Re: HP8568B does not start.

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for your reply. The CPU boards were identical and swapping them confirmed the dead 8568B chassis was indeed fully functional. I'll keep working on the A15 and perhaps I might find what's wrong with it.

@Don Bitters - Thanks for your suggestion but this test confirms that the internal 10MHz reference is functional.

Here are things to check:

4) Are the FIRMWARE versions the same

If 2,2 and 4 are identical, absolutely OK to change.? If 2 and 4 are?

If 4 are the same it is also probably OK

Just collect all the data B4 doing the sub.

heavy unit that has just been shipped, the first thing that I'd check is
for something having dislodged inside; a cable, PCB, etc.

Thanks for the confirmation..!

And, can you comment on if / how the whisker tip geometry might affect characteristics..? I'm wondering if a 'blunt' tip at the contact point might alter performance at high frequencies...

Re: Mixing 'n' matching S parameter test sets

The 8748A is, I believe, the S parameter test set that will work the the 8754a.

You _should_ be able to get these cheap since they won't do diddly with more modern VNAs. But try convincing an ebay seller of that!

Likewise, there are 2 normalizers that can work the the 8754a and they also _should_ be cheap since all this stuff is incredibly obsolete.

As a side note, there's an article in the HP Journal on hooking up an 8754A to a computer and various bits to automate measurements and get a bit closer to a modern VNA.

Full discloser: I have an 8754a with all the trimmings. Other than the miniVNA that's available, it's about the cheapest route to a full scale VNA for occasional use. The grease pencil bit still gives me a chuckle.

If I did a lot of RF work I'd get something newer.

When 8754A was developed, it was impossible to predict what the future microprocessor-based VNA would be. The 85044A or B transmission/reflection test set will work with it as it has no switching and has only an attenuator with a knob. They can be found relatively cheap. I had a couple of them, sold one and now I use the other with my Rigol RSA-3000 series spectrum analyzer/tracking generator as a SNA (scalar network analyzer) to 3 GHz.

Could be. ;) The OP sent a terse and rude message with a picture, saying "I need this". Nothing else. I mean, I'm sorry, but I'm not going to interrupt my day to help when the request is made in such a way.

But to his credit, he rephrased and re-posted it, flawlessly, and is now redeemed in my book. So I don't have to find him and slash his tires the next time I'm in NJ. ;)

Wow.

"HI everyone, I'm looking for the IC in the attached photo to fix
one of my instruments. Would anyone happen to have one to spare? Will
pay a reasonable price, swap, etc. Thanks, I hope everyone is having
a nice Friday night."

There. Fixed that for ya.

Sheesh.

Have not opened her up yet but looks like a uP related issue.
Anyone ever work on these? I hope it's not a ROM/GAL issue!
Might be a clue here as I do not "hear" any relay clicks...
I've not worked on one, but the schematics are available. Being a heavy unit that has just been shipped, the first thing that I'd check is for something having dislodged inside; a cable, PCB, etc.

The next thing I'd check is main power. Check the line voltage configuration switches, and see if you get anything past the bridge rectifiers. Looking at the schematic, I see there are a few power rails generated; check them all. The +5V rail can apparently be isolated from the rest of the unit using W2.

These are really nice power supplies; it's worth giving it some attention.

Re: HP 6033A DOA

Seems to be a full service manual.

Good luck looks like a nice but darn smart power supply.
Smart = trouble
