Download the 8657A Service Manual from?, and use Service Sheet 16 to troubleshoot the problem.

Re: HP 8595E SYTF 5086-7803 PIN switch problem

...Another solution that I am considering is to buy a microwave SPDT switch (even SPST can do)
and put it between the attenuator and the input of YTF. For the high band the switch will pass the signal to the SYTF and
it does its job perfectly but for the low band the switch will divert the signal (pass through) directly to the dual mixer.
The biggest issues are generating compatible switching and power supply voltages from what is already on the A7 board
for that I will have to put is some transistors and stuff somewhere! and the next issue is where to mount the switch in the RF compartment.
There are some small spaces here and there and maybe I can squeeze it somewhere...

However, the type of the switch is critical. First I was looking at relay switches for example from Teledyne which have
extremely good specs and relatively cheap but then it struck me that the switching times must be very small compared to the sweep speeds of the SA
Relay switches are rated at 5ms-15ms switching times. The might work OK for most of the time but if it happens that your frequency span
covers the transition between low band and high band and the sweep time is in the range of 10's of ms then it becomes a mess...that's exactly why?
the HP designers only used PIN switches in all places in the RF section. Modern analyzers use GaAs FET switches. The switching times for PIN diode switches is?
around 5-20nsec but of ocurse the can never achieve the insertion loss and isolation specs of relay switches. not even close..

Now the only thing I have been able to find was Minicircuits ZYSW-2-50DR and ZYSWA-2-50DR with reasonable specs up to 3GHz and even applicable up to 5GHz but not to 6.5GHz as I need.

Any suggestion about a PIN diode RF switch that I can buy at reasonable price is welcome?

HP 8595E SYTF 5086-7803 PIN switch problem

I've got a 8595E which works perfectly fine in the high band but it's about 24-26dB down (almost flat) in the low band (9K-2.9G)
Long story short, by doing various measurement, I have confirmed that the PIN diode switch inside the SYTF when
switches to the low band is dead (exactly 24-26dB loss over the band) so it does not pass the signal through to the mixer
everything after the SYTF works fine when I directly inject low band signal. The YIG filter itself is of course fine, too.
It seems to me that the PIN diode in the shunt arm of the switch is shorted perhaps due to excessive input power. It also overloads the switch voltage
that comes from A7 board, instead of -9.8V it becomes -3.6V when that switch is supposed to close. But for eh other pole of the switch (high band) it is -9.8V as it should

Anyways, since I have never opened a SYTF or any YIG tuned stuff before
I have a couple of questions I was hoping someone on this forum can help me with:

1-what are my chances of repairing the switch and not messing up the YTF?

2-Are the switch and the YTF in two separate compartments? If I attempt to open it up
is there anything that might fall off and mess the whole thing up?

3-is the switch made of wire bonded microcircuit elements? I don't have access to any wire bonding stuff. Only my soldering iron!

thanks

Thanks for the link! This looks like it should be fairly doable with some care.

For NiCad leakage (sodium or potassium Hydroxide do not remember which) you have an alkali causing the damage.
You need to neutralize the alkali.
This requires an acid.
A very good weak acid to use is white vinegar.
After you neutralize the alkali, then clean the board with distilled water.

You may need to use dental picks to spot remove or clean the copper hydroxide left from the leaking alkali.

In some cases you may need to repair the traces.
You can use wire or replace the traces.
Pace printed a very good repair manual based on the IPC for board repair and has available the different traces required to repair almost any board damage.

A good repair person can repair a board where you will have to look very close to see that it was repaired.

Using this search term "ipc printed circuit repair" you are provided with a number of places that have repair documents.? The one from intertronics is a ver good reference.

Hi,
I tried with simple green degreaser diluted with distilled water but after 12h I still notice the residues from the old battery. The old battery is a NiCd ... so is a normal degreaser enough to remove that green residues in your opinion?

Now I am going to try a second wash with the same degreaser but with a warm water and brushing. Below I highlight with red arrows some points:

Unknown Options 85680B

Hi,
I have the above mentioned SA with serial number 2445Axxxx. I had to part it with the display section becaused I want to trouble shoot a non functional HP-IB.
Looking to the backside the serial plate mentioned options 856 808. I have not found a clue in the manuals.
Any info is appreciated.

Regards
Ernst

So what do the pictures of three boards mean?
These appear to be the same circuit board from three different instruments.

A little reference goes a long way.

Regarding ?HP 3314 exhalant bit of kit? ?it is also a VCO?

?

If you are repairing hp equipment of that generation you must get a HP signature analyzer

Infect most of use have at lest 2 as I typically pay ?10 at radio rallies

very nice instrument with clean and precise waveforms

If I remember correctly there are 2 custom designed chips on the analog board and the rest?
one was the sine shaper I recall...they hardly fail really. the rest of the components are?
all through hole and can be found from various sources. even the custom chips show up on ebay.
in the two cases that I have repaired which were really old (~1982) the masked ROMs had failed plus the SRAMs
the masked ROMs (there were 6 of them containing the firmware) are those that are used in old Commodores (MK36000?)
so I had to make an adapter and fit in 28 pin EPROMs which is easy and the ROM images are available on internet.
The RAM chips I had to buy from china...

for troubleshooting the digital board having a signature analyzer (like Tektronix 308) is very very useful or even necessary.

the service manual is excellent

I could use the 3314A's VCO and PLL capabilities. Besides that, it would come in handy as replacement for my old analog function generator.
So I wonder whether some people on the list have experience with the 3314A. Are there some common problems, are they easy to repair, or is it just a pile of unobtanium ASICs, etc.
If there are good chances for repair, I would even buy a possibly nonworking unit and repair it...

Re: hp 8657A

really I make confusion , but helped from HP mistak:
. On PIC 8657-1 can see the write under the connector. Seeing the letter , seem that the first letter can be a M.
On secon PIC 8657-2? without connector the letter are HHZ.....(???)
Comparing with PIC 8646-3 ( another generator but 8656) is clear that are KHZ. !!!!!
At end the situation is :
on OUT 100 KHz , there is nothing
on OUT 5 MHz? ? there is nothing? .....? ?but are 5 volt that came out? from module? ?
on other machine 8556 are 2 volt and also 5 MHz....
