Re: HP-8753E Which PROM Holds S/N & OPT Info?

Hi again,

I had a look in the 8753D and 8753ES/ET service manuals what they say what needs to be done for a A9 CPU board replacement. Both says you need to re-enter the serial number and options. I do not see why 8753E should be different.

Re: HP-8753E Which PROM Holds S/N & OPT Info?

Hi all,
I can only answer for the 8753D with the older CPU board and firmware v5 and v6, not the newer ones with firmware v7 used on the 8753E series or 8753D with option 000 upgrades.
The EEPROM data backup to floppy does not contain the serial number and option bytes. Maybe that has changed on the newer CPU board, maybe not.

So perform the EEPROM floppy backup first and see if you find the serial number in that file.

Best regards
Marcus

Re: HP8568B does not start.

Does your 8568B have the internal 10MHz OCXO running? If not check the internal/external ref switch for the correct setting. If set to internal, check for 10 MHz at about -10 dBm at the rear 10 MHz port. If missing, put 10MHz at greater than -10 dBm into the ext ref port.
The 8568 will not run - giving some of the symptoms you listed. The internal system RF chain and a chunk of the digital electronics will not function without the 10 MHz. This is unlike the 8566 which runs off the internal 100MHz (locked to the 10 MHz).

Re: AM modulated sine wave - Q about oscilloscope triggering

Ah, of course! So obvious now you say that. Working now.

Many thanks

Tony

Re: AM modulated sine wave - Q about oscilloscope triggering

Yes, you are using internal triggering and the picture jumps around because the spectrum you have is
three tones at 449, 450 and 451 kHz respectively. Move to external triggering instead.

Re: AM modulated sine wave - Q about oscilloscope triggering

I would use the 1kHz for external triggering the scope as well as the modulation.

My 2 cents,

AM modulated sine wave - Q about oscilloscope triggering

Apologies to all if this is a *really* basic question but I'm playing with AM modulation but struggling to set up my scope (Rigol DS1052) to trigger properly.

I have an HP 3325A producing 450kHz at 4Vpp. I'm AM modulating it at 1kHz/4Vpp. The output is modulating fine - I can vary the modulation frequency and Vpp and it changes as expected. But I'm struggling how to set up the scope so I get a nice stable AM modulated sine wave on the screen. I don't seem to be setting up the triggering properly - tried a lot of combinations. It jumps around no matter what I try.?

Could some kind soul put me out of my misery please? :-)

thank you

Tony

Re: HP8568B does not start.

Lou -
Possibly - I'm more familiar with the 8566. Many times the number of the CPU board was changed because of chip substitution with no external function change.

Here are things to check:
1) Are the first 4 digits of the SN the same
2) Are the motherboard part numbers the same
3) Are the CPU numbers the same
4) Are the FIRMWARE versions the same

If 2,2 and 4 are identical, absolutely OK to change. If 2 and 4 are the same but 3 is different, probably OK - go to Keysight find a part site, put in the part number of the EXISTING CPU and see if the WORKING CPU is a substitute = OK.
If 4 are the same it is also probably OK

Just collect all the data B4 doing the sub.

Cheers!

Bruce

Quoting Lou Blasco <vk3alb@...>:

Hi All,

I was given a HP8568B that doesn't work.

The 85662 display section is good but it seems the CPU in the analyzer box
does not boot. The lithium battery on A15 leaked and was removed at some
stage in the past. The acid got under the clock module and ate the leads
away. The rest of the board looks ok so I pulled the clock chip and
substituted an external 14.7456MHz oscillator for the purpose of testing
but still nothing from the CPU.

All power supplies measure good. Both INSTR CHECK LEDs remain on. None of
the LEDs on A15 come on ever even if I push the INSTRUMENT PRESET key. All
the yellow leds on both units remain illuminated.

I don't have extender cards, just a 'scope and a meter. However I do have
another functional 8568B.

Is it reasonable to take a good A15 card from one machine and put it in
another for troubleshooting purposes? Besides the terrifying risk that I
might end up with two dead analyzers is there anything else I should
consider?

Re: HP 8970B noisy fan

It's in the basement of my house will never go beyond 21¡ãC / 70¡ãF. However I don't really know where the 115V are comming from inside the instument. Is there a transformer or power supply for it? The instrument can be powered with 110V to 240V. Does anyone have the schematic od the instrument?
Hi Marc,

since all these instruments can be switched from 110 to 220 volts, to supply 110 volts to the fan it either has a tap on the secondary or its connected across one of the two halves of the primary.

In any case: a 220 volt fan replacing a 110 volt fan will run at a fraction of noise and power consumption, but the large 120x120x25mm types still deliver a decent airflow. Plentyful sufficient if your unit is running in the basement, except maybe for a power supply operating at the edge of its envelope (but these usually have thermal cutouts).

cheers
Martin

Re: HP 8970B noisy fan

Marc,

I have several 8970Bs and I don't find them to be objectionably noisy unless the fan bearing is out of oil. I would try to take the fan apart, clean the bearing and add new oil.

Yes, there is a way to back up the EEPROM. It's in the manual.

Hi Vladan:

Thanks for the information! I am preparing to conduct a A9 CPU Board Transplant. I would like to read this data, and save it before I proceed forward.?

I am not sure there is another way to do this.?

There is something wrong if you are troubleshooting on that level. I suspect you may do more damage than good. But, if you really want to proceed, the EEPROM is U402, right next to S400. It's not socketed and the part is either an Atmel or Xicor 28HC64.

HP-8753E Which PROM Holds S/N & OPT Info?

All:

I posted earlier in the week on issue pertaining to my inability to enter a license key for my 8753E. While I solved a definite problem in my A9 CPU Board, the PLCC EEPROM does not contain Serial Number or OPT information. After peeling back a few stickers and looking deeper, it appears I have multiple memory devices which would hold this type of data.?

After looking around the CPU Board I have no less than 4 Dallas DS1610's and 2 AMD AM27S191ASC's. I think the Dallas NVRAM probably contains calibration constant for the VNA. I am leaning towards the two AMD27S19's. Can anyone confirm which chip on the A9 Board houses the data I need to gain access too?

Rich??

You're going to have to replace the keypad assembly, this is a very common problem in all the new series of instruments and the E19xx series of meters.
Price isn't too bad and you can find them for much less on Ebay.
