HP 8640 REPAIR
Don Humphrey
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI am trying to repair a USM-323 Sig Generator. The RF output module is bad.? The number is 08640-67005. If you look on EBAY There are all kinds of numbers xxxx-67007,002. I have not seen any -67005 however. After some research I understand these modules have different operating voltages maybe different functions. Is there any way to find out? ? ? Re: Changing Batteries in HP70000 equipment
Hi Paul, At your suggestion?I have moved this over the 70000 group. Waiting for my first?post to be approved. Please provide either here or there details on where the battery is on the 70004. Pictures on changing the battery in the 70900 is also appreciated. Thanks Dave? On Sat, Apr 18, 2020 at 8:55 AM Paul Bicknell <paul@...> wrote:

Re: HP 3478A Ohms Calibration
To? GROUP? members,
Many are mailing me to reserve Red Devid resistors for them.? Back in Minnesota there are enough Red Devil resistors to go aound.? The issue I am faced with is that I was hoping to get my 3458A DMMs caled to measure the resistors to the best I could before sending them out.? However, due to the virus issues, they will not be caled while I am here with no deffinited date given to me by Keysight. When I get back to Minnesota, there is one 3458A that was caled 5 years ago that I can measure the resistors with if any of you cannot wait.? ?Eventually, I will be upgrading that 3458A? with high stability Ohms AND replacing the cal RAMS,? which can go bad any day now,? with more current date codes. Doing this?will loose the cal constants.? I have performed this upgrade already to my other two 3458A while here in Colorado so all three will be needed to have a NIST traceable cal after the upgrades.? Given the shutdown, I have no idea when this will occur.? I have purchased the cals and just waiting notification when to send the meters into Keysight for the Loveland cal. Once the meters are caled, this is the plan I have for characterizing the Red Devil resistors for you: Measure each resistor to 7 digits with a 8th digit guard band digit using three 3458A DMM with recent NIST certifiable cals.? Average the three readings.? This will be done at three different temperatures to withing +/- 0.1 C so you have an idea of the resistor tempco.? That is the plan. Be patient.? It will be awhile before I can do this.? It is now dependent on when Keysight will schedule to cal my meters.? This was an unforseen problem. George Hnatiuk |
Re: Changing Batteries in HP70000 equipment
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi ? Most modules do not have a battery ?but stand to be corrected ? As I have a? 70900 open on the bench I will do some pictures relating to changing its battery ? Just remembered have just bought another 70004? and not checked its battery? will do that whilst kettle boils for a drink ? ? Regards Paul ? From:

On Behalf Of Dave Miller ? The
purpose of this topic is to organize and summarize the replacement of batteries
in the HP70000 modules? It seems the manuals gloss over this important information.? For instance the 70004A Service manual says if you get 6002 error replace BT1 ?Nowhere else in manual is there a reference to where it is and how you do it ?

Re: HP 3478A Ohms Calibration
Gary and GROUP,
Yes, I can supply you with one.? ?I can help most of you that have mailed me with requests.? I may not answer you quickly as I am very busy these days packing and sorting but I will get back to each of you via EMAIL that have reached out to me. If anyone has parts you are looking for, get to me while I am here is Colorado looking at my inventory here.? I will not be taking everything back to Minnesota with me for space is limited.? I have a 26 foot U-Haul truck and the priority items with be complete test instruments, protos, complete boards, documents and books from my library, loose parts (axial lead / ICs etc) and last will be incidental parts used in instruments.? ?I will get back here within a year to retreive what I leave behind but there is no guarantee when that will happen. I will try my best to help you out. Keep in mind, my main focus is to clear out my home here.? Packing and shipping parts is an added task that takes time away from my main focus but is not impossible to deal with. George |
Re: HP 70205A surprise
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Dave and all? ? There is a 70000 Group ? We could put any service information we have on that site ? Regarding? batteries for the 70900 it seams I will require a few ? Regards Paul From:

Re: Hints on removing burned tantalum residue
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi. Re:- Not having the Aeroflex 3416 MESFET data sheets? nor the signal
generator schematics is difficult. I think those devices may need -ve Gate bias to run correctly, so
you might want to check that, and if missing, find out where it
should have come from.
It seems that MESFET and GASFET devices are similar, and I do
know that power GASFET's most certainly need a -ve bias to run
correctly, plus that is often implemented these days, within an
automatic bias and protection scheme, so that if the -ve bias
source fails, the +ve power source for the Drain is disconnected,
preventing device damage or distruction of the 'FET's. Hope something helps. Dave B G0WBX -- Created on and sent from a Unix like PC running and using free and open source software: |

Re: HP 70205A surprise
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi all ? Warning the 70900 a low / changing the battery ?will loose its program and a lot are not available ? ? I will be soldering another battery in parallel on flying leads before removing the original ? Before the present issues I was on the hunt for the original make as used by HP as they are considered the best ? Also there are at lest 2 types used? ones with axial leads? at each ends? The other without leads for the 70004 display ? Regards Paul From:

Re: HP 652A Dial Calibration
DON'T bend the tabs, no matter how desperate you get. I once had an HRO receiver where a previous owner had bent the tabs to get perfect tracking at the 50 kHz calibration marker frequencies. Unfortunately, the tabs now looked like the edge of a saw, and the freq was more than 10 kHz off between some of the 50 kHz steps.

Bending the plates in the 652A would be worse, as the three sections of the tuning cap C1 should track each other. I would suspect an imbalance would cause the amplitude to vary with frequency more than allowable. John On 4/17/2020 9:51 AM, n4buq wrote:
After having the lubrication sieze the dial mechanism so tightly I could hardly move the dial on my 652A, I disassembled, cleaned, relubricated, and reassembled the entire mechanism. Naturally, I lost what synchronization the dial had with the tuning capacitor so I performed the dial calibration steps in the manual. |

Re: HP 70205A surprise
Off the top of my head, the following modules have batteries: 70004A Display 70100A Power Meter 70205A Display 70700A Digitizer (WARNING - disconnecting the battery causes program loss) 70900A/B LO I think the optical spectrum analyzer modules have batteries too, but I've never looked inside one of those. Lots of manuals are online here:? Thanks, David Slik VE7FIM On Fri, Apr 17, 2020 at 9:21 PM Dave Miller <ve7hr@...> wrote: Now that is ugly :-( |

A question. I am guessing that is the battery that is in the 70000 modules. Does some one have a quick reference to where they are located and which modules have them? I am thinking I should change out mine. I have a good collection of modules. Thanks Dave VE7HR On Apr 17, 2020, at 9:17 PM, Dave McGuire <mcguire@...> wrote: |
