Re: I'm old 70+, the 70K system is old; good or bad omen?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýShould've clarified? that fans are running and verified all cables are in proper place. Have replaced battery in 70900A so up to speed on these issues...
Other than the front panel LEDs on the? 70900A there is no indication that the L.O. is in the game, or so it seems.?Should it show up in the Address? Map?... if yes then it's MIA.

Thanks Paul for the input,
Unfortunately the 70900a doesn't appear under the Address Map and no instruments are realized when SELECT INSTR is initiated; just counts up to 30 and reports NO instrument found...

Hi? Gene ? Welcome to the 70 K equipment ??at $100 you are not going to lose any money Ok you have all the parts to make it work? your first job is to find out if the 70900 is working? as this is the Hart of the system I do not have one of your displays? but with just the display and the 70900 you should be able to interrogate the 70900 for its software date You also need the record any errors ?then you can start sorting things out? ? One warning? the rack has 2 fans in the base? best suggestion is to remove all units? and make Shure both are working as excessive heat can kill the 70900 ? There are about 150 documents on the 70000 site ?the one that is not there and you might find helpful is the sylph paced tutorial this can be got from Artek at $10 ? You will also have to check out all the cables on the rear and be careful hear ? ? Regards Paul ? ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]

After pulling the modules and giving a quick look and smell test, I found nothing that cautioned against applying power. Wow, it fired up, well kind of. On cold start I got this start screen... Reading further in groups, I replaced the 2 lithium? batteries using these leaded ones. Cutting leads where needed makes more sense than soldering. Restarted and got the notice 6003? that occurs with new battery installs...tried the "press DSP then? SELECT INSTR" and got this... "No module present" is displayed after a scan with "Column" advancing through to 30...hmmm? When I look at the address map I do not see the 70900a L.O. module listed...the IF, RF sections and 70205A shown, That's where am at and rather then go forward blindly anew, I thought asking questions to the more knowledgeable would make big time sense. I have/am using manual Part Number 70900-90116 that I just converted to text searchable and have just started diving in.? 1. Should the 70900A show in the A-Map or is some initialization/assignments in order for the 70900A to be recognized? 2. I don't intend on attaching a PC to this frame, is it reasonable to expect any use in this configuration? if not, see next question 3. I stash and harvest parts for my own design work. Does this make more sense without aux PC? BTW I have a fairly large stash of NOS Tek/HP parts that I'm willing to help others with Pre-Thanks for any help |
Re: Placing Shelf on Casters for HP Equipment
Hi:
I have a couple of HP 19" racks that are mounted on a platform that in turn has castors.? The key thing is that the platform sticks out in front of the racks.? That way if slides are used to pull something forward the whole rack does not tip over. -- Have Fun, Brooke Clarke axioms: 1. The extent to which you can fix or improve something will be limited by how well you understand how it works. 2. Everybody, with no exceptions, holds false beliefs. |
Re: 5065A rubidium frequency standard, no 2nd harmonic.
It is almost impossible to adjust the 5 MHz crystal frequency unless the device is locked and you are watching the control voltage. I had the same problem with an HP Cesium standard.

I would suggest you start with GPS based standard and an oscilloscope to get the 5 MHz close enough to lock. As pointed out before, be sure the RF drive frequency and power to the cell are correct. You might also ask the guys from "Time Nuts" group for help. Cheers! Bruce Quoting "Jared Cabot via groups.io" <jaredcabot@...>: Hmm, all the transistors in my A3 assembly test ok, but although I turn the OCXO coarse and fine adjustments, the 5MHz outputs on the front and rear panels don't seem to change.. |
Re: Placing Shelf on Casters for HP Equipment
Matt; for your in-out application, avoid SWIVEL casters as they will require a lot of horizontal force to get them to reverse direction, and when they finally swivel the unit could get tippy.
Also look at using? "Appliance Casters" or maybe adapting machine-tool mobile bases:?? I'm using these low profile appliance casters under several adjacent 19" racks pushed up against a wall:?? They work great on hard floors, and nylon wheels can easily 'skid' sideways to align direction of travel. John |

Re: Placing Shelf on Casters for HP Equipment
I have three on my computer desk. Two mounted underneath, and one standing on end. I'm planning to build a 12V UPS, with multiple outputs to replace almost a dozen wall warts. I may include some 9 volt outputs, and USB power ports. as well. On Fri, Nov 19, 2021 at 10:18 AM Jim Ford <james.ford@...> wrote:

Re: HP8648b corrupted firmware
In this case it didn't solve the issue.
?When the NMV becomes corrupted the firmware reloads the default configuration into it and you're done. But in my case the ROM checksum is wrong indicating an EPROM 'bit rot'. I disassembled the firmware using Ghidra and still working on this |
Re: 5065A rubidium frequency standard, no 2nd harmonic.
Check the crystal frequency - if it has drifted too far, the frequency will not be "scanned" through the cells resonance.
