Re: Off Topic: 3D scanning and printing
3D scanning has lagged far behind 3D printing. How complex is the shape of the part? Do you think it might be more feasible to CAD model it and 3D print that? Just a thought.

I could do that :)
Dunno if MS would get their knickers-in-a-knot over XP being distributed
like that though.

Re: E4406A firmware update Win7/10 problem
Good point, Didier might not want to take that chance.
In principle it should be fine since the VM will still be subject to product activation before it could actually be used as a general-purpose XP image, but MS likely won't see it that way.

Correct.? Do you have a reader to make a copy of the firmware and hopefully the PCB isn't many layers so a photo can help with reverse engineering? :-|)
Does seem more feasible after observing the pricing.?
I did find there are a few more adapters that have been made over the years... all if found at crazy pricing:

I bought a SCSI2SD v5.0b in November 2017 and installed it in my
16702B and got it running without too much
trouble.?? There were some small mechanical issues but nothing too
much.?? I got a bunch of GNU software
downloaded and running as well.?? I did not alter the SCSI wiring,
just replaced the hard disk with the SCSI2SD.
I left the CD drive as originally configured.??? It seems like a
good product.

I had trouble with the SCSI2SD v6 in both a 16702A and a 16702B.?
Inertial Computing couldn't really figure it out either.? I
finally tracked it down to the SCSI2SD couldn't be on the same
SCSI chain with the CD ROM drive in either model analyzer.? But
the analyzer's original hard drive could be on the same SCSI chain
with the SCSI2SD card.? Weird.? So in the end, I had to do a two
step process of 1) reigniting a working SCSI hard drive with the
latest OS from the CD ROM drive, then 2) disconnect the CD ROM
drive and do a DD (unix disk copy command) of the hard drive to
the SCSI2SD.? From then on, the SCSI2SD worked without the hard
drive installed (though, as indicated, the speed improvement isn't
really there, probably due to other bottlenecks in the disk
subsystem).? All this would require one to have a working hard
drive in the analyzer to begin with, of course.? Which, without a
speed improvement, doesn't offer a lot of value to using the
SCSI2SD in this application (though I kept it and use it in the
16702B, keeping the original working hard drive as a backup since
I wouldn't be able to reignite directly to the SCSI2SD if it
failed).
The owner of Inertial Computing was very helpful in diagnosing all
of this.? Great guy to work with.? But ultimately, the technology
just didn't quite work as expected in THIS particular
application...at least for me and across two analyzers.

Re: 16702A/B fan upgrade (was Recently accuired a Hp 16700a)
The Acard ARS-2000SUP was $200 when I bought it about a year ago, and that was already more than what I wanted to sink into an old logic analyzer.? But I had to know if it was going to get me the big speed improvement.? I bought it new on ebay, and after looking just now it seems to have vanished for any reasonable price.? $1000+ is crazy pricing.
You could send mail to Inertial Computing and ask about the 16601A with the SCSI2SD v6.? The 16601A appears in the compatibility list for the v5 here:
Inertial Computing did give me a full refund after we failed to get the v6 working.
?
In my search for solid state SCSI devices, I also came across this:
?
No prices and I have no experience with them.? Judging by the fancy look of their web site and their customer brag list, it's probably expensive.
Of course there's always the possibility of finding an actual SSD SCSI drive, but compatibility with the16601A will likely be hit-or-miss, and like everything SCSI now-a-days, sure to be over-priced.

Good info that pointed me in a direction I was wanting to go with the 16601A.? I was thinking about using the Noctua fan on my TDS-520 mod test bed. Specs don't match however.
Are there any other PATA/SATA to SCSI converters other than the Acard ARS-2000SUP on the market??
$1,000 was more than I expected to find and seems like an interesting project in itself.? I'd like a copy of that systems firmware and schematic.
Had anyone tried on the SCSI2SD v5 or SCSI2SD v6 on a 16601A or 16600 series?

Re: 16702A/B fan upgrade (was Recently accuired a Hp 16700a)
I have a 16702B logic analyzer, and I was unable to get the SCSI2SD v6 to work on it after over a month of back and forth with Inertial Computing.? They thought it was a signaling level problem and even sent me a modified board to try, but to no avail.? That was about a year and a half ago, and I still don't see the 16702B on their compatibility list.? The 16702A *is* on the list, but I can't vouch for it.
I also tried the SCSI2SD v5, and that worked fine, but it was actually about 15% slower than the original hard drive (measuring a boot time of about 3:20).
I eventually ended up with an Acard ARS-2000SUP, which is a 20MB/s SATA to SCSI converter, and installed an SSD in it.? That was only faster by about 10-20%.
I was hoping for a big improvement in getting rid of the mechanical disk, but clearly these systems are constrained by more than just disk I/O.

Re: Power Supply PCB Microfuses for H/P 8656A
Those plug-in fuses are convenient but expensive. Just replacing missing ones can take a lot of money at over $5 a pop, and if they start blowing and you have to troubleshoot, it can get quite painful. If you are willing to solder in a leaded fuse that looks like a small resistor you can save a lot of money, which is what I did years ago? on an HP 8640B signal generator. You do lose the convenience of a plug-in but it costs a lot less. (I wrote about this in my "Idea Exchange" column in the QRP Quarterly, a small ham radio publication, in 2011.)
I have some things to take care of today but I'll pass along some DigiKey numbers later. (The leaded fuses from Littelfuse cost under a dollar each.)

Re: E4406A firmware update Win7/10 problem
Neil, probably the ¡°ancient¡± XP virtual machine would be ideal. If you could also do a full Wireshark capture while doing the update, it might be possible to reverse-engineer the protocol and write a modern replacement. I doubt that they did anything very fancy. It might be a good old TFTP transfer for all I know.
Cheers, Kuba

When I try to use the Agilent firmware updater (from the website) for my E4406A, I get warnings about the ancient MS JVM it tries to run. If I mess with the path, I can get it to run, but although the updater runs and netstat shows has a listening port on 0.0.0.0 UDP for BOOTP, it doesn't respond to the BOOTP request from the 4406 during the upgrade. If I run a different bootp agent in place of the updater, it issues a good IP to the 4406. This is the same on a Win7 and two Win10 platforms. (Firewalls and AV disabled in all cases)
All three can read the current cal and config files before I reboot into the bios. After a SEA (02), I see option 0 is the LAN card, so I pick that (03), and then select no interactive (down arrow), and the 4406 asks the LAN for the IP but never gets it.
On the LAN, I have a router, but very oddly, if I remove it and just run a bare Cisco switch with the 4406 and a PC, the 4406 doesn't detect the LAN interface at all. No sign of any obvious broadcast traffic or discovery packets, but I've not (yet) done a port monitor and captured all the L2 traffic on Wireshark. Pings, ftp and telnet all work fine with the 4406 running normally.
If I try to run the updater using the latest javaw.exe (update 181) or java.exe, it throws the usual errors about not being able to find the main class in the .jar
Is there a workaround I can use? Maybe unzip the .jar and put the classes into a folder and tell java to search there? Maybe run an ancient XP VM, or run the thing in Linux? Or can I use PXEboot or tftp with separate bootp, or some other way to get this thing updated? Any hints would be very much appreciated (other than time travel).
Current firmware is from 2000, the one I am trying to use is from 2007. Oh, and of course, the 4406 backlights are totally dead, so I have to use a LED torch to try to read the display.
