers, made to work with any serial number and license key. Dead give away available on the screenshots of the listings, where you see machine HostID S/N and actual S/N of the unit not matching up. Legitimate licenses issued by Keysight always match in S/N. If you look very closely you can also see that all these $1-2k MXAs have aftermarket labels, like the font and logos don't match actual factory made Keysight/Agilent N9020A.
It's also easy to check by running S/N of converted MXA via Keysight support database to see what it comes back to ;)

Now , do they work as real 3.6GHz MXA? Yes, at least I had all the basic functions behave as expected.
But it does not mean they would be supported, serviced or related to Keysight in any official way anymore after such "conversion". :)

I've got mine few years back. They get lot of EXT units when upgraded their cell tower base station test labs to newer and faster equipment. EXT is essentially MXA hardware with different personality and additional source hardware for wireless testing. All these sellers took that additional hardware, modified the ID on these units to become a standard MXA 9020 and copied software licenses for these units to work as MXA. Some of the sellers claim to calibrate them to match 3.6GHz specs of "real" 9020, but there are no any traceable papers obviously. So that's what they are. Mine unit works fine, but I'm not experienced in RF domain, my interests usually stop at 50 MHz (not GHz!) :-)

If anybody wants some tests, I can probably run them and post results, but keep in mind that I don't have the usual RF hardware in my DC/LF lab.

However it looks like mobile phone manufacturers are getting rid of their old test kit to anyonyone and various 3rd parties are selling them on.

They've probably got 100's if not 1000's of them.

Some seem to have no idea and eventually found a seller via the .com site rather than the .co.uk site with a better price and who was willing to communicate, show pictures of the options etc.

The adverts are poor and cut and pasted and do say 'Brand new', XP system etc as the sellers dont know what they are selling.

You may be able to get a $1200 one with all the options if you look hard enough. I paid a bit more but as a run a business so it hurts less!!

Yes Carsten the same items are listed with multiple sellers and understand it looks a bit bogus.

Will report back when it arrives.

Re: HP6643A - Blows Fuse When Activated

What the bulb is doing is limiting the current into the equipment.? All the voltages will be low.

What this is useful for is

1) saving fuses

2) running things at reduced input voltages which, depending on the power supply, may allow you to figure out which supply(s) has/have the shorted capacitor to ground.

Measure ONLY on the output of the supplies and circuitry, DO NOT measure on the directly rectified AC.

Re: Seeking HP 80000 Data Generator (aka 2900A) system software

As an update, the HP80K system boot disk creation went well using Stan's files pointers and an old PC.

The mainframe itself appears to have some power supply issues - it'll run briefly and then lock up with all five cards in, and make it 5-10 minutes with only one card seated. During that run time, self tests pass for the CPU board but others fail.

When all cards are in, after boot when the backplane power supply and the internal jet engine main cooling fan start up, the display dims and the CRT raster contracts considerably, which is why I suspect a power issue.

Welcome, Leo! I know I've seen your name before; are you on the TekScopes group? That's a nice HPAK gear collection you have. Unfortunately I can't help you with your 54620C. I had a 54504A for a while and currently have a 54120B. All my other scopes (4 at the moment) are Tektronix. I fix want to welcome you to the HPAK group, though. Hi.
I'm new to this group and thought a little introduction is in order.
I am a semi-retired EE, specialized in the design of RFID readers which I have been doing for the past 30+ years.
Not a collector of HP gear per se, but I have aquired the odd bit here and there, most of it has been in storage for the past two or more decades:
HP 3325
HP 3330B with 3570A
HP 141T with 8552A and 8553B sections
HP 3577A
HP 3577A with 35677A
HP 3577B with 35677B
HP 8640B
Agilent 54620C
?
The 54620C is causing me problems: it refuses to start up and only produces a horizontal line on the display.
I looked inside but could not find any obvious defects or smells, or any shorted tantalum caps.
The only thing that stood out just a bit (literally) was the NVRAM module that appears a little bloated.
Photos will be uploaded shortly.
?
Regarding this problem I am left with the following questions:
1) what can cause this behaviour?
2) is there any essential (like calibration) data in that RAM, i.o.w. can I just replace it?
3) if there is essential data there, how do I go about to refres/place that data?
?
It all boils down to the ultimate question: is there hope of restoring it or is it a basket case?

Help me understand the 8510C memory boards

Hello,

I have a question related to the 8510C and more specifically related to
the Display Unit 85101C.

I noticed that there are 2 memory cards with the same part number
85101-60238 but they are not the same.

These cards have places for 2 rows of 16 EEPROMs Xicor X28HC256P but
some are soldered and some are empty sockets.

Same part number has 26 EEPROMs soldered and 6 empty sockets and another
card has 24 soldered EEPROMs and 8 empty sockets. EEPROM is the same
type on both cards so practically one card has less memory.

Unfortunately my card is the one with 8 empty sockets.

What is this card used for?
Can I add the extra EEPROMs in the empty sockets?
Do I need to reinstall the firmware of the 8510C?

I plan to run both 8530A and 8510C firmware. I have the PAL ICs for both.

For reference there is a picture attached with both cards.

Thanks,
Razvan

Re: new menber

Hi Leo,
Welcome to the Group!
Unfortunately, I can't help you with your 'scope problem because I'm not familiar with the HP 54620C.I do remember that we met around 10 years ago at your place where I picked up a Tek 2440 manual set that you offered.
I hope you can revive your 54620C!

Raymond
